LAPD Shoots Unarmed Man on Live TV

Featured Replies

Last night in Los Angeles, a suspect was running from the police in a corvette. After crashing into another vehicle at an intersection, the suspect tried to continue driving, but was stuck by a traffic light and a parked car. Upon exiting the vehicle, while he didn't have his hands up, he made no move to or indication that he had a weapon. The police opened fire with lethal rounds. Justified? You be the judge.

In my opinion, he posed a significantly less threat upon leaving the vehicle (in essence, dropping his weapon) and this was the prime time for a beanbag shotgun or a taser.

  • I wonder if the LAPD have been training their cops based on the LSPD in GTA V?

  • First and foremost, I must say, in that video I saw excellent police work. As stated above the POS used his vehicle as a Deadly Weapon, against an innocent civilian. The POS after crashing his vehicle

I don't really think people should comment on things until they have seen it. He left the car, leaving him unarmed. Being he was just in a violent car crash, then it should be reasonable that he isn't thinking coherently, and he was more than within range for a beanbag shotgun or a taser.

And it being acceptable to kill people because prisons are full is a truly sickening statement. If they truly cared about having prisons that aren't full, they should quit prosecuting people for victimless crimes.

I personally don't think that shot should have been taken. He was not facing the offices and was vulnerable. In my eyes, the shot was not justified in any way what so ever.

I agree. Officers should only use lethal force to defend themselves and other people, and only as when all other means of defence fail. The man wasn't a threat for anybody after he exited his vehicle.

BTW. Any info about whether he was killed or just injured?

Police are allowed to use deadly force when someone poses a significant threat to the officers or others. This man, after a pursuit at relatively high speeds through LA, T-boned another vehicle and ruined his own. The reckless manner of driving means that police are legally allowed to kill the man. However, 99% of police work is done in the gray area. I do believe that the shooting was clean. As he got out of the car, had he stayed there, he would not have been shot, Had he remained in the car, he would not have been shot. Had he not broken the law in the first place, he would not have been shot. However, as he jumped out of his crashed car, he charged towards officers. In the 3 seconds that this happened, the police have to make a decision that will forever impact the rest of their lives. When are the police going to load LTL rounds? WHy would they let the man get close enough to them for a taser to be deployed? An object in motion stays in motion, that taser wouldn't have stopped the charging in time. Pepper spray? There just isn't enough time for these officers to be able to get their less-than-lethal rounds out. Was shooting him the right choice? Maybe not, but what other options did they have as he jumped out of the car and ran towards the officers?

I think some piggies are in trouble. He caused a threat to other people while in the pursuit, but this was after the fact and he was no longer causing a threat to anyone.

If that was a charge, it was the slowest one I've ever seen, and done at a walking pace. Generally for pursuits, police put someone with a less than lethal option by the front. A taser has an effective range of 25 feet. The suspect was within that range, and even if he wasn't, that is why there are cops with guns. Not to shoot the suspect that is non threatening, but if there is no other option.

And if you look closely, the police start opening fire before he fully opens the door. The guns are there for when someone threatens others with a lethal weapon and makes no indication of giving up. Getting out of the car (as an analogy with a gun, dropping the weapon) and walking doesn't justify lethal force.

From what I've seen, most pursuits finish when the suspect bails and flees, eventually being caught by the police. After repeatedly trying to get his car to go, he decided to leave. Police are trained throughout their careers in situations exactly like these, and I trust their judgement. We don't know who they were chasing, we don't know what he did, and we don't know what could have happened. It is too hard to judge based on just the video. I trust their judgement.

Yeah the police in this state has the authority to use lethal force but surely this lethal force should only be used if their life or the life of others is at risk. In this case, no risk to life was presented (disregarding the pursuit) and the police had no right to execute this lethal force. It was totally uncalled for.

Let's wait for a full news report and/or dash cam footage of the chase w/ radio chatter instead of speculating on why the cops did what they did, shall we? That beind said, I don't like the LAPD. A lot of big agencies have problems with "quality control" among the people they hire.

Also, the car he drives can be considered a lethal weapon, authorizing the use of deadly force.
