Active Shooter and Vehicle mowing down pedestrians in Manhattan today

Featured Replies

About an hour ago someone mowed down several bicyclists on the bike lane of the west side highway near Stuyvesant high school/Pier 40, while firing shots outside of his truck and shooting more people. 8 people have been injured, and 2 people confirmed DOA. The West Side Highway and FDR have both been closed down with heavy traffic across the borough and hundreds of emergency personnel responding to the incident including NYPD ESU, CTB, K9, and Bomb Squad among other units.

Suspect in Custody.

Specifically on West and Chambers near BPC just hours before the Halloween parade is supposed to start a few blocks east in the West Village.

so this was a fear attack?

The FBI and NYPD, and Cuomo himself have all said it is now officially a terror incident. The previous reports it was confirmed as non terrorism were false.

The killer is an Uzbekistan national, arrived in the USA in 2010. Originally from the same town where the terrorist who did subway train bombing this April in Saint Petersburg, Russia was born. Must be a really nice place.

Well you know hard life. Young impressionable minds and an easy target to point to and blame for all your problems. The 3 key ingredients to a terrorist/freedom fighter(Subjective)

I say put him to death. Give him what he wants and what America wants. We have no place for this stupidity on our planet.

I dont disagree. Then again you and I both know that isnt how we work. Hell we as a people more then likely never directly effected this guy other then what he has seen in hollywood movies.

It would amaze you the amount of these "Terrorists" had no direct bad connections to the western world. Its something like a 60-40 split. Poorly educated, young angry people are too easy to indoctrinate. Look at our local gang issues for prime examples.

What makes the difference between us and those psychos are moral values like equality, justice and freedom. If you execute him without any form of trial, you end being no better than him and the others. Acting based on emotions rather rational reasoning is the worst thing anyone can do in this kind of situation.

The US has the death penalty. “Put him to death”doesn’t imply “kill him without trial;” it can easily mean “try him on capital charges and seek the death penalty.” Please don’t take the least charitable interpretation of people’s posts.

The only counter argument to that I have is that were he to get the death penalty it would still be years before he was actually put to death. Feds might need to look into a clause like Texas if there is enough proof and witnesses you do not get to have 20 appeals and wait 10 years. You go to the front of the line. At which point your charge every Terrorist/active shooter under federal law.

I doubt that would happen though.

Death penalty is banned in NY. I took it just how it was said, as in they should just die no matter the trial (since the administration can override the death penalty ban of a state in some circumstances). If people don't want their words to be interpreted a different way than they meant it, they should be more accurate in what they're trying to say.

In the United States, "put him to death" is the implication of a trial followed by the death penalty when found guilty, because he is clearly guilty. This is why cp702 gave the explanation that he/she did. I understand that the death penalty has been abolished in France for quite some time, so your interpretation of what I said may have been different than what was actually intended. There's nothing wrong with that. Just two different societies, therefore, two different interpretations.

In my own personal opinion, I believe that he should have no trial and be put to death. But that's not how our system operates, therefore, he deserves a trial and then the death penalty.

The death penalty doesn't exist for crimes against the state of New York. That's irrelevant for a federal prosecution, which is for crimes against the United States. Terrorism is normally handled at the federal level. I'll grant that the actual capital crime he's being charged with so far is a bit odd (providing material support to terrorist groups isn't capital, so he's also being charged with causing death by damaging/destroying a motor vehicle used in interstate commerce with reckless disregard for human life), but since the terrorism charge makes it a federal case already I don't see much wrong with charging him with all relevant federal crimes he committed. There's not some specific decision needed to "override the death penalty ban of a state," which isn't something the feds can actually do. There's a decision to charge someone with crimes against the United States and seek a penalty authorized by the laws of the United States. NY law isn't being overridden, it simply doesn't apply in the first place.
