Forced Windows 10 Upgrade Starts During Gaming Live Stream with 120K Viewers

Featured Replies

Microsoft swears that users will always be asked before their computer is upgraded to Windows 10, but there are more and more examples that this isn’t always happening. And the latest blunder happened with no less than 120,000 witnesses.

If you’re a gaming enthusiast, you probably heard of Erik Flom, a former professional Counter Strike Global Offensive player who is now a full-time streamer, according to his online profile.

During his most recent live stream, Flom was stunned to see the computer he was playing on automatically starting the Windows 10 upgrade without any prior warning, prompt, message, or anything. One second you buy a hand grenade and then boom, the Windows 10 upgrade starts, rebooting your computer and asking you to sit back and relax because the whole process is performed automatically.

This must have been disappointing for most of the 120,000 viewers who were hoping to have a fun time watching Erik Flom play Counter Strike at a pro level, but the stream got interrupted by a Windows 10 forced update.

I bet, some of his fans had to miss work, school, and other important things to take time out of their day, so they can watch Erik Flom play CS live.

I would be disappointed if a Windows forced update, internet connection problems, and problems caused me to miss the live stream of a game, concert, or video stream with a celebrity or regular person which I am a fan of.

If you know what you're doing, no, the update can't happen without your consent. This guy most likely didn't pay attention to Microsoft policies, or even to the THOUSAND of news articles about W10 upgrades and forgot to untick the automatic upgrade/update. Not the OS' fault if he's dumb.

Besides, I call HUGE bullshit on that. When the computer shuts down to upgrade to W10, it shuts down every other single program. Everything. So his livestream should have been shut down as well even before the restarting screen was shown. His game would have been forcefully closed, then all his programs, then his computer.

Actually, it is possible to stream from a different PC than the one you're playing on (not sure how though) so I'm guessing that's what he was doing too. The PC he was playing on restarted, the one running the stream did not.

but what if he was using another computer to stream his camera? and perhaps he might have been using an external recording/streaming device to make it less stressful on his gaming computer?

This is most likely,  if he is a serious or big time streamer.   A second PC or laptop with a capture card to stream if you want to have higher production quality and engagement.

Much easier to manage your audience when you have a separate system for chat and switching overlays, scenes, intro, break, outro screen.(sure you can have hotkeys,  but a 2nd system is going to make your life easier and not to mention removing the stress of your gaming rig having to output, encode and whatever else...)

Erik Flom is a professional gamer where, so most of the people who are watching are most likely his fans, family and friends, and there are fewer regular people who are not fans who watch other regular gamers like other Twitch streamers where many of their viewers are not as dedicated to their streams.

I can understand the frustrations of having technical problems like a forced Windows Update stopping viewers from having a good time watching Erik Flom play Counter Strike. It most likely feels like someone turning off the TV signal to your house while you are watching a live event like sports shows where you can't view it live again, or interact in live conversation on Facebook or Twitter with the sports announcers and hosts

Those people need to get their priorities straight then.

As Hystery said, Windows doesn't just start the upgrade without you consenting to it at some point. So many people just click things to get them to go away and don't pay attention to what they are agreeing to (such as spamming next in an installation, then getting all the adware that you willingly agreed to get).

So many issues could be avoided by people simply reading things before clicking them away. Windows update days always caused fun stuff on my old high school, as quite a few teachers would either ignore/not notice the "restarting in 15 minutes" message, continuously hit "remind me in x amount of time" (and generally not picking the longest amount of time so it popped up again after 30 minutes or so) or accidentally click "restart now".

At least my mum now reads stuff when installing things, which has led to me not needing to unfuck things quite as often as it used to be.

I'm not sure watching a "pro" CS:GO player qualifies to be more important than school or work. If you're taking off work, missing school or anything else remotely important just to watch someone play a video game, then you're doing life wrong.

Hard to find sympathy for anyone who is a "professional" streamer/gamer. So, Microsoft... how many of these people can you interrupt? :teehee:

There goes bayareabuggs cut screen episode 246 :P
