world peace

Featured Replies

In my opinion, world peace is only possible if there was a threat to the entire human race so great, that it would force all the governments of the world to cooperate. It could be an alien invasion; global, extremely lethal pandemic; global natural disaster etc.

Also, should humanity start to colonize space, I suppose that the need of a global government would become apparent, in order to allow for more efficient space conquest, and possibly to mount an organised defense, should a threat arise.

I agree but then this could cause something similar to the Star Wars Saga philosophy. Two massive groups fight over control of space, and two different ideologies on how to control it. Hence the whole, "Galactic Empire and Republic" thing.

Then there would also probably be those who want to keep humanity from expanding into space, and try everything possible to limit space exploration.

Then there would be extremists who believe that only a certain race or group should be able to explore space, and they'd probably try to abandon the other races on Earth.

Even if some sort of massive alien invasion occurred, there would probably be fighting on how to deal with the invasion. Some would see the invasion as an act of greatness, some would see it as an act of hostility, some would probably worship the invasion.

Comparing this to Star Wars space exploration is on a massive scale, but there is still war on a massive scale between everyone. Based on human activity throughout the course of history, I don't suspect this would be any different.

On a similar scenario, the rise of ISIS and the global threat they are showing should have provoked this scenario (and I truly hoped it would, I really hoped governments and people would put aside their beliefs and grudges to fight together against a common threat), and look where it ended. Everyone just does like they did before, they just care about themselves.

Starting from there, I'm pretty sure that if there was an alien invasion, or lethal pandemic, sure governments would try to coordinate their actions, but as soon as it would be over, they'd return to their usual behavior, holding grudges and fighting over beliefs.

Because world peace is sci-fi. It could happen, but not right now, in current circumstances.

Also, I do agree that without something to rally against, humanity would not be able to fully unite. Right now people divide themselves into families, communities, nations. While this is a sci-fi scenario, if we were to encounter an alien race, people would probably stop seeing themselves as, for example, Americans, Chinese, Russians first and then humans, but the other way around - the identity of simply being a human would become more important than being an identity of an Englishman (once again, an example).

I think space exploration would be a good start. If countries start taking planets for themselves as territory, then shit will start hitting the fan, but as long as the budget requirements are as they are, you really do need multiple countries to band together in order to get anywhere in the near future.

I don't think it would be possible. It would require such a perfect combination of mindsets and behaviors that it could never be achieved.
