Common LAPD Police Vehicles

Hello!

I was just curious about what the most common police vehicle was in Los Angeles. I have seen videos of many Crown Vics but not sure if they are common.

Hi.

Yeah, the CVPI is one of two sedans used by the LAPD, the other being the 2008 Dodge Charger LX Police Special since the Crown Vic has been discontinued (rip)

As of 2015, the most common vehicles are the following:

2003 - 2011 Ford Crown Victoria P71 both marked and slicktop versions.

2012 - 20'' Ford Police Interceptor:

Other then these they have a few 2001-2006 Chevy Tahoes (supervisors use these afaik), 2005-2015 Toyota Tacomas, 2006-2009 Dodge Chargers and 2006-2012 Chevrolet Impalas and a few others that's not worth mentioning.

Detectives and SWAT use unmarked CVPIs, SWAT also uses 2001-2006 and 2007-2012 Chevrolet Suburbans and Lenco Bearcats.

Basically, around 90% (If not more) are crown vics, a majority with federal signal arjents, some unmarked street package CVPIs and some slick tops. A few older CVPIs with mx7000s are still around, and I've seen video of 1997 Crown Vics in use as late as 2013.

A few 2006-2010 chargers are in use, primarily marked and there are some impalas from the same era as well.

Since the cvpi was discontinued, they are slowly being replaced by 2011+ chargers and both Ford Police Interceptor models.

Other vehicles are used, but are much rarer and already touched on by Sgt. Kanyo

Sticks and stones may break bones, but 5.56 fragments on impact.

California PD's, and generally anywhere in the South, keep their vehicles much longer than we do in the East Coast. They're not exposed to road salt or as many harsh cold conditions, which generally shorten vehicle life and reliability. This is why almost 90% or more of the LAPD's vehicles are still Ford Crown Victoria's. I also imagine that they don't mind sinking new engines or transmissions in a lot of them, since they love the cars. They actually have a machine that can bend frames back into place and pretty much straighten them for any that have been in accidents. They can't do that with non-body on frame vehicles. Eventually they'll have to replace them all for liability reasons, but I imagine you'll still see some running 10 years from now.

Around here most town agencies have already replaced their CVPI's with Ford Explorers. It's pretty rare to see them now. Only the CT State Police still maintain a dominant CVPI fleet, but even now they're starting to phase in some Tauruses.

Might just be your part of CT; in New Haven, CVPIs are still extremely common.

My town has about 8 2011's left, all 2010's have been retired and been replaced with Explorers. So I'd say it's equally split 8 to 8. Surrounding areas have some left but I see Explorers almost everywhere I go. Yeah New Haven still has a lot, as well as Hartford. Hartford is broke so I imagine they'll be sticking with the Crown Vic's for some time. I also see several unmarked Tahoe's in Hartford.

I can vouch for this, though I don't live in LA. Before I moved to Baltimore, which a lot of the vehicles here appear to be Impalas, I lived in the state of Virginia. The cars were either Ford Taurus or Ford Explorer. Occasionally there'd be an undercover Ford Fusion.
