How to Spot an American Anywhere in the World

Featured Replies

For better or for worse, we Americans have some very unique habits. Baseball caps and fanny packs aren’t the only giveaways. So Yahoo Travel found out what foreigners think are our top tells. Here are 13 ways to spot an American anywhere in the world.

We Americans are the ones staring at all the toplessness, looking slightly uncomfortable, yet fascinated.

Cool! So now, when I'm caught staring at some nice girl's titties, I can declare that I'm American and that's how we all do. You know, that old tradition...

Thanks CK, I'am now ashamed to be an american.

Same analogy as if I went to the U.S I could tell people we live in Igloos & people would believe us, or that we put our tow trucks in storage for the winter & use sled dogs with beacons on their heads.

Lot's of Americans think Canadians just say "Eh" and play Hockey. :P

The part I find funny is it's a bit easier to tell a Southerner from another American abroad - Rednecks will whoop and holler when a lady starts to undo her bra; most other Americans will simply turn away out of decency.

wtf.

The give away for me is, well, the accent. I could sit and listen to an American talk for hours for some reason.

( I think I'm an American deep down inside )

Kind of funny, but at the same time I take mild offense to the arrogance of this article. I've been to 3 other countries, which would include at least 2 other cultures, and I've seen many people wearing baseball caps, and white athletic socks. Hell, I've seen that stuff in Dubai.

The teeth thing I get, Americans are the most vain people on the planet. Same with the breast things. American culture shames sex and anything related to it; why, I don't know.

5,6, and 7 are kind of off in my opinion but I guess I could see that, although myself and the plethora of people I've traveled with don't fit with any of those things.

And the thing about tap water I believe is dead wrong.

Part of me feels like this article was meant to be factual, but ended up getting  the stereotype of a rich, arrogant american who travels abroad.

I'm trying not to sound like an arrogant american, but I've personally never seen some of this stuff that they're talking about, and don't really see many Americans doing this.

Most of the American tourists I see are usually "prepared" for travels. Not the "ignorant american who still thinks that he's in america", even though they do exist. This article is making it sound like all americans are like this, which is what I'm taking mild offense to.

Although I get this article as a joke in a way, and did find it amusing, so sorry if I came of "prick-ish".

haha this was a great read and i definitely fit most of those descriptions..except the north face jacket.
