Any of you guys majoring in law enforcement?

Featured Replies

So I lived in Naperville, IL my entire life, 28 miles west of Chicago. Been highly interested in law enforcement for a year now, I'm in my second year in College Of dupage :D

Just wandering if any of you guys near my area want to be cops too :D

I'm on the other end of the States, but majoring in Criminal Justice nonetheless.

I'm currently pursuing an associates in justice studies, but I won't go to a bachelors in it. I don't recommend it if you're going into law enforcement. It's pointless, you learn everything you need to in the academy. And if you ever get injured on the job, the degree would be useless (unless it was a general justice studies). I recommend a degree that would help you as an officer such as public relations, psychology, or any type of communication.

I only did it so I could get brownie points during an oral board, but it really doesn't matter. I enjoy the subject though!

Well, I live on the other side of the ocean, but I study Criminal Justice and Criminology and already work as an Assistant Investigator in the Investigative Committee. Large scale fraud, corruption, white-collar crime, all that.

As far as I see it, U.S. police officers are taught all that they need in the academy. One can't be appointed a detective out of the blue, even if this person holds a degree in CJ...

Well, to stay safe, I'll need a bachelors degree. Dupage County Sheriff's Office requires associates but here in Naperville you need a bachelors to get hired as a sworn officer. Their pay is unbelievable though

Having a degree to PDs is more than just knowledge. Remember that. It proves you have discipline, determination, responsibility, etc when you even have at least a 2 year degree. But specifically, if a cop doesn't know The Bill of Rights, then he'll probably end up screwing up quite often, even though they teach it at the academy.

In Florida you have to get your certification to be a Law Enforcement officer in the state which requires you to attend a 6-8 month academy and pass the certification exam, and now days agencies wont sponsor you because they have so many applicants. Now i have my associates degree in criminal justice and I already knew most of what i learned in the academy besides case law and the statues of course. But most agencies here only require you to already have your certification and just have a high school diploma, others require at least your associates degree or a 4 year degree. For instance the City of Orlando states you must have a high school diploma but a 4 year degree is preferred, so when you apply with the 100s of others they are going to look at the people with 4 year degrees first so you have a better chance of getting hired.

As someone else mentioned i wouldn't get a bachelors in criminal justice because it just useless in my opinion and you really only need an associates, but if an agency requires a 4 year degree then get one in Public administration or find our if they require a certain degree.

Good luck!
