The Mind-Boggling Classic Cop Car Thread

Featured Replies

Anyone know that Soviet-era film where they had American cars? There was these police cars with vinyl roofs, unusual lighting setups and the 'dial 911' being mistaken for unit numbers, if I remember it correctly. Can't find it anywhere.

EDIT: A-HA! The film is Mirazh! Now that won't bother me for the whole day.

Here's the car(s) in question:

Ford Consul, 1972 (inserting image won't work)

Again, Ford Consul (or Granada, according to IMCDB)

Well, I found something very interesting. In 2003 the german government sent 40 new VW T4 police cars to Afganistan.

Note: the mustang and the HSV GTS are actually community engagement cars. They are still police cars and are fully equiped with radar, ANPR, ELS and all that jazz but they aren't used for any normal policework. The sprinter and the 2 cars in the second last photo are actual police cars however. The sprinter is a mobile command centre.

Alright, I gotta do something different. Calling all members of this thread!

Lund is looking for 1980s unmakred/slicktop pictures from the LAPD. I thought I had some on my harddrive, but I do not. Even some moderate searching could not find any results.

Do any of you guys have any? Pretty much any vehicle from the 80s will do, but a Caprice is most likely what you will find, if any.

Hahahahah! Those are the only two pictures I could find. The first one is apparently a prop car used in a movie. The second is a detective vehicle, most likely. It appears to have no lights on it. Presumably had a fireball or something similar.

Flashball if anything like that. More than likely had the little flip down spotlamp in front of the rear-view mirror.

GMP Sierra RS Cosworth, Capri 2.8is.jpg

Bit of a blast from the past, although in my personal opinion - The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth was simply the best police car of all time. The picture reveals one of the Greater Manchester Traffic Unit Cosworth's parked alongside one of its predecessors - The Ford Capri 2.8i Special! a regular sight on the streets of Manchester throughout the 1980's. I believe the actual  Sierra in the picture was operational in the Salford/Bolton areas. I was also lucky enough to have a few ride along's in a few of the Cosworth's - and on full emergency - was really quite an experience. GMP also had a fleet of Unmarked Cosworth's operating throughout the region, mainly used by the Stolen Vehicle Squad (SVS) and some traffic units had them as Enforcement vehicles - equipped with Tracker, Vascar and Video.

The SVS (or the X Cars Department) used high performance unmarked vehicles throughout the city and have had an interesting and colourful fleet over the years. A documentary can be seen to watch the team in action during the 90's:

Another interesting vehicle of the past in this unit was the almighty Talbot Sunbeam! These would be seen chasing criminals and stolen vehicles across the streets of Manchester throughout the 70's and early 80's era.

I found this pictures, as you can see they used the old LAPD setup (single red lamp in the front, single amber lamp in the back) that you also used in your unmarked 1985 Impala, maybe they even used the slightly newer slicktop/unmarked setup (single red lamp in the front, amber, and blue lamps in the back) also seen on the late 90s, 2000s slicktop Crown vics.

The pictures are from the 1992 LA riots, so I'm not sure if the new light setup was already used in the 80s. The old one (with the single amber light) was around since the 60s and can even be seen in some early 90s LAPD pictures so I'm 100% sure it was also used in the 80s , sadly some of the pictures are low quality, but you can hopefully make out the lights
