Bad Snow on east coast

No, but if so it would be because we have so many northerners moving down here. And if you don't like this topic move on to something else instead of trying to pick a fight with someone over the internet.

  • Stop the presses.       Southern folks: Much love, but there are no shortage of pickup trucks where you live. Attach a plow, get to work and stop crying. I drove to work during the vortex this

  • Woke up, shoveled driveway. Went inside for less than 10 minutes, had to shovel the same spots again. New England FTW!

  • Actually I do get updates on how much snow you get down there. Have you heard of a program called 'The News'? It reaches beyond the borders of my state sometimes, especially when other states are call

I don't think there are any statistics you can pull up to prove that. I did find some that say almost as many people left North Carolina to go to another state as people who came to North Carolina from other states and from another country combined:

I don't dislike the topic, I'm just sick of people saying how "crazy" 4 inches of snow is. They need some perspective.

Well then move on if you don't like to hear about it. Apparently others do.

Im from florida, I wish i had snow D:

You're not missing anything great, trust me. It's nice to look at, but it's not useful to us outside of that. I'd probably still rather have snow than Floridian hurricanes, or Californian earthquakes though.

Here in Indiana we got hammered with about 12" a few weeks ago and then about 8" a few weeks after that. I want it to warm up but at the same time I love the snow. Its going to get to a whopping 50 degrees next week and I will be outside in shorts and a t-shirt. Compared to -10 that is really warm.

Yes it is. It's supposed to be 50F here as well next week. Anything around 35-40F feels pretty good to me right about now. I got a bunch of new hiking gear I'm dying to use but it's not exactly bright to do that when the trails are being covered with snow and when it dips to 7F at night.

Yeah, 50 is kind of cold.

Yeah, 50 is kind of cold.

Well, people in colder areas adapt to the cold weather. When it begins to warm up, what people in California for example say is cold we call warm weather. But in the summer when it goes from 100 down to 50 degrees in the fall, it feels rather chilly to us.

yeah, I know just teasing.

As someone who was born and raised in New York and moved to North Carolina, I can definitely say the "state of emergency" that was declared was warranted, It is certainly NOT because of lack of effort on the local and state governments part that is causing the problem but lack of resources and experience.

I remember when I lived up in New York, we usually got a foot or two of snow in a DAY just around Christmas alone, that was normal, and the state was well equipped and experienced enough to deal with it.

However that is NOT the case at all in North Carolina, the last time besides now in recent memory we got this much snow was several years ago (what was it, 2009? 2010?) and that was just as much as a hampering on travel (and everything) as it is now.

As someone said earlier in the topic, for those who are used to the snow: Good for you, you have the resources and experience to deal with it easily and keep going on with your day no problem.

However again, down here in the usually sunny (and in my opinion, too hot in summer) South, we are NOT used to snow.

It doesn't snow all winter, hell we can't even get a few flakes on Christmas, but we get hit with this crap in FEBRUARY and what do you expect us to do? We are underequipped and inexperienced in handling this weather, but we're doing the best we can with what we have and in my opinion, that's all that counts.

Just my two cents.

Perhaps if people in the South learned that snow is slippery and slowed down when driving in it, there wouldn't be as many accidents as there has been? I'm sure all of those pile-ups happened because people didn't slow down. You obviously don't continue to drive 75 MPH when there's 2 inches of snow on the road. Slowing down to less than 30 (probably slower because the road crews are not prepared as well, therefore leaving the roads unprepared for snow travel) would prevent any accident from occurring. There would be no need for the National Guard if people used common sense.

The main reason for all those accidents was because of people leaving work just when the snow started to fall. Also the snow started to stick to the ground / road as soon as it started....We don't drive 75mph when it snows. The other problem is because some people don't buy 4 wheel drive cars, instead they all have mustangs

Northern states have government resources to deal with snow and snow removal, a budget to pay for it all and drivers who understand that weather conditions effect the way you car behaves. Some southern states don't have any of those things, and that's why everyone's freaking out.

We don't get many hurricanes or tornadoes either.

Since you're all on this topic I would like to bring something up.  I work for a water dept in the Great Lakes area and having to work outside in this crap is absolutely HORRIBLE.  It's not the snow that is causing the problems this year it is the below freezing temperatures.  Try being outside, all wet, jack hammering through almost 4' of frozen ground, in well below zero weather with a lowest windchill of -43.  Now your clothes freeze almost instantly as you're knee deep in water trying to repair broken mains, well that's as you get out of the holes.  We've had over 30 main breaks, I don't know how many service lines freezing on our side ( time to break out the welder and send a current through ), lines breaking at the plant.  My co-workers have put in 17 hour shifts on several occasions and still have to cater to people not leaving their water run so they freeze their pipes.  Once they freeze their pipes it works it's way back and breaks our meters, nice.

What I'm trying to say is please please PLEASE, leave the water run.  The worst happens when the cold snap ends and the temps start to rise, it's all science.  We're out there getting bitched and laughed at while risking our health to make sure you have water.  I'm out for a week after dealing with chest pains and my right arm not wanting to work, lost grip, mobility, strength and dexterity all because of the nerves in my back and neck going bonkers.  The chest pains got so bad it put tears in my eyes so I finally went to the doc's and he took me off work.  Now my co-workers are out there working their asses off without a simple thank you and it makes me sick.  Those guys deserve more appreciation for the hell they put themselves through and the hell they have to put up with.  Dealing with people coming up and complaining because they can't shower while you're standing there with your clothes frozen solid is insane.  You just want to knock their asses out and throw them in the hole but instead you have to tell them you're sorry for the inconvenience and will have it back on as soon as possible.

Please leave the water run when weather like this is happening.  If it was only snow that's great, it insulates the ground.  Since it's combined with below freezing temps, be thankful there is snow on the ground otherwise the situation would be much worse.  So please leave your water run as a very small stream, even that may not help.  Like I said, we've been jack hammering through almost 4' of frozen ground and our frost line is 32", well below the frost line.

Stay safe all

this last bit is bullshit

it doesn't matter what kind of car you drive, anything can be decent in the snow as long as you drive correctly and put the right tires on

I drive a powerful rear-wheel-drive car and I live in the north

I have not crashed

I have all-season tires like everyone else in the world
