"Fix" for Excessive Police Backup During Pursuits

Featured Replies

I know its happened to me a bunch, and its extremely annoying, 15 backup units and you all chasing one guy and crashing into each other. I found out (painstakingly tedious finding out) that if you edit the popcycle.dat file in GTAIV/Common/Data and change all the values for police cars to 1, it drastically cuts down on the amount of police in the game, and also makes it so you don't start a train of police cars on every chase. I had a chase that normally would attract at least 10 back up units (that I didn't even call, they were just roaming LC) only attract 1 straggler. The chase ended with 3 units and myself in pursuit, two that I called and one that was randomly picked up. Editing the file is very tedious and very time consuming, but worth it.

I told you that this was where the data was found...

I know you did, just reporting that it works on cutting down on the ridiculously excessive backup. You were right about how painful it was to edit also. lol

Or you could stop using 500k poly shitmobiles in police1 and police2. LCPD:FR is supposed to run on a vanilla version of the game.

Whether I'm running 10 poly models or 500k poly models, 10-15 back up units in a chase is completely ridiculous, especially if I'm not even calling for it.

I don't think more than 7-8 untis join, since it's limited. Once you reach a number of cars it doesn't go past that, and even if you spam backup you won't get more than 10 cars. So either stop using a Intel Pentium II and Windows 98, unmod police1 and police2 or do this. But don't ask the devs to, since it's not their problem if you mod the game. As said, LCPD:FR is supposed to run on a vanilla version of the game and just to tell you that it works, my fps never drops more than 1-2 fps in a chase with maximum car ammount and police1 and police2 are low-poly non-els mods.

First of all, I never asked the devs to do a thing, secondly, I'm using a 3.2ghz Quad Core and Win 7 64 bit, thirdly I don't have FPS problems, I have 10+ back up unit problems due to the game's native police population joining my pursuits uninvited.

It's almost impossible to get +10 units in a pursuit without calling backup. Even calling backup its still difficult to achieve 10 units, without spamming. This is due to the fact that its limited to 15 units per pursuit, including helicopters and units further away. If Im in a pursuit, I usually get 4-5 units to join in, if more join, I usually loose them within a time of 30 secs. So I really don't know what the problem with your game is.

I wish I had taken a screenshot of the chase I was in last night. When it was over, the suspect was surrounded by 10 police cars, 20 cops who all got out of them, and lasted about 2 seconds once they all opened fire.

I don't see what the problem is with people complaining on here. Its a fix that does what it says by removing excessive police cars, and it keeps people using ELS from crashing more often. +1 to kinksta and mclmrtn.

Sticks and stones may break bones, but 5.56 fragments on impact.

Break, I think you're being a little aggressive here. I agree that the amount of cars that join up gets a little excessive. In real life, it would be fine because the cars don't floor it and they fall in line. In the game they do not. Say what you want about polygons but this mod is more about how many vehicles bashing around the street we want to put up with. Remember that screenshot 1adam put up showing all the vanilla cars? It was a total clusterf*ck at the end of the chase. Suppose I call backup 3 times and then over a long chase I pass a bunch of stragglers? That's not fair to say "you should only get this, you're doing it wrong".

My frame-rate actually doesn't suffer badly enough after a chase with a bunch of cars to piss me off. It's just about how many cars I'm willing to dodge to avoid dying when I try to pull the driver out.

Thank you all for the mod here. Great thinking. I might try this later.

Actually, credit to Iconography too, who told me where the file was to edit in order to cut down on the police presence. When I edited I cut it to a max of 1 cruiser in each zone's subzones. It may be that is too few, but I have had positive results with it.

Just wanted to say thanks for posting this information. Not sure if the admins would let us but you could always post the your ammended dat file to the downloads section, save everyone the trouble of having to re-edit the doc.

Again thanks for looking into this bro!

Excellent fix, I'm definitely going to try this out.

Furthermore, I appreciate you coming up with this despite some unnecessary hostility.

Thanks for posing your file. Should make things easier for us less skilled folks :)

On a sort of related note, this also can also be edited if you want to reduce or increase how many peds of a specific type you want lurking around various cities in LC.

on an unrealted note could that be used to increase the ammount of random peds that have guns in the city? cuz those generic random gunfights are sometimes fun, i mean you would have to watch how much you increase it or you might end up with a out-of-control fight city.
