What kind of vehicle do you drive?

2001 Volvo S60.

I'm currently saving up for a new set of rims (I hate the chrome ones on there now). It came with an aftermarket Alpine radio with iPhone hookup, however I'm looking at changing the cable out since I'm getting an iPhone 5 this week. I'm also going to replace the Volvo badge on the trunk with the wider V O L V O badge seen on newer models.

Sometime in the near future I will most likely be procuring a retired CVPI; it shouldn't be too hard to find here in NY, and being that they are so commonplace I will probably attract little attention.  Column-mounted shifter, bench seat or buckets in the CVPI, great look; what's not to love? :D

A seller in Florida has quite a few nice ones for reasonable prices;

im currently saving up to buy a 09 or '10 challenger

they come around 15k so thats the prices range im looking for, going to try and pay for it flat out without a loan or anything to give myself some leg room with gas and insurances.

also to micheal v you might want to reconsider you choice, although the car might cost 15k to buy it you not thinking about all of the things that come with it.

gas, insurance, upkeep, audi's and beamers are high maintenance cars that cost alot to keep running properly and problem free and even then your not out of the way

also to the guy who wanted a jaguar, dont, jaguar's are notoriously unreliable, them and range rover, they make really great looking carts but they're terrible when it comes to reliability.

This baby has made it over 3 years now with a bad trans and no reverse lol but the engine runs great with the Vtec, not bad for $3,000 when I bought it and he even let me make payments so I got lucky.. sooner or later the trans will go though, but thus far it's been hold'n tight, it's a trooper baby!

Believe me, I am quite familiar with the "wacker" phenomenon.  Almost every single livery cab around my area are retired CVPIs; I will draw no attention and do not wish to - I only want a functional car that I enjoy the styling of and that is relatively easy to fix with a large amount of parts floating around.  The steel wheels will discourage wheel-theft, and the industrialized exterior will no doubt hold up well to light/cosmetic damages.  And while the MPG is a valid point, I am fairly certain I will get over 12.

If you really want to be a cop, so bad that your going to buy a retired cop car. Then don't be a cop. ((Those are the exact words from a police chief)) When you do go and apply at a police department and they find out you drive a retired police interceptor they will probably laugh in your face. The chief of police I know in my area said people who want to make police things 100% of there life never get hired because then they don't ever coup if something happened. Because they have police stuff all around them..... Will always remind them of what happened and they will never be able to take a break from it.

Lets say Johnson gets killed in the line of duty, you are heart  broken so they give you a few days off. Every time you look outside you see a retired police car, guess what is going to come back and haunt you?....

Well mpg is in the 10s.. really 16-18 to be accurate. Anyhow not my biggest issue with these.

If you want one i presume you haven't driven one. These cars are really pretty miserable when not loaded with equipment or given something to do in them.  That's why i am a fan of impala because they actually make decent (not good, just decent) cars in civilian form. So defenitely drive one before.. i know some people buy them sight unseen @ auctions for cheap and then wonder what they ended up with.. not that the car itself was anything tragic, just wasn't what they expected. If you have that covered and still want one, go for 2006+

2003 introduced the tachometer and better radio and 2006 saw the idle hour counter. I wouldnt touch one without it. Our county school police (all of 2 cars) are 2001s with under 9000 miles (srs). Idle hours are close to 20000 however. One engine was already replaced and the other is burning oil quite bad.  Defenitely something to watch out on these.. Parts aren't that cheap nor are the cars overly simple to work on and parts being available.. well you said it. Cab companies usually clean up any good parts asap. Here they have started using minivans because they got tired of fighting for parts for the crappy cvpi fleets. The largest county company is 100% cvpi and they suck up the market for counties in either direction. Other cab companies gave up and went for chevy astros, ford 500s, tauruses (the old ones), varios other domestic and imported minivans. Check to see if that isn't the same in your area.

Lastly, it is a myth that state cars are better than city cars or that "detective" cars are always better. Here we have the general county motor pool (public works, juvenile court (they got shafted!), housing authority and what have you not) and the sheriff motor pool. The magistrate and state court uses the sheriff motor pool unmarked stripped down detective cars (radio and some scarce assortment of various lights somebody didnt know where else to install). We only get to use them because we share the building and the DA in the past got that agreement through (gotta love the 90s!). Anyway, my point is i've gotten some of the crappiest junk heaps from the "detective" pool. They aren't maintained because they aren't mission critical. ie, if they crap in the middle of the road, nobody cares. Just call for a tow/pick and wait. So don't fall for the detective gimmick or pay more money for a car from a particular agency. I see that one in at least 1 of 5 ads and always makes me smile.

Good luck with the car hunting.

That was possibly one of the most random replies I've ever had the pleasure of reading.  I want a vehicle that is barebones, something that can take the abuse of NYC and continue kicking.  Being that there are freaking CVPIs everywhere, it seems like a decent choice.  I've always loved large, American-made sedans that are RWD in addition; if I was willing to look for an older car it would probably be a Buick Roadmaster/Cadillac Fleetwood/Chevrolet Caprice.  Not because of their official uses, but because of what type of vehicle they are.

The occupational situation has nothing to do with this and also is based completely upon assumption.

Thank you very much for the tips on that; I was planning on going with a 2005+ but seeing as the idle-hour counter is of the utmost importance I don't see a problem in bumping it up a year.  I have driven and ridden in Crown Victorias before, whether they were yellow taxis or livery cabs as I currently reside in Queens, NY; they are just about everywhere, as are their parts.  I will keep the bit on what each car was used for in mind as well - you bring up an excellent point and your experience in the market is always appreciated. :D

Well, considering new cars lower in value a lot, I will be buying used. By looking at the cars today, I would guess they will lower in value a lot. I am no rich kid by all means, but by looking at the prices for new cars, I can get a luxury for the same price used. My dream car at the moment will be a coupe, and a sport model coupe.

For example:

BMW 3 Series < BMW M3

Audi A5 < Audi S5

I am leaning towards these cars. At the moment, they are around 20-30,000. But I am almost positive they will lower in value in the next 3 years, when I drive to about 15,000.

I don't care much for gas prices, though I should, I just want a sexy car.

I'd recommend the S5, it's really fun to drive.

Seeing that I haven't gotten my driving license yet, even though I'm of age, I can't drive anything yet. But if I do drive soon, it will most likely be one of my parents cars. What I really want are a 1969 Chevy Camaro SS orange w/ black stripes and a 454 big block, a 1972 Chevy Chevelle SS same color and engine as the Camaro, and a Dodge Ram 3500 Diesel.

My mom's car 2000 Subaru Outback (actual color):

My dad's car 2005 Ford Focus ZX5 (actual color)(I love this little thing!!):

Or my Gram's car 1999 Ford Escort:

I used to own a retired 2003 Sheriff Crown Victoria as my first car but had issues with a bad wiring somewhere in the car that kept making the headlights go out during the night time and my transmission went bad on top of that. I had it for a year and a half. I'm NEVER buying a retired cop car EVER again.. Lesson learned!

Right now I drive my Grandmom's car. A 2007 Toyota Corolla red'ish/burgundy color. I'm looking to buy a 2012+ dodge charger color black in the near future. At first I hated the look of it but for some reason now I love those cars.

I want to participate in this conversation, but I have too many vehicles in my family and if I posted pictures of them all, I would look like an insane douche. :-)

I'm jealous on 1000 levels.

I drive a white 98 Ford Windstar. You don't really see them on the road anymore because they either broke or got turned in during cash for clunkers. I've been considering buying a CVPI, mainly because they are cheap and have that wonderful V8 engine. I'm not planning on becoming a police officer, and I don't want to buy it to look like one, it is simply a well-made american car :). I do know that most CVPI's get the crap beat out of them during its life as a police cruiser, but cab companies seem to love them for their durability. I figure as long as you thoroughly mechanically inspect it before buying, it could be a good car.

I am getting my licence soon and I probably will be driving either my moms Honda Civic (which is a piece of crap) or hopefully my grandpas Ford Focus. My dream car though is a 2012 or 2013 Dodge Charger.
