I actually thought Vista was fine, up until my esoteric "generic USB keyboard" stopped working (I *think* the USB drivers broke for some reason). Fortunately, I had already installed the Win7 beta on a dual-boot, so I completely switched to that.

Also, why would they start working on 128 bit Windows? Has any hardware manufacturer released a 128 bit instruction set? Because without that, I really don't have any idea what they could be doing.

  • Yay. I just bought a new pc and it has Windows 8 on it and it's awesome, the only reason people hate it is because they don't understand how to use it lol.

  • If you want some stupid OS built for a phone or tablet with a new for the sake of new interface, get it, if you want a laptop or desktop OS, stick with 7 or XP, or Linux/Windows dual boot(Win for gami

  • That's good with me, you can think of it what you want, I don't want to come across as though you're not entitled to that. But the original poster is seeking a suggestion about whether Windows 8 shoul

I say nay. Mostly because I don't like the layout of it. If I had to get it though, I would.

Again, it's going to take a while for that OS to be fully developed and ready for use, but the amounts of RAM we gobble up and math equations we shove through the CPU & GPU (when applicable) all the time will call for that extra memory address space. Instruction sets will ultimately be the deciding factor on where computer performance goes from here. Even CPU giants Intel and AMD have admitted that developing multi-core processors is merely delaying the inevitable. We will eventually need to switch to a different type of processor. Our tactics have switched from clock speed, to work per clock cycle, to number of cores, and will eventually switch back to better instruction sets. After that though, it will be back to clock speed again, but only after we use a new material for developing CPU chips, like graphite. IBM was able to get a prototype CPU based on graphite rather than silicon, cloked at 100GHZ on a single core as a proof of concept. The barrier for clock speed right now is heat. And until we overcome that, we have to buy time and milk all the efficiency we can out of our current hardware.

My point isn't that we won't switch to 128 bit, it's that there really isn't that much to do until we have a better idea what it will look like.

it is windows 7 leaner and meaner with a new start menu, ignore the starrt menu and its a better windows 7 simple

I don't really see a point in switching to Win 8.

Unless Microsoft is gonna force me to Update i'm not gonna do it.

I'm happy with Win 7

Better performance and updated Direct X features should be enough for any dedicated gamer to get a $69 upgrade.

I will type the same thing I always type/say when someone types/says a price like that.

Are you going to pay? No, then nor will I.

I will spend my money on more important things, for one not ruining my computer.

Nothing wrong with paying the dev company who made a software product you want to buy. I apply that logic with all games, programs or OS's I get. If you don't wanna pay for it to have it, so be it, I guess. I'd hardly call performance enhancements and extra features ruining your computer. Changing your UI is another story.

If I wanted a performance boost, and I don't as I already have extremely smooth running games, I would use Linux + KDE† + OpenGL, that combination gives outstanding performance. Shame that Linux gaming has made as much progress as PC vs console has.

I think I phrased my last post wrong:

Anyone "upgrade"d their 7 install to 8? I am curious if M$ have finally managed an upgrade that does not screw the system up.

I put Windows 8 professional on my laptop because i can get all microsoft software for free because of my study, And it has its negative and good points.

For instance i love the integrated Mail. But the skype is horrible !.

For people that miss there start button or want those annoying corner menu's gone there are applications out there to do that for you !. I use them

I will make a virtual pc hold on then try to upgrade there from windows 7 to 8 and see what happens :)

I didnt do it on my laptop cause i was scared from last times :)

Back in town!

I used to have it but went back to Windows 7. I didn't like it at all. If you have a touchscreen computer then I can understand why you would like Windows 8, but even if I had a touch screen computer I would only get it if I had no other choice! I will stay its Windows 7 unless Microsoft manage to somehow force everyone to upgrade.

I can't be assed to pay $70 for a 'newer' windows when my 7 is running smooth as hell. Why would anyone buy a new product when the previous one hasn't expired/broken already?

i just don't see any point in switching to it now.

Win 7 is perfectly fine for me.

I don't say Win 8 is not good. But from things that i have seen..it's not that good that i'm gonna pay 70$ for an upgrade.

*just my opinion*

Take a look at Windows XP and tell me that again.

And going back to the OpenGL/Linux combo comment for a second, if you think OpenGL is in any way sueprior to DirectX, then you've stumped me as to why. The only benefit as far as I'm concerned is that it's open source. It's always a few years behind DirectX in terms of detail level, and a lot of developers don't bother to code for it at all. STEAM is coming to Linux platforms which will help when some devs decide to port their old games over to Linux, but it won't make any significant headway any time soon. Stick with Windows (insert you preferred version here) for games.

I dunno about you but here most of IT and multimedia related companies still use XP and have no problems with it whatsoever. They set up their PCs for employees with XP and would not upgrade to either 7 or 8 because it would take a lot of time and money to do that with no or negligible effects on employees' work output. More trouble than its worth.

Same goes for Linux. They use Linux in my dad's office. I think it was when W7 was released, I last went to his office with him and I saw his work PC was equipped with a 'better than vista' looking Linux version (don't ask me what was the name I'm a complete moron when it comes to linux; its meant for professionals). I don't think they'll be upgrading to 8 or even 9, for that matter.

As for myself, I've already said- the thumb rule for all my softwares is: If it ain't broken, don't fix it. I learnt this lesson with my first graphic card. Driver issues, y'know.

i like windows 8, i find it inovating.

if you like windows 7 keep, pipe down and shut up.

windows 8 wasnt designed for everybody in mind simply because that not possible.

windows 8 was designed to further windows, i'll be getting a microsoft surface pro early next year and i have to say that i'm quite eager to get my hands on windows 8

i always hated windows xp, it always ran very slow and took a long time to boot up.

on the other hand i found that i loved windows vista more then i like xp.

windows 7 doesn't seem very different from vista and therfore i really cant say it's better worse or what have you.

but i do like the direction mircosoft took windows 8. using the same generic version of something gets bland after a while and sometimes you got to switch things up to keep it fresh and original. windows 8 headed in that exact direction in my opinion. i truly dont see what all the fuse is about. it just seems to me that most of you arent very open mined to change.

if only some of you were to use windows 8 for more then just a couple of minutes, say a week or two you'll see that windows 8 isnt that bad, but if you insist of staying with your current os then so be it, but dont put down the os simply because you think it's trash and horrible and whatever, i pretty sure microsoft had a reason for heading in such direction as they did.
