.exe is a common filename extension denoting an executable file (the main execution point of a computer program). In laymans terms: It's the two main game files. LaunchGTAIV.exe and GTAIV.exe

They're both pretty much equal when it comes to crashes, although some users have reported that EFLC is more stable.

That is never recommended. What you are supposed to do is to install them one by one to find out which mod conflicts with your setup. Not much to do than to start over again.
