[REL] Traffic Control - Close off the road while you investigate and clear a scene!

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

Please be gentle, as this is my very first script mod.

One of my biggest frustrations is having to clean up a scene (after a pursuit or shootout), only to have traffic driving through the crime scene, hitting vehicles, or worse, police officers. If either the player or an AI officer gets hit, the AI officers go batshit, and start shooting at that car. The NPC civilians then go batshit, driving over anything and everything to get the hell out of there.

This might be implemented by the LSPDFR team later, but for now, to try and help mitigate this, enter my new Stop Traffic mod!

As the name implies, this plugin will stop all traffic within a certain radius of the player's location when the mod is enabled. All cars will come to a stop, and will remain stopped until you hit the assigned key again. I may also make the mod disable itself automatically if the player goes too far from the scene, and I am also looking at customizing it a bit more. For instance, maybe the officer can choose whether to simply slow down traffic (and then use barricades to close one lane), or close the road entirely.

This script is being developed for the Rage hook, and I am currently testing it. I also need to add things like the ability to change the default key, and perhaps controller support. But mainly I want to make sure it works properly. I don't want traffic being stopped/started repeatedly while entering names into the new LSPDFR 0.2 laptop, for example.

I expect this to be released fairly soon, though, at least as a beta, anyway. If anyone would like to help me out with testing, feel free to post here. I have not yet decided whether to do a limited beta testing period, but if I do, I might send it to a few people before releasing it to the public.

Known Issues

- Unfortunately, if you impose a speed limit, or stop all traffic, all NPC support vehicles, including, but not limited to tow trucks, coroner vans, AND backup POLICE UNITS will ALSO OBEY these restrictions. There is currently no known fix for this issue, but both FinKone and I are working on it.

UPDATE (AUG 13, 2015) - This issue has been resolved in v0.5.0, but it is still experimental at this stage, and is disabled by default. The feature can be enabled in the config file.

Great idea! I think I'll do that. It won't be in the very first version, but I don't see this being that difficult.

I still need to test this heavily though. I have not tried stopping traffic and then pulling out a gun and shooting, so I don't know how the AI will react. It remains to be seen whether the NPC civilians will continue staying stopped, or if their panic attacks will override it.

This is really nice the circle is nice too but I think that maybe a rectangle would be cool so you stand toward the traffic you want to stop and anyone past that rectangle/line stops instead of a whole circle and people just stopping in the middle of a scene.

If anyone happens to use this plugin, this is going to come up, so I wanted to mention it.

I have not had a chance to test in detail how the AI police and other support vehicles (namely the tow truck and coroner spawned by FinKone's police radio) react when we stop or slow down traffic with this plugin. That is actually the next thing I want to test, but I have a feeling that the tow truck and coroner will do exactly as the AI traffic will.

If this is indeed the case, and this mod interferes with the police radio support vehicles, here is a workaround, for now:

- Close the road completely (stop all traffic) only if necessary. Clean up the scene as best as you can, and move all vehicles to the side of the road. Try to only block one (or max, two) lane of traffic, so that the other lanes are kept open.

- Then, let the traffic flow again, and limit their speed to 20 MPH if desired. If there is a lot of traffic, the tow truck or coroner will take longer to arrive, but they will definitely get there eventually.

Any other feedback or bug reports are appreciated.

Thanks!

EDIT: I have tested this plugin with other vehicles involved, including a tow truck, coroner van, and backup police units.

ALL OF THEM obeyed the speed restrictions, including POLICE units that were responding Code 3 to a backup call...which is frustrating.

I have spoken to FinKone (since his tow trucks and coroners are included in this problem) and we are both working to find a solution. But for now, there is no known fix. The only workaround is to do as I suggested above. Only stop traffic completely if ABSOLUTELY necessary. Instead, clear the scene as quickly as possible, and allow traffic to flow through at a limited speed of 20 MPH.

VERSION 0.5.0 HAS BEEN RELEASED!

  • Compiled with RPH v0.22 (You will need to update RPH if you haven't already!)
  • Added the ability to change both the radius of the roadblocks, as well as the 20 MPH speed limit!
    • This can be done via the config file
  • Made a change to the "Stop All Traffic" mode
    • A BIG change!!
    • Ready for it? Drum roll please...
      • Emergency vehicles, including police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, and tow trucks and coroner vans will no longer be affected when you stop all traffic!!!
      • And yes, this works with FinKone's tow trucks and coroner vans
      • Albo's prisoner vans? Well, yeah, obviously...those are POLICE vehicles, but yes
      • This mode will also limit the speed of nearby traffic to 30 MPH or less
      • The bad news? It's still experimental, and can be a tad iffy at times. But I still wanted to include it
      • As such, this feature is disabled by default.
        • To enable it, go into the config file, and change the value of PoliceIgnoreRoadblocks from 0 to 1.

  • Code optimizations
  • And, sorry guys, as I was typing this (after I uploaded the new version), I realized I forgot to "un-hardcode" the CTRL modifier key and make it customizable! Sorry folks, next update, I promise!

NOTE: If you have my Code 3 Callouts plugin, YOU MUST UPDATE IT TO v0.3.0!! THIS VERSION HAS JUST BEEN RELEASED TODAY (AUG 13, 2015)

IF YOU DO NOT UPDATE CODE 3 CALLOUTS, LSPDFR WILL CRASH IF YOU USE THIS VERSION OF TRAFFIC CONTROL!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!

No, it's compatible. You likely have an old Stealth.Common DLL.

Comments like, "it's crashing" aren't helpful unless you post a log file.

Is there anything else to do that is not in the instructions when installing besides the stated drag and drop process? I did so and pressing Ctrl+U does nothing (or any other control for this mod). Did I miss something?
