Is Rockstar Games Getting Their Ideas/Creations from Modders?

Featured Replies

So I have been thinking a little bit. Some people may say it's a coincidence that these items are in the game, while some might find it suspicious. But do you guys think that Rockstar Games has been paying attention to the modding community, and implemented the modder's ideas, thoughts, and even creations into their own version for their games?

For example, the police esperanto:

Lt. Caine's modification:

Rockstar Games' Police Esperanto:

One of the most downloaded modifications, ELS (emergency lighting system):

Rockstar Games' "ELS"

There is also a vehicle where someone took the GTA IV MTL Packer and placed it on the Phantom's frame, but I cannot find the modification, but this is basically what it looked like:

There is much more, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

What do you guys think, did they use modder's ideas and try to create their own? Or is it just a coincidence? Post your opinions.

I do ask that you be respectful to me and others in the topic thread. No need to get violent over this topic! :D

If you found any other similarities, please post here!

I am pretty sure that Rockstar Games are influenced by real-life, just as we are. I am sure they aren't blind to modding creations, but them as us, are inspired by real life. They surely see the modding community, I just don't think they're inspired by it as much as people may think.

And on top of that, correct me if I'm wrong, Rockstar doesn't support the modding community. In fact I think they hate it.

Rockstar doesn't necessarily hate the Modding Community (In my opinion), it's just given them a lot of head aches. The whole Hot Coffee scandal made them loose quite a bit of money in law suits and spending on damage control. I think Rockstar has been sorta impartial to modding.

I think they recognize the issues modding can bring to their game with legality issues, copyrights, and bad media. So they try to suppress it but I'm sure Rockstar knows there's only so much they can do before the game is made mod able. Plus you have to remember they're a business and the guys upstairs are going to keep telling the devs "We don't want anymore issues", the devs could love modders, but they still want to have a job at the end of the day.

It's entireley plausible that they've had some inspiration from some files, but Rockstar has a great amount of talented developers whom I'm sure have come up with their own ideas. Just like ineseri said, they take ques from real life and modify them.

I think they are definitely taking some ideas from how people modified GTA IV to improve the gaming experience in the new title.

At the same time I think they just want people to play their damn game correctly.

Makes sense. Thanks for taking the time to type that out!

Hard to say they might be influenced by modders because I think they mostly hate modders. Then again modders are half their bussiness. But a sale to them is just another drop in the bucket. But the modding community sales are like a tusnami in the bucket so if they make them unhappy they go broke. So I would say they make stuff in game like mods so people think "Oh I don't have to mod it because this is just what I want! Thanks R*!"

The examples you gave are terrible.

I very much doubt Rockstar modernizing how lights work on the police vehicles in GTA V is them "Copying ELS", and I'm fairly certain them re-using their own vehicle assets isn't them "copying other peoples vehicle mods".

Rockstar's featured the occasional mod on Newswire; I think "gives them headaches" is exactly right. If they really hated the modding community, they could make it really, really annoying for modders to operate using IP law (for instance: any mod car based on a car from GTA? Copyright infringement. Any video showing off a mod's gameplay, that isn't within the fairly narrow category of fair use? Copyright infringement. That kind of thing.) I think they generally are cool with modders doing impressive stuff that keeps people talking about GTA well after its release, but that doesn't extend to particularly wanting to help them.

It's almost like a marketing strategy tool as well. The only reason I wanted GTA IV PC is because of the mods. If this game wasn't moddable, I would stick to GTA IV Xbox 360. People see all these mods people create and they say "man that looks cool! I want that!" Once they find out that it's PC only, they go out and buy GTA IV PC. It's almost like modders are doing unpaid advertising.

Modders take inspirations from real life. R* takes inspirations from real life. Doesn't mean R* takes inspiration from modders. The examples that you gave:

  1. Its true Caine modified an Esperanto into  a police version. But then again, he modified a ton of other stock vehicles like Dilettante, Speedo, Landstalker, etc.
  2. Its not ELS, my friend. Its just how the newer LED bars look like in the current era. GTA IV was made before 2008 and LEDs had only started to take over the world then. ELS is not one of a kind. Its inspired by real-world LEDs. Like I said, R*'s inspiration too was real-world (LEDs), and not a GTA IV mod.
  3. That truck mod is no rocket science and anyone can imagine such a truck. I'm not completely ruling out inspirations from the modding community, but its highly unlikely.
