And then, we are saying it's an abuse TO PEOPLE THAT ARE FORCED TO DO THIS THERAPY BY SOMEONE ELSE.

So why should they be tortured (BECAUSE IT IS TORTURE, BOTH PHYSICALLY AND PSYCHOLOGICALLY) just to bend to the view of someone else? That makes no sense at all, if the US are the land of freedom, then they should be free to be who they want.

Maybe you should have stressed that part more. Me too, following this topic from the beginning, was in trouble realizing what exactly do you want to ban - the therapy itself or the possibility of a forceful treatment.

I have to tell  you that the petition text says, quote

We respectfully seek your help to ban the practice known as 'conversion therapy'

with no reference to forceful treatment.

I'm sorry for referring to my country again, but under Russian law a person can only be a subject to a therapy like that or any other similar treatment when this person is 21 (If I remember the age right). So a)no one except him can decide what to do, b)at least he aint' 16 or 17 y.o. and has some experience in life.

Well, to me (and that's only my point of view), if some people are willingly doing this, good for them, if that's what they want I'm not going to stop them, as long as that's their choice, and their choice only. That's when someone (and apparently most of the time teens) is forced to do it that it becomes a problem to me. I signed this petition because so far there was no other alternative. If there was a petition asking to actually legislate this kind of therapy (for example, only people of legal age and attesting they are doing this on their own will can do this conversion), then I'd sign that instead.

I guess you can start your own.

This is an American petition. Is there a similar problem in Europe as well? It would be a shame.

Never heard of that in France at least. We are a bit more "open" when it comes to LGBT community. We legalized same-sex marriage and adoption in 2014 for example.

I thought France had a lot of anti-gay marches in 2014.

I thought France had a lot of anti-gay marches in 2014.

There were anti-same-sex marriage marches, and there was actually around ten times more people doing marches in favor of the law.

First things first, you can ask the law to actually change your legal gender and completely change from male to female on your papers, or the other way around as long as you provide proofs that you are now anatomically of that gender and psychiatric testimonies attesting you are actually acting like this gender in your everyday life. So YES, what he thinks matters. And even though, for freak sake, we are talking about a human being, what he thinks ALWAYS matters, we are not in some kind of dictatorship where people have no freedom. It's also kind of weird for a US citizen (who are always bragging about freedom) to say that what someone thinks doesn't matter, it should matter.

And then, we are saying it's an abuse TO PEOPLE THAT ARE FORCED TO DO THIS THERAPY BY SOMEONE ELSE. Sorry for the caps, but apparently you have trouble getting that point. To make things simple for you, I'll make an analogy. Let's imagine you love chocolate. But in this world, loving chocolate is frowned upon because everyone loves vanilla. Do you think it'd be normal to torture you, for example like in the video, placing ice blocks on your fingers to hurt you when you see a picture of chocolate to assimilate the pain to chocoloate, to force you to hate chocolate by deep reflex and love vanilla instead? I don't think it is, because everyone is free to be what they want. Who are they disturbing if they want to be gay, bisexual, transgender? Does that affect your life? No? So why should they be tortured (BECAUSE IT IS TORTURE, BOTH PHYSICALLY AND PSYCHOLOGICALLY) just to bend to the view of someone else? That makes no sense at all, if the US are the land of freedom, then they should be free to be who they want.

And I won't even adress your issue about suicide, it's not the topic, and I find it perfectly disgusting and inhuman.

Well he never changed it legally so it's a guy.

Again, how can you say it's torture when NUMEROUS PEOPLE GO ON THEIR OWN FREE WILL? Nobody seems to be grasping that. While we're banning this, let's ban child psychiatrists since parents force their children to undergo treatment for psych issues but they end up killing themself.

Why would you ban something because one person killed them self because of it? How is it torture when numerous people want to use that therapy? Tell all the people, that experienced success using that treatment, that it's torture.

Nearly every major medical or psychological association would disagree with you. They all report that conversation therapy is not based on any kind of real scientific methodology and that it's effects are quite harmful. They also report that, because research strongly suggests sexual orientation is immobile, that conversation therapy "successes" are instances where the homosexual desires have been repressed or subdued, but they do still exist.

If someone voluntarily undertakes this "therapy," so be it. No one however, whether they're an adult or a minor, should be forced to do this. Do you at least agree that making someone involuntarily do this is wrong?

If you actually really read what I posted when I replied to you and after, you'd have seen that:

Please if you want to answer to me, at least make sure you understood my point of view. I'll stress it one last time: WE ARE TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE FORCED TO DO THIS THERAPY AGAINST THEIR WILL.

Yes, now I get what you're saying. I still don't consider it torture or abuse though. I'm just against forcing people to go get help for something they don't want.

But I don't think people really understand what this topic is about. On the petition it clearly states to ban the therapy. So I belive people on here have no idea what they actually signed.

As I stated, I personally signed because there was no other alternative at the moment, and considering I'm not a US citizen I doubt I can start a petition myself to ask for a legislation of the conversion therapy.

A very wise decision. Check back though, some of these debates get very entertaining and tense.

I think they did the right thing, therapy was the right way to go.

Personally I hate gays.

This is the most hateful and dumbest comment I have read, why do you hate gays?

"I'm a marked man, so I'm getting out of here"
