The death penalty

Featured Replies

Hey guys, so right now I'm currently reading a book on the death penalty, and with it being a debatable subject I want to know your opoion,

Does the death penalty deter crime, is it humane, is it applied fairly, all these points taken into consideration.

Oh and let's keep jokes to a minimum.

  • MODERATOR NOTICE Can we keep this on the topic of the death penalty and knock it off with the personal jabs at each other? Thanks.

Personally I'm torn. Yes there are alot of bad people out there that don't deserved to still be having hair and are wasting tax dollars keeping them in prison. but what if we do it to someone that later was proven not guilty.

I too am torn. I really only support it for inhumane stuff like decapitations, serial killers, serial rapist or maybe terrorist. Not the 14-1700s where people were put to death fro petty thefts and s***

Yah you know there's a lot of people who say the death penalty isn't fair. But I don't think its fair to let the assholes that rape little kids, blatantly kill innocent people and many other things continue to consume air while others suffer with the loss of loved ones.

Bulllets aren't that expensive and the monsters on death row sure as hell do not deserve a lethal dose of expensive shit. Firing squad would hose 'em all waiting for 10+ years real quick.

And if anyone wants to pitch the question of "Is this how you would want to be treated" Yah, you know if I ever go crazy and kill a bunch of people just going about their day or do whatever, please do execute me.

If you commit a crime so terrible that you're eligible to receive the death penalty, then I have no sympathy for you. The death penalty is not inhumane, and should remain in modern politics and law.

OMG I love that quote one of my favorites actually, this is what I say to students who don't follow rules, if you can't do the time, then stop skipping class. :D

I think the death penalty is a VERY good system, when there is evidence that directly shows the accused person did the crime. I would also say that the way the death penalty is carried out is about as humane as could be..Is it a deterrent? I would say it is, if only it was used more...to get on death row takes a lot in my state, and we VERY RARELY execute someone...maybe death row isn't a deterrent...but it at least takes care of the problem after they commit a crime.

I always enjoy when I'm the only person in the entire class to have actually done my homework, and everyone wants to copy me. Especially when I do my homework incorrectly and the entire class fails the assignment.

Some death penalties are extremely expensive, lethal injection being the expensive one.. from a tax payers stand point, I don't want to have to pay for either, however, no one has the right to play angels & demons either, it's completely sanctioned murder sanctioned by the U.S Government.

The U.S. Government is a conglomerate of incompetent fools.

I agree with the death penalty a life for a life but the way the system works in most states it takes years before the person is put to death.I think it should be a fast process, your found guilty death penalty applies they should be out to death within 30 days

I agree with your point, but I disagree when you say that the death penalty should be a fast process. The death penalty should be a long process, because someone's life is about to be taken. Last I checked, that's kind of a big deal. The last thing that a state government needs, is to have accidentally put someone to death.

I fully support the death penalty and think it should be expanded on. It should apply to serious crimes such like murder, rape, child molestation, etc. And none of this continuous appeals that keep you on death row for 30 years either, you should get one maybe two chances for an appeal and if you are still found guilty after spending 5-10 years on death row then they should just get it done with. I understand that people are worried about executing an innocent person but considering how advanced forensic science has come I find it hard to believe we are locking up that many innocent people. At the very least these people should get a life sentence without the possibility of parole. I can't stand murderers (people who have taken the life of another human being) get a 20 year sentence then get out on parole 5 years later, that is a bunch of horse shit. You just ended somebody's life, why should you be allowed to continue on with yours?

And the people who say it isn't a deterrent, that is because our justice system is weak and rarely hands down harsh punishments. Even if we did start sentencing people to death more and it didn't reduce crime I wouldn't give a shit. Mr. Buckley put it pretty well, if the murderer is dead than at least it deters one person from murdering someone because that is a guarantee that they won't hurt someone again.

Looking at it from the other side, expanding the death penalty only increases the reckless abandon of the criminal.

An extreme example, if the penalty for assault was death, how many people are actually gonna give up? How many people will admit they did something wrong? If I committed a crime, knowing I was gonna get a needle, I'd say "Fuck 'Da Police!", and fight them until they shoot me. There needs to be a balance of power. Otherwise anarchy will reign supreme, and the supposed deterrent becomes the motivator to avoid capture and increase lethality.

That is a very extreme exaggeration. We are talking about serious crimes here, not simple assaults. The crimes that people should be sentenced to death for are crimes where they have already shown no regard for human life. Besides, that logic isn't exactly true. There have been plenty of murderers who just gave up, they did not care that they were going to be caught even if it meant the death penalty. I don't think expanding the death penalty would have a serious effect on how reckless criminals are. Considering how reckless some people are to evade a simple traffic ticket I would imagine there would be little to no increase on recklessness from murderers and rapist.
