South Bronx and decay in NYC - the reference for 'The Wasteland'

I'll be adding here some stuff about SoBx from 70s to 90s; videos, photos, real life stories. Feel free to discuss, ask etc.

At the first glance let's see how it looked like in 80s:

@strike:

I didn't know two of the pics you pasted, good findings!

@FCV96:  I didn't even started! That was only a warm-up LOL

Here's the story:

The Bronx in The 1980's PART 1 [video from my 1st post]

You can see two different station houses on this video:

nypdcom4_zpse39a44ad.jpg

 * 42nd PCT called "Warriors of the wasteland" which was a popular catch-phrase on their T-shirts (I'll post some later), the house acted 41st in "Fort Apache the Bronx" (1981 movie)

42ndpctimlangford_zpsaa81bb75.jpg

 * 41st PCT - "Fort Apache" located at 1086 Simpson St., later known as "Little House on the Prairie," because two-thirds of the 93,900 people who lived within its boundaries in 1970 had fled (NY Times). Take a look, how it looked like in practice:

'71 - Simpson St., heading Westchester Ave. (T. Walker: Return to Fort Apache):

'83 - the station house (Dan Russo, Jr.), you can see that the buildings from the first photo do not exist anymore:

"Saturday Night at Fort Apache " answered partially the question why "Fort Apache". On the first video I posted you can see a scene of an attack on the precinct from the movie which was based on real events, they weren't rare. Here's a quote from an ex-NYPD member who had been working there in 70s and describes the reality:

NYCTPF:

One winter night, coming to work around 1730, the station house was under siege..about a thousand natives trying to storm the station house to free their roving cop fighter neighborhood mayor...

The big station house doors were pulled shut by the cops inside, parked radio cars were on fire or flipped over..

I had to detour around the station house block to get to the block north of the station house..Other TPF cop and our bosses had done the same...

At that time we had no lockers and dressed out of our private cars...everyone quickly suited up and on went the helmets..... 4-1,4-3, 4-2 cops responding to the SH 13s joined in and the blue windmill of nightsticks and axe handles went into action..... About10 minutes of wild free-for-all clubbing and it was over..

Treat it as a series, I'll be adding here different stuff (eg. what gorillas and sharks has in common with South Bronx) systematically to not to bore you too much

Brooklyn had quite fucked up places as well.

Brooklyn's pretty cleaned up now, bunch of new glass condos and the Barclays Center, yeah theres still some shady areas but it's nice how they turned it around though.

I must have seen that video dozens of times. If you check at 2:45, a NYPD traffic K car passes by with an orange light bar, an oddity!

I personally like this one, driving to Brooklyn in 1987. Instant cargasm.

The second part, uploaded only few days ago. It's annoying with all the music and framing, though.

Here's some footage from 1991. Skip to 7:23 for something pretty awesome.

Whoa! Check out 0:14 in this video. That NYPD RMP has a Dual Comm on it, not to mention that it has those front fascia lights that were a more expensive option. The grille makes me want to say that it is a Chrysler Fifth Avenue, but they were certainly more expensive than the standard Plymouth Gran Furys.

Great stuff guys!

@strike: I actually thought that there will be only 1 part of that video. I'm glad I was wrong.

@FCV96: superb findings! It seemed to me that there's no footage with Diplomat/FA/GF. The car from 2nd vid is probably Chrysler Le Baron (= Fifth Ave?)

That makes sense, LtFlash. I tend to associate the LeBaron name with the K-platform car, and forget about the M-body that preceded it. The LeBaron of that generation and the comparable Fifth Avenue look very similar, however. Hell, one is probably a trim level of the other, or something to that effect.

Fifth Avenue

K-Car LeBaron

--------------------

EDIT: I overlooked something. The LeBaron was produced on Chrysler's M platform from 1977-1981, whereas the Fifth Avenue was produced on the M platform from 1982-1989. The Fifth Avenue's year range coincides with the 1982-1989 M-body Gran Fury, and the 1980-1989 M-body Diplomat. The fact that the RMP had a Dual Comm on it [mostly used during the late 70s] lends credence to the notion that it could be a LeBaron, but with the constant recycling of lightbars onto other vehicles it is truly anyone's guess.

OK, let's get back to the Bronx.

As I mentioned station houses have their nicknames, most of them are called a Fort [something], eg. 84 - Fort Panic, 66 - Fort Surrender, 67 - Fort Jah and so on, there was exceptions - 42nd - Warriors of the Wasteland, 77th - The Alamo etc. The nickname kinda defined the precinct. They also had their specific t-shirts/graphic motives, here's some of them:

BTW - that's Ralph Friedman, one of the most famous NYPD cop. He "participated" in like 16 shootings... You can see him on the NY Illustrated report from Fort Apache - FCV96 posted that video.

Wow this brings back memories I started on the job in 1989

gatekeeper, it's great to have you on board. Feel free to take a part in this thread. The 90's were busy for the Department, I'm sure you got some interesting stories you might want to share.

Also, I've one more picture for you:

I want to recommend Compeast's model of this truck. It was created as a memento of 9/11:

Compeast:

"Model is based on NYPD ESU Mack R Bronx Truck Nine, functioning during the 90's, and died during the WTC attack."
