Do you think what this officer did was right?

Featured Replies

Completely justified, that's as good a shooting as they come, by the book.

As far as the taser option goes, people need to remember that police escalate their use of force based on the actions of the suspect. When a suspect has a deadly weapon like a knife, the suspect's actions have dictated that a taser is no longer an appropriate or safe option. Most departments train that in that situation, a taser or any other less lethal option should only be used with lethal cover from a secondary officer.

This officer was alone, in a strangers house, with an obviously disturbed suspect armed with a knife who was refusing to obey lawful orders, a hysterical woman out front who wouldn't stay out of the way and may have become a secondary threat, and no positive assurance that the rest of the house wasn't occupied by more people who could have been a threat. In this scenario, use of a taser could have been the fastest way to add another officer to odmp.org.

  • So what would you have done after repeatedly warning some one who is holding two deadly weapons and approaching you to back off and put the weapons down? There are 4 possibilities to this: 1. Tase

  • Justified. If you are pulling a weapon against a police officer, you better be ready to face the consequences of your actions.

To be honest that Cop had guts, if I was the Cop I would of probably backed out of the building and waited for backup, the fact that the guy made him jump (he was literally right around the corner waiting like something out of a horror film) yet he still maintained his cool, called out several warnings before finally actng in self defence says a lot for him and his training.

I personally think that he was just not thinking at the time and shot without thinking.

Allow me to pull the holes out of your opinion.  First off he gave him about 9 warnings to drop the knife or he would shoot. He told him to stop, he told me to stay where he was. The man started to charge the officer what are you doing to do? Turn your back and run? Taser him and risk the taser failing? (Honestly tasers fail 1/3 times) pepper spray him? Well if someone is going to kill himself or another person a little pepper spray won't do anything. He had no other choice turning your back would be a death trap and the only real thing to do is to use legal force. Cops shoot to stop the threat shooting the man 5 times is what it took to stop the threat. No he couldn't of just shot him in the leg or shot the knife out of his hand it doesn't work like that.

If you would of backed out of the building you could be help responsible if the man ended up cutting/killing him self because you failed to do your job as a peace officer.

Absolutely not. He was well within justified use of deadly force. He gave multiple warning's to the perpetrator and a officer has 'no duty to retreat' from a threat. He did the correct thing whether anyone believe's he did or not. Considering i have been around LE 'law enforcement' my entire life i agree with this officer and his justified use of deadly force.

I think the officer did the right thing. The outcome could not have been better for someone that is suicidal like him. There are many scenarios like people here posted and there are more lives to protect besides the officer's.

And that's why Im not a Police Officer and that guy is.

Well i feel the Cop had the right to Protect himself but was little Trigger happy. I mean i feel the cop could have handle it little better for example... If he had a tazer that would be the best weapon to use in this Event But if he didnt have a taser maybe he should have did this instead.

1: After addressing hes a police officer . Try to Speak to the suspect Calmly not demanding. Since he was in a state of Hurting himself.

2: Once you have the person Come out to your View Aim your weapon at is leg or Arm. i would say The leg Cause its clearly a easy shot.

3: Try to speak to him and get him to lower the weapon Calmly. State to the suspect your here to help and maybe even Pep talk  him about life.

4: if the suspect Tries and Fail to listen or comply to your orders then Shoot his legs with 1 or 2 bullets. That suspect would be down and Alive.......

4 Plan B : IF 4 Fails and starts to run at you! Well Time to get LCPDFR Gundum Style on him! But yea sadly the cop just went LCPDFR Gundum Style.))

Overall the cop did was right but believe he could have handle it more better. and could have Prevented taking a life.. That if he isn;t Dead.

"Chances always have a limit.  The question is when will your limit be up?" ((L.R GTa crew quote))

1. He kind of did. He told him to come out calmly etc.

2. Already stated somewhere in the thread before, police isn't trained to aim to hurt most of the time. Leg may not work as well as you think.

3. See 1.

4. See 2.

That's my opinion though.

Invenio, Investigatio, Imperium

Officer did his job by the book. The officer engaged the individual and repetitively told the suspect to drop the knife, which he did not proceed to. Also, the suspect started walking toward the officer in a manner that could of been dangerous to the officer's safety. The shooting was justified.

Stuff happens. Police Officer did what he had to do. Now he could have use a taser, or shot him in the leg. Shooting him up like that wasn't really all that necessary, but it is what it is.

Just think a second guys, This cop has a guy with a knife in front of him and the cop has the gun aiming at the guy, The cop cant just holster the gun and get his taser and leave himself open to the guy with the knife.

Not sure how Police officers work, but if the officer knew that he had a knife, he could have had the taser ready. I'd also expect Police officers to have quick enough reflexes to be able to swap out a gun for a taser. I guess not. Maybe I'm wrong. If I am, please correct me so I don't walk around and be wrong.

The concern isn't swapping the gun for the taser. The concern is that if the taser doesn't work, the officer doesn't have time to drop the taser, unholster the pistol, and fire. As a general rule, less-lethal weaponry is more likely to be used if a backup officer is present to supply *lethal* force if it turns out to be needed; with no backup, a cop has to be much more careful.

Also, I don't think police habitually train rapidly holstering a firearm, since there are few circumstances where it's needed. You're much more likely to need to draw a gun quickly than put it away, especially if you're a uniformed officer who doesn't have to worry about being confused with a criminal.
