So you have like 50 police cars and everything from the FBI to the MPD to the secret service involved and they can't even get her alive?  Crazy.

That is indeed crazy. I mean, they didn't even know whether she was armed...

A vehicle that weighs several thousand pounds coming at someone is considered a weapon, which leads to authorization to fire. However, what angers me about this is that they were close enough to see the child in the back seat but fired as the car was driving away, putting the innocent child in danger. The least they could have done was taken a shot from the side to minimize the risk of the child being hit.

scum bag cops....i hope they burn in hell...first dorner now this? unbelievable

What exactly does Dorner have to do with this? Completely separate incidents, though I believe yesterday's was handled much better.

Sticks and stones may break bones, but 5.56 fragments on impact.

because both were murdered...neither of them had a trial which everyone has a right to thats how our country works...or it use too...this is what the ndaa looks like

I agree that Dorner was murdered. However, circumstances are entirely different here. Dorner was holed up inside a structure and hadn't taken a shot in several hours, when the police came on the radio discussing plans to burn the cabin down, and there just happened to be an "accidental" fire caused by a non-lethal explosive.

This lady was attempting to run through barriers to some of the most heavily guarded buildings on the planet, and still posed an active threat at the time of her death because she was in control of a vehicle that had struck an officer before, and, given the circumstances of trying to get close to US government buildings by running through barriers, there is grounds for the belief that it might have been a car bomb.

EDIT: Also, the NDAA doesn't look at all like this. This means that Obama would've had to get a briefing on what was going on, call the military, tell them the name of the woman who they had not checked the ID of yet and have them respond to this. While I see a bunch of over militarized cops (I know it's a different discussion), the military wasn't involved. And before anyone gets any wrong ideas, I firmly believe the NDAA is one of the strongest acts of treason in this country.

Nope. If you pose an imminent threat to a life, you may be legally stopped by any means necessary, including lethal force if it is the only option. The problem with trials is that they don't stop the crime; if police let you kill someone and then arrest you, the person you killed is still dead. The general rule of thumb is that if it comes down to the life of an aggressor versus the life of a victim, the aggressor should be stopped even if they die in the process. If you've ever wondered why police carry guns in the first place, that's pretty much the reason: so they can defend themselves and others from assailants.

@Sam: I assume part of the reason they were worried was a bomb risk. Keep in mind that that's exactly WHY those concrete barriers she hit are there: to stop car bombs from getting near the building. Something like this definitely could look like an attempted bombing.

@c13: Right, these cops actually hit their target and had the right target, unlike in the Dorner case.

It's America Sam, It's America...

At the risk of attracting unwanted attention, that's a very douche bag type of thing to say. That's our country's capital, and it's where the president lives. We live under constant threat of terrorist attacks, and I'm sure if I was there as a police officer, I'd be damned if I'd let another attack on civilians or god forbid our president happen. That threat needed to end immediately, and if you bother to watch the video, the police had very good restraint. Take your preconceived notions of my country, and get the hell out of this thread. And stay out. If you want to be a bigot, then go do it some place else.

One of the moderators better lock this thread before this gets any further out of hand.

I'll start by saying I understand how you'd feel about this. I have a parent who works on Capitol Hill; I actually had to wait for a text message confirming they were OK. I'd agree DC is a sort of special case, security-wise. I'd agree that saying "It's America..." seems to imply that this is a crazy overreaction that wouldn't happen elsewhere.

That said: Statements like that, while you may not like them, don't break the rules. Members who feel that this was an overuse of force can post and say as much. What you feel is a preconceived notion isn't abusive, nor is it discriminatory. He's not saying "all Americans are X". He's generalizing about the government, and I'm pretty sure the government can take preconceived notions of criticism.

The fact that someone doesn't think that protecting the president justifies a severe police response doesn't mean we lock the thread. Unless rules violations happen or we need to prevent a flamewar, we won't lock the thread. If you feel incapable of participating without flaming, then feel free to not participate; we'd love if everyone was self-aware enough to know when they can't avoid flaming.

Every action has an equal but opposite reaction, so I'm expecting a retort which would start a flamewar, but maybe I'll be proven wrong. If that's the case, then I'd be happy to see the show go on. I created this topic myself to share the news and discuss the ramifications. But I don't want this getting personal. And it's bordering pretty damned close. I'm sure you'll keep an eye out.

You people who call America "Murica" really piss me off, its America not Murica.

I guess you've never watched Team America and don't get the joke then.

Also just for the record I didn't call it "murica" I called it "'murica" that little ' before the m means I've purposely skipped the letter A.

They shot her in self defense! She tried to mow them down in her car so for their safety they shot her!!! If you had a gun and someone was trying to run you over, what would you do?  Let them?  If you shot the person trying to run YOU over with their car, would that make you a scum bag!?  You're an idiot if you truly believe the cops did ANYTHING wrong in this situation!  The woman had her GD BABY in the car with her trying to kill another human being....she got exactly what she deserved....bottom line!
