Goodbye Microsoft

No, they care. The XBOX likely brings them far more revenue than Windows licensing does. Probably more than all of their other services combined if you didn't count corporate offices buying Microsoft Office software into it. Microsoft gets a little kickback from each OS sold, but for the XBOX they get kickback for every console, every game, every controller, every cable, every pre-order. And things like warranties and LIVE subscriptions are pure profit. If the XBOX had never been invented, Microsoft would likely be out of business, or on the ropes financially speaking at the very least since Vista and Windows 8 were both very poorly received along with the last few Office suites. The Zune was a failure, the Surface isn't gaining much traction, and their Phone OS isn't growing by leaps and bounds right now. Microsoft is trying to do too many things at once, so instead of doing a couple of things extremely well (Like a Windows OS and a gaming console), they're doing everything mediocre. Mediocre doesn't cut it when you're up against cut throat competition like Apple, Google, Samsung and Sony.

I hate to jump on the hate train with everyone when it comes to the XBOX One's new policies, but there are too many negatives to buying one vs. a PS4. I'm just wondering if I should get one upon release or wait a few months. Pre-orders and availability will be limited I'm sure.

I wouldn't buy any of the new consoles straight at release. Most games will still come out for the old generation for a while (Destiny for example) and with waiting a few months you'll be able to view all the pros and cons of both consoles in action. I agree that right now the PS seems to own the Xbox, but they are not even out for half a year, so a lot of things can still happen.

Especially because I really, really can't imagine Microsoft just sitting around until release after they've received so much criticism. However, if you read some of the E3 interviews with the MS guys basically saying "customers will see that we've got a top product when it's in stores" it appears they're doing just that. Weird.

When asked what players should do if they don't have an internet connection, Microsoft responded:

"Honestly, they should stick to the 360. Don't bother getting an Xbox One"

Nice to see they are catering for all their customers, thats the final nail in the coffin for me, time to see if my old friend Sony will take me back after years of neglecting them.

Well, actually, Micro$oft just started giving away free games to gold subscribers (too little too late maybe??). They gave away Fable 3 and next month Halo 3 and  Assassins Creed 2. http://www.theverge.com/2013/6/10/4413668/xbox-live-gold-free-games-promotion-e3-2013

Xbox one will also have cloud saves (which is already currently on the xbox 360)

They backtracked from the used game thing saying that it will be left up to the publisher NOT the 'x-bone' (peer pressure works every time)

So the last major hurdle would be the connectivity thing (we have a LONG time until release so they could back peddle that one too).

Honestly, I don't understand all the displays of hate towards one or the other. Simply stay informed and speak with your wallet. Unless you are crying to the manufacturer of the product in question to get them to change things for the better, is there really a point in crying at all???

Edit: Oh and X-live Gold is $40 not $60

All the additional features aren't really that relevant to people outside the US, netflix is either unavailable or severely limited in the countries that do have it.

I don't care about live TV capabilities as my Xbox 360 is connected to my TV, why view it via the xbox when I can use the TV and save on my electricity bill?

I don't care about used games, never bought one, haven't been to a physical games shop in years now because it's cheaper to buy it online with free delivery the next day.

By far my biggest issue is that Microsoft seems to not care for their customers, I can't believe their arrogance when they said that people could just buy a 360 instead.

However, I am very cautious about Sony, their big PSN outage where millions of credit card info was hacked a couple of years ago combined with their SOPA  support makes me see them as just about the same level of credibility as Microsoft when it comes to customer care and interest.

I haven't seen any games for the two consoles that are a "must have" for me, I certainly haven't seen anything that entices me for a pre-order/launch day purchase.

I'll stick with PC, it has the games I want to play (bar GTA:V), I already have the hardware needed to run new releases without them looking like something my bottom produced in a toilet bowl.

True. You can buy games on steam way cheaper but you have to download them. There are sales every week and during summer the "Summer sale" starts I bought GTA IV complete pack for $7.99 in stead of $30. Sorry for the steam stuff. lol.

My family (Now I'm gunna sound like one of those old guys who claims something has been in the family for a hundred of donkey years) has been using PS since the Play Station back in the good old days.

My brother owned the PS1, and I regularly played it in my kidy years - GTA introductions.

Then he owned a PS2 and I enjoyed everything about it, I then got a PS2 later for Christmas with the GTA's.

After waiting about 4 years after the release of PS3 I got one for Christmas, yeah I loved it, I'm now a PSN user, it's worth it. aprox £200+ worth of proper PS3 games for £40 a year - Bargain!

Now, when the PS4 comes out, I'm getting it!

So yeah, the Play Station runs in my family :P

P.S Xbox One is a big failure imo. - Xbox is going to crash and burn :P

For the console maybe, not for Microsoft. Again, they have money to play with.

As we know, XboxOne is a cheap PC with TV networks and PRISM integrated.

And we have cool pictures of it :D http://imgur.com/a/NbGau

Every XBOX has been a PC. That's how the original one was built. It was assembled using parts picked up from a local custom PC shop. The famous 360 is a triple core PowerPC Xenon (often a broken quad core with one core disabled to make it stable) 512MB of RAM and an ATI (AMD) graphics card.  Technically the Playstation 3 and the Wii are PC's too. They just render games differently and the PS3 has a different type of CPU architecture. The thing that makes gaming consoles what they are is flat pricing, low or no maintenance and standardized hardware for a unified experience among all gamers. It takes away individuality from your computer but it gives everyone a level playing field and parents feel more comfortable knowing what they have to spend on their kid. They buy a box, leave it alone for 5-7 years and just buy the kid games and controllers when they break until a new console comes out. PC's are much higher cost, but I for one feel that they're more rewarding and far more flexible. But most parents care about "price" (which is different than "cost" aka the bottom line) and see $500 over 5-7 years vs. $1000 every 3-4 years if you want to keep your graphics settings maxed out on all games. All I can say is thank god I'm an adult and I can spend my money how I like.

Errh, yeah I know, thanks...?

The point of the pics is : they don't show the games on true X1 but on W7 PCs so what press saw at E3 is biased. But we already knew that, it's just that we have concrete images of it now.

I'm pretty sure the original Xbox (which *should* be the xbox 1, if Microsoft hadn't picked an awful name for the xbox 3) literally ran on x86 hardware. Not sure if the new one does, but if it did, it could run Windows 7 without modification.

Also: Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Xbox and Windows use very, very similar APIs? (IIRC, the "X" in XBox comes from DirectX) So showing off an Xbox using a Windows computer isn't necessarily a stretch. It's not like Sony using a Windows computer - seeing as Microsoft makes both Windows and XBox, I wouldn't be surprised if they are similar operating systems, with a similar core (like the relationship between OS X and iOS).

No, they care. The XBOX likely brings them far more revenue than Windows licensing does. Probably more than all of their other services combined if you didn't count corporate offices buying Microsoft Office software into it.

I would be *shocked* if this is true. Microsoft licenses Windows and Office directly to businesses. Unlike Xbox, software licenses are pure profit. It costs literally nothing for Microsoft to sell a Windows license to a business - there aren't even costs associated with making a disk, because the business doesn't need another disk with each install (all they need is a license key). In addition, companies pay for support, people buy MSDN and TechNet subscriptions, etc.

On the other hand, speculation is pointless. You see, as a publicly traded company, Microsoft actually has to release documents detailing its financial status. In 2012, the Entertainment and Devices Division had around $9.5bn in revenue, for around $364 million in profit. Now, in 2011, they had around $9bn in revenue for $1.5bn in profit, so 2012 might have been an aberration.

Those numbers are far less than most other divisions in Microsoft. Business division? Around $23bn in revenue, $15bn profit. Server and Tools? $17bn revenue, $7bn profit. Windows and Windows Live? $19bn revenue, $12bn profit. The only division making *less* than Entertainment and Devices is Online Services.

Don't act like Xbox is critical to Microsoft's success as a company. They are way bigger than their gaming division, and they can take the hit of a failed console. Office and Windows are total cash cows.

I agree, but we have to keep in mind that each OS is (or should be lol) optimized for his functions, for different services, for a different way of multitasking, for resources consumption, etc...

So, we can't even consider that what we saw at E3 were "debug consoles" or "dev consoles", but only games dev' kits running on "true" W7 PCs.

And reporters couldn't tell if consoles were overheating and were noisy because there was no consoles, or the rare only true debug consoles were hidden in big boxes.

It's the problem of E3, it's just a marketing event, smoke and mirrors.
