Southland Last Night...

Featured Replies

Did anyone watch Southland last night, the "Off Duty" Episode? That might be one of the greatest hours of television I have watched, probably the best episode of the series. It's a must watch! What did you all think?

Yep, watched it.   It was amazing, the new one 'Chaos' was the best i have EVER seen, but seeing the cop get shot was a surprise.

Oh God.. did you seriously just use a hastag outside of twitter? :wallbash:

On topic though, I did and it was brilliant as always, although I wouldn't say it was the best one.

I'd say episode two. It had some epic action packed into its runtime;

  • Conflict between Sammy and Sherman
  • The little kid was shot
  • Lydia's mum suddenly died

Closely behind it though was the one where Sammy and Ben charged into the LAPD-owned building after that gunman who opened fire once more once more officers were on scene and Ben struggled to draw his gun and shout "GUN!"

I really feel like they're progressing the story a lot in this season, they're setting up a major story development in the later stages of the season, it'll be interesting to see what happens to Cooper, I feel that there's a lot of hints towards some change with him.

I also think that they're pushing Sammy's character, it's almost as if they want him to crack and burn with the custody battle and the related issues, Sherman does seem to be more at peace with being a cop than in previous seasons..

It's hard to say that it's the best hour of television, it's actually pretty hard for me to identify one TV episode as being the "best ever", it depends on the genre and the actual tv series as a whole.

I don't think anything can beat the end of FRIENDS, that really was the end of a tv era.

The episodes they have been releasing this season are really intense compared to the other 3 or 4.  However, I don't favor them as much now because they're growing unrealistic, that is my only concern.  It is definitely getting a lot more personal but that is good for the story's development.  Enjoy it while you can because they always take a full year to release the next season.

THIS.

but seriously, I really enjoyed the episode. My only hope is that Coopers addiction doesn't come back with his back being re-injured.

I also liked the dynamic of how up until now, it seemedthat Dewy (SP) and Coop seemed to disagree a lot, but now they are actually close.

Can't wait till next episode!

Well cooper did pass down Vicodin. They are certainly hinting a lot of stuff so far.

Dewey has always been a likeable arsehole, he's the sort of bloke you'd want down at the pub, he can be quite crap as a cop, I expected a different story to come from the pursuit, I thought he'd beat up the perp, the perp would claim abuse, they'd dig up the radio transmission that day and hey presto, Dewey is gone.

Southland is one of the few shows that manages to keep it "real", sure they overdo the excitement of the job, but the details are spot on.

They really shouldn't hire child actors though, that bag scene was cringe-worthy.

It just felt.... forced to me, especially his delivery of the lines really stood out compared to what we're used to seeing.

I know what you mean. Kids in TV/Movies have a way of doing that.

I just saw it today, it was one of the better episodes, I must say.

The part where John saw Dewey in the hospital was funny, you know, the sexual references Dewey made? That had me laughing, but John was quite pissed, since he was making fun of gay people in a way (John is a homosexual himself). But he definitely doesn't act like it, or look like it.

The cars aren't equipped with a siren, they don't use them if they are.  The sirens aren't real, they are added in editing.

The show has a few inaccuracies when it comes to the cars,, I have only noticed one CVPI with the right lightbar(FederalSignal Arjent) (last weeks episode, parked in the police car park), they also have 2011 Chargers, the LAPD does not have any marked 2011 Chargers. The cars are also missing wig/wags afaik, I also have not noticed a warning equipment control pad anywhere inside the cars.

End of Watch on the other hand had everything as accurate as they could get, they used the correct lightbars and the correct sirens on the vehicles. Major plus in my book.

It sucks to live in Australia:( I have to watch season 4 and onwards online cause It only on TV once in a while... And when it is it's just goes from season 1-3:(

Do they use the non-realistic vehicles because its easier just to stick with the current fleet they have for the show or because it would cost more to use LAPD vehicles?

I also noticed that the vehicles at the end

when they were digging up the bodies

were the same as the shows LAPD cruisers just with a different decal/design/skin.

There using chargers because dodge is probably giving them a special deal, if you notice during the show, they give alot better profile shots of the chargers than they do of the CVPIs. Pretty simple marketing because they know their demographic is males 25-40 years of age and most likely with a starting family/young family which will appeal to them when they are looking for a new family vehicle, room for the family, yet still a pretty bad ass looking car with performance to boot.
