Police Explorer Program

Featured Replies

Hello. To those of you reading this, and have participated in your local Police Explorer Program, I was wondering how it is like. I just don't wanna go in there and be like the youngest one there (Age requirement is 14, and I'm 14 :P) and also, how is the program overall in your opinion. The meeting starts at 7 CST tonight and 2 weeks from now, idk if I'll be able to make this one though, thanks ahead of time....

  • Yes it did, I scored within the top 5 of my academy class somewhat due to being exposed to L.E. early through this program. I learned street knowledge through ride-a-longs as that's where you learn to

  • Hmm... Me too, but to Canada hopefully.

Judging by your profile picture, your probably Canadian? Ontario? Peel Regional Police? my advice, do what the Senior LEO say's, though i'm waiting to go on one with Halifax Regional Police, i've been waiting almost a month and a half and go figure, the guy that handles the ride along's, live down the street from me lol anyway, i think ride along's are perfect for kid's if they think they want a Career in Law Enforcement, HRP has a Youth Program hosted every year for kid's your age to 19, helluva program from what i've heard (i'm too old for it now) you even get a uniform.

When I was in it, it was fuking awesome! Got to go on ride alongs got to learn all this cool stuff about cops. Few times we got to help out with police training. Err what else got to use the speed gun it just help so much. If you want to be a cop this is the program for you. In college I get good grades on everything because I learned all of this in police cadets. Very help ful program. I know a few department will actually hire straight from the program when the cadet finish's college.

But remember this was in Wisconsin USA

Haha, I wish. But for the time now, no, I am from America. Though when the time comes, I wish to move to CA :P.

I'm moving to America.

Apparently in Ahling's country, it's MANDATORY you serve 1 or 2 year's as either a Police Officer or the military, or something like that.

@Harper- Don't feel bad, for those who wish to do an RCMP ride along will 100% be turned down because they don't do them, you have to be in the "Hiring Process" as a potential employee, i would love to be an American Police Officer, it's so mainstream on that side of the border, and you don't have to go to the other end of the country to train like the RCMP..

I went through the Police Explorer program in my city, I was the same way you are, a tad like "Wtf do we even do?" the description for most Police Explorer programs are "A program to give insight into the Law Enforcement world", which it mostly does in my opinion, but I feel it's more a volunteer/your actually going to do something in law enforcement program, it's good for common ride alongs (You may get to wear your uniform, which after me being on around 11+ride alongs, helps so you don't look like some random tag along with the officer), and volunteer work that help your community, I have no idea what your program may do, but the activity's ours include is the following: Ride Alongs, Volunteer work, Participating in a S.W.A.T Explorer Competition, Directing traffic at events etc.., you get your own uniform and go to meetings to discuss various things, for your age, I say do it! If your planning on becoming a Police Officer nothing looks better in front of the Oral Board then seeing "Joined explores at the age of 14", plus you'll get a greater insight into the law enforcement world, without looking like some random dude invading the PD's privacy, it's a good learning experience, so don't fret, and just have fun!

Side Note: I wouldn't worry about your age, in fact I'd be proud of that fact that at your age, your taking charge in what you want to do for a living and that you actually want to pursue a career within Law Enforcement.

Above all, take the program seriously. Most explorer posts are run paramilitary-style from what I gather. I joined my local post, which was on a small municipal pd. We had very few members, so it wasn't paramilitary, but we still had meetings and did ride alongs. I highly recommend the program, even just doing the ride alongs are worth it. I have since gone off to college, and the local pd here only allows one ride along for good. I was pretty bummed to hear that. If you are truly interested in law enforcement, ride alongs are a great oppurtunity. Explorer posts are even better oppurtunities. I say go for it!

Really? Down here I know some guys who have been on ride-alongs with the RCMP and weren't in the recruitment or training process. Must be just your area?

Wish NJ would allow this but that will never happen for as long as i live.

Pretty sure NJ or some town by it has one, before I left the cadet program we had a kid join that was a former cadet from NJ..

Well, after doing some research no towns really close to me do it. Some of the towns further away are like some major city's in Nj. Most of them are deep in the ghetto. I would find that cool to explore that type of atmosphere.

Yeah, moving in my fucking garage. :D

On Topic, I have a few friends from my local City, County Police, and County Sheriff agencies. I'm pretty sure that they'd take me on a ridealong if I requested, which I may do now that I think about it.

Haha. That's insightful. I woulda tried to do it in FD (Kinda interested in EMS) but they have no explorer program, I would have to travel even further for a nearby city's. I haven't decided totally what to do with my life. But I believe it's gonna be in the public sector so, as the guy on the travel agency commercials says, We'll see where the waves take me :P.

Yeah, Another thing I'm kinda worried about. I'm not in the best of shape, obviously sense I spend time here :P jk. My city is about 50k people, idk how many are in the explorer program though.

Ah.... That's my country.... lol.... It's what my country's government calls 'NATIONAL SERVICE'..... It's either, the Armed forces, Police or the Fire brigade( we call it Civil Defence force) In about another 3 years time it's gonna be my turn..... My brother is serving his now. We serve a mandatory 2 years and a mandatory 10 years of reservist in which we have to go back to our respective units from time to time for some training..... We are never off the hook of the government here lol.
