It's hardly a joke. The first couple of skins you make take forever and most of the time look awful, but because of the sheer amount of time and effort put in to making them you feel accomplished anyway. I put hours and hours into my first skins and they looked dreadful. Only now, after months of practice, can I make top notch textures in 40 minutes or less.

Update on this. Here in Australia, it's illegal to hang anything off the rear view mirror as it's a distraction to the driver. I'm assuming that's not the case over in the States? -

Depends on what parts you use, some authors require the model to be locked before it can be uploaded.

The "-availablevidmem 30.0" line, which should probably just be "3.0", not "30.0" since I don't think any graphics card actually has that amount of memory.
