Also, they really should never need to be towed. Cop cars always fail at precisely the moment they are no longer needed. Source: The Blues Brothers

CES 2013 Futuristic Police Car
Are cop cars faster? I'm pretty sure they don't have governors, but I'd heard that Police Package was more about relibility. Police kind of have to "run the shit out of" their cars. That's just a consequence of them doing their jobs; the only way to stop it would be to increase foot patrol, or to provide take-homes (this is actually one of the biggest justifications for take-homes: it's the only way to get cops to care about their cars). CVPIs are so great precisely because they can be driven like that; body-on-frame is very fast and cheap to repair minor damage. About the tire: Maybe they could be using some kind of run-flat that can't be removed on the street? More likely, maybe they don't care about wasting money (it does seem ridiculous to tow a cop car instead of giving it a spare tire). What kind of car was it? If it was an Impala or something, the trunk might not have room for a spare in addition to police equipment (cop cars have a LOT of police equipment; while CVPIs have plenty of space, other cars may not).

CES 2013 Futuristic Police Car
It depends. Police get a LOT of use out of their vehicles (if they're fleet cars) - cars running pretty much 24/7 aren't uncommon. Reliability and easy maintenance are really important. Also, demo cars are different; they tend to have one of everything (being, you know, demos). Look at a demo lighting car, then look at a real cop car. Actual agencies normally pick and choose.

2013 Police Interceptor
NYPD has no choice but to replace their CVPIs eventually. You can't make a car run forever, especially when it's treated like shared patrol cars are treated.

2013 Police Interceptor
Yeah. I didn't like the looks of the car when I first saw it, but seeing it in service has changed my mind. It looks really nice with a Secret Service paintjob.

Semiautomatic rifles?
Is there a way to make the M4 semi-automatic, like real rifles tend to be? I tried increasing the weapon time between shots in WeaponInfo.xml, but it had no effect.

LCPD Traffic Officer
You can use Braveheart's mod to stop cars, but it's not perfect. These scenes are generally made with a trainer.

Real life NYPD Shooting a Dog Trying to Protect Her Owner
Unless you have medical training, you can actually make the situation worse by trying to help. Police officers may have such training(then again, they may not), but most bystanders don't. Generally, the thing to do is to call the EMTs, especially in a place like New York (where they respond pretty quickly).

Real life NYPD Shooting a Dog Trying to Protect Her Owner
@Bollocks: I've said this at least once before: If c13 is defending a cop, the cop was almost certainly justified. c13 is one of the first people on these forums to call out a cop for doing something bad. Also, I don't see where wild animals have it better than domesticated animals. It is legal to hunt wild animals, so they are facing endangerment and extinction. Domesticated animals are not. I love dogs; I have 2. Even so, a dog has nowhere near the same rights as a human. That is as it should be. Species matters. If it comes down to "shoot a dog" vs. "risk a human life", the correct answer is "shoot the dog".

What Cars Would You Like To See Patrolling Near You?
Meaning, more than zero Altimas? I'm lucky in terms of police car variety, because there are a ridiculous number of uniformed police agencies where I live (a consequence of living at the border of 2 states and DC, and the many federal police agencies in DC), and my county PD likes trying lots of kinds of cars (I've personally seen a '12 Charger, a Taurus, and a Caprice in service). That said, I haven't yet seen a new Explorer. I really really want to see them.

Just don't say you're summing up everyone's opinion, then. Not everyone agrees. That's what I was saying.
-
Real life NYPD Shooting a Dog Trying to Protect Her Owner
No, that doesn't sum up everyone's opinions; I, for one, strongly disagree. I don't see how you can reconcile these two things. You should use the amount of force that leads to the safest result; any more is too much, but any less is too little. I can see saying "less force would have been nice", but to say that you shouldn't make the safest decision is irresponsible.

No, it's not excessive force. Excessive force is when the force used is unreasonable; that wasn't the case here, and the force was completely justified. Again, it doesn't matter what the dog thought. It's not a person. You don't have to minimize force to the same degree, because "killing a person to save a person" is MUCH more questionable than "killing an animal to save a person". There's little that's *less* relevant to the acceptable level of force. If the dog is threatening a person, it's justified to shoot it. Period. No matter what the dog thinks. That's part of the whole "human > animal" thing.

Real life NYPD Shooting a Dog Trying to Protect Her Owner
It looked to me like the officer on the left may have had a Taser, but it's unclear. Anyway, NYPD officers in general have less equipment than many other departments (for example, patrol officers aren't issued shotguns), so I wouldn't be surprised if they don't issue Tasers. Keep in mind that they need to train 40,000 officers in whatever equipment they issue.

@AntEyeVirus: If LMS is talking about the IRC channel I suspect he is, the guy who made that video is the person who *runs* that channel.

...or you could tell us, and not make us look it up?

Real life NYPD Shooting a Dog Trying to Protect Her Owner
1. This dog was less likely to run off, because it thought it was protecting something. 2. In your video, the cop the dog ran at drew his gun. The other cop tased the dog. In the NYPD video, the cop who was attacked fired immediately. 3. It doesn't matter what the dog wanted. The cop would rather not take the risk of a bite. There's no question that it was *legal* for the cop to shoot the dog; when an animal threatens to hurt a person, it is generally legal to kill it. Animals don't really have the same right to life that people do. 4. Of course bullets cause more damage than tasers. If the NYPD issued a gun that caused less damage than tasers, that would be a problem. What's your point?
