  1. Jay said it best. Stop talking about the mods. Stop contacting police departments. Just make your art and upload it if you want to share it. Worry about takedown notices once you get them. You're asking for trouble if you go around soliciting these things, I tried to make that clear in the last thread.
  2. A dog can run much faster than a human so pepper spray would likely be ineffective as the dog could latch on and bite before getting a god shot off. Pepper spray also effects the officer at close range, as you get some blowback in your own eyes. That's why you have to get sprayed if you go to the academy. A taser may also be ineffective since both prongs have to hit and pierce the skin.
  3. I'd agree, but at least it's playable. I can't use any modified vehicles or I get texture loss, no matter the settings.
  4. I don't think you'll cause more harm, so long as you've learned from this. As said before, what's done is done. Let's use this event as an example of what to stay away from in the future. LCPDFR itself, as a script would most likely be able to stay even if other P.D.'s started cracking down on skins and car manufacturers started cracking down on models. But those fancy car mods everyone's so fond of would cease to exist which unfortunately makes a big difference in gameplay for a lot of folks. As you said, we are a group. And although I admire you taking responsibility for yourself and your future, actions we (meaning any of us, not just you) perform here may effect others. And we all need to keep that in mind to keep everyone's hard work protected, including your own. I'd hate the thought of having to delete a skin I worked on for hours in Photoshop. That's all I wanted to point out to everyone.
  5. Remember tz71 that developers still have to work on porting the game over form console to console. It's not as if all they have to do is press new discs. Entry level programmers in the U.S. can start off around $60,000, veteran ones can make six figures if the company decides to keep them instead of hiring new college graduates all the time to keep costs down. Then you have to factory in things like the costs of packaging materials, distribution, advertising, etc. Porting over a game for a minority console (which we are in most multi-platform games, unfortunately) isn't as lucrative as you might think. I'm not saying it would be counter productive for Rockstar North, but it could take a long time for them to see the kind of money that they'd want out of it, if ever.
  6. Same here. I've had some unwanted attention from police for traffic violations like speeding, or a noise complaint call. If I applied to a department they'd show up on my record, and I'm sure they'd ask me about them. I even got my name mentioned in the papers for being involved in a car accident, which was not my proudest moment. Everything worked out in the end though and the po-po let me off in those cases. I've moved on since and chalk them up to lessons learned.
  7. If it's not a copyrighted image like you said, then how is it going behind their back, exactly? The scenario that likely would have taken place had you told nobody would be that nobody from that police department finds the image because it's in an obscure place on the internet tucked away in a .RAR file or something, and you and a couple of other fans of your PD use the cars for their own personal roleplay use and live happily ever after, so to speak. And by the way, why are you so proud of a police department that tears apart homeless peoples tents and beats up civilians? Some idols. Copyright infringement has nothing to do with being a hermit. This community is publicized to an extent, but nobody needs literal 'negative press' or trolls breathing down our back for police simulator roleplaying using a video game that's raised more than its fair share of moral objections. And even though you're being sarcastic with me; yes, it did take someone else to point them out to you. Namely the chief of police and your departments PR rep. You'll have to excuse my frustration because while the letter you got may only bother you, the repercussions from an incident like this bother me way more. Far beyond any personal consequences like letters or phone calls. I pointed out that you may have put this whole modification in jeopardy in a worst case scenario because I didn't think you understood the gravity of the situation, nor do a lot of people here for that matter. What's done is done and you can't undo the past. But I want people to be able to look at this thread and learn from it. I'd suggest that it be stickied at the top of the forum, but I don't want to cause you any further embarrassment. I began my first reply to with with the words "I don't want to necessarily offend you". And I meant that. And I still do mean it. I'm not here bury you for a mistake that landed you a name drop in a news article. But I'm here to try and make everybody understand that what some people do to their copies of GTA IV is already borderline dangerous as far as unwanted attention is concerned, even when you have to go digging for Ford Crown Victoria car models on an underground mod website. This pushed it over the edge and did indeed get you some unwanted attention that could lead to further problems down the road. I'm going to cross my fingers and hope that never happens. And on a personal note, I truly do hope it doesn't do any damage to your future career ambitions. Some police departments might take police roleplaying the wrong way, insomuch as that I wouldn't put it on my resume. Or the newspapers. As DrDetroit said earlier, the GJPD will certainly know who you are now. I hope everything works out for you in the end.
  8. Technically yes, since you're able to launch the game, and come here to tell us that it's really slow. But you don't meet the minimum requirements, and the picture you posted from a PC Minimum Requirements website tells you that. You can't get any more definitive of an answer than that. So if you continue to play the game, it's going to look, and play like dog vomit. Ditch the laptop and invest in a gaming desktop.
  9. I don't want to necessarily offend you by saying this, but I think you may have single-handedly managed to harm the reputation of the LCPDFR community among a group of police officers, perpetuate the negative reputation of Grand Theft Auto IV, and also discredit your work as a graphic designer (should you decide the pursue that career in the future) all because of a single Facebook post. I have no idea why you felt you needed to post that at all on their public Facebook page, rather than leaving your fandom of your police department among good company who play the mod with you. Bad move. Lets hope other police departments don't catch onto this and ruin it for the rest of us by issuing further takedown requests. You may have opened pandora's box. Let this serve as an example to the rest of you that there are are always risks you take when copying designs. And this is the most extreme repercussion. A cease and desist letter, and your name in the paper. I really hope a bigger paper or news network doesn't pick this story up.
  10. I can't speak for G17 Media, but most likely if GTA V comes out for PC, the developers here will likely try to reverse engineer the game to where they can make a sequel to LCPDFR. Everyone here likes to play the mod. Even the developers themselves. As for Rockstar, the ball's in their court. But I believe if we make our voices heard loudly enough, and there's enough of us, they'll take care of the fans.
  11. Sliders down for what?
  12. You read my mind. Also; nice avatar. Give me a liter of cola.
  13. The scenery is beautiful, but I can see why it has some crime. It seems a lot of the northern and mid-western areas of the US have a huge meth problem and some auto thefts, which honestly I think has a lot to due with the fact that there's not much to do in a lot of those areas. It's not well developed, and as dumb as it sounds, I firmly believe that has a lot to do with why that's the major drug up there. Even small towns near where I used to live in northern New England. There's f***-all to do there and a lot of those towns have some serious drug, alcohol an domestic violence issues.
  14. It's a loose but influential association. Remedy and Rockstar North were "good buddies" for many years during the development and release cycles of Max Payne 1 and 2. They've undboutedly traded plenty of management and staffing for their two Max Payne projects. That game is heavily based on the Max Payne game engine, and Rockstar North was most certainly originally the publisher in mind to release the game under, but they ultimately released it under Microsoft Game Studios, probably in part having to do with Rockstar having their hands full with their own in house game, Red Dead Redemption, which released a mere four days after Alan Wake. That being said, as was the case with their previous games, the various gaming platforms had different release dates for the game. With Max Payne 1 & 2, the PC version actually came earlier. And originally, Alan Wake was meant to premier on PC, and in fact many of their live tech demos were displayed on PC as well. Close to the end of the development cycle, they announced that they'd canceled the PC version, citing what I consider to be a couple of bogus reasons. If you ask me, they picked up bad habits due to both old and new influence from Rockstar North and Microsoft (among other juggernauts in the gaming industry) who have had either developers or publisher staffing who have spoken out against PC releases due to piracy or low sales or difficulty of porting or whatever other reason they want to choose. The PC version of Alan Wake was released nearly 2 years later, and I'm convinced that was not Remedy's original intent, especially seeing as one of their key employees said that PC gaming is "part of their roots". Also celticfang, Red Dead Redemption was not a new IP. It was a sequel to Red Dead Revolver on the Playstation 2.
  15. Nope, I watch a lot of COPS and there are a bunch of episodes from that area.
  16. It's a variant of the Touchmaster Delta, yes. There are a few versions available for GTA IV. It's the same one that the Seattle PD/Tacoma PD/Pierce Country Sheriff's Dept. uses.
  17. Monitors are tough. Brand, resolution, response time. I factor in those three things. I'm one of the few here who likes Windows 8. Most people who argue against using it don't really have anything to say that grabs attention other than they don't like the way it looks and they miss their little start button (which will be patched in sometime during July). Windows Visa, 7 and 8 are all based off the same kernel. Windows 8 is faster than the others and will support Direct X 11.1, and I have a problem with buying old products, so I'd recommend Windows 8.
  18. Try that: http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=gta+5+pc This issue's been beaten into the ground for the last couple of years. Also regarding Rockstar releases, Alan Wake and Red Dead Redemption. I shouldn't need to say any more than those two names. Rockstar does what they want, when they want.
  19. Setting vehicle paths or pedestrian paths like Harper said is workable for every major game I've spend modding time with. It's done every time you download a custom map for Team Fortress 2 or Counter Strike or whatever when you play against bots. If they have simple, predictable routes to an objective and you can camp there and slaughter them every time, it's because there may be only one or two paths they can choose from, and they may not have been that creative. That being said, even if the paths in GTA IV are something you can mod and can take time to be creative with, keep in mind that plenty of traffic lights or intersection stop signs in the game simply aren't obeyed in the vanilla version. This is especially true near the Dukes LCPD office, the intersection further down that leads to the short bridge to Bohan, and nearly every traffic light on the highway system. And this is just on the first island, never mind the others. It's because the traffic AI is very rudimentary, and likely can't be improved much, even with god-like scripting knowledge, simply because we don't have access to source code. If a script like this is made, it will likely bit hit or miss as to when it works. And if the script takes off like a rocket in popularity, I guarentee you people will be asking every 3 comments "can you fix it? can you fix it? can you fix it?". And the answer would simply be; no.
  20. He's a 12 year old boy or a 40 year old virgin because he's not into chicks with cankles, ugly mudder trucks or tasteless paint jobs on a mediocre muscle car? Right.
  21. FYI: $2500 isn't an unheard of amount for a "boutique" laptop. Protip 1: Don't buy a laptop Protip 2: If you're going to ignore Protip 1, then don't spend much more than a grand, because your laptop is going to need to be replaced after 2-3 years anyway if you want to stay current and keep your detail settings maxed out. So get something like an ASUS G7 series or something. They're reliable, powerful and well priced. You can usually find one with an i7 and a near-top end GPU for about $1000-1200.
  22. You're apparently under the impression that you can just MAKE a mod for any game and it doesn't take much time or effort. That's not the case.
  23. Not a bad idea for a script. I like it. Have you thought about implementing weather conditions too?
  24. unr3al replied to callum932's topic in Discussion
This is why there are so many First Responders. It's easy to pass the entrance exam to the LCPD. One question and you can't get it wrong.
  25. I'd look into an Intel Core i7 Ivy Bridge or Haswell CPU, 8GB of RAM, an nVidia GTX 760 or 770, a matching motherboard, 1000W power supply, an aftermarket CPU cooler, a 2TB 7,200/10,000RPM main HDD, pair it with another if you want, Windows 8 Pro and a monitor of your choice. You should be able to get underneath $2000 for everything. I'm not going to look any of that up, that's up to you. But I'd guess you'd end up somewhere around $1700 or $1800 with everything you need. Enjoy.
