Why did LAPD keep using mostly cars from a decade earlier in the 90s?

Featured Replies

I recently saw some COPS episodes from Season 7 covering LAPD. Those ones were from 1994-1995 timeline, and I expect LAPD to use the then-new whale Caprices, but the most part of their cars came out to be the same ones from the late 80s (box Caprices and LTD Crown Vics). Did they keep using those because of lack of funds? Or just because they valued the new ones later in the late 90s (along with the new Crown Vic P71)?

There is dashcam footage from an LAPD patrol Unit that was posted yesterday, and the Officer still  had a VHS recording system. The reason the LAPD is stuck with old vehicles, and equipment is because of the government in that State. LA' is run by democrats, who not only dislike law enforcement...-..but actively try to disarm them. Nobody in the State or Local government in that area would EVER consider supporting law enforcement, more a less updating their equipment. Half of LAPD officers do not have access to M4A1 rifles, and instead are still stuck with 12 gauges. Their windows are not bullet resistant and updated, their radios old and barely functional..-..Just like their cars. It sounds obserd, but the local govt. controls the budget for Law Enforcement. And they won't be helping the LAPD anytime soon.

At least I remember that LA Sheriff’s Dept. had the new Caprices. I think it’s a problem in the inner city of LA.

Indeed, the Inner City is the worst. You can actively watch people cheering on the suspect in foot persuits on the sidewalk. There are even some instances of bystanders attempting to trip law enforcement and obstruct them in any way. People there after shootings even pick up shell casings and toss them in a nearby gutter to just make LEO's jobs that much harder. There are very few upstanding and honest individuals in LA'. Most of them are probably Fire, EMS or LEO's.

LAPD keep vehicles for 10+ years. That's why.

They still have a 1998 CVPI in service, a 20-year-old car.

By this point, maybe it's only used as a spare unit, but still. 20 years is incredibly old for a police cruiser.

Up until about 2014, they still had 1997 Vic's (old body style) responding to calls and patrolling.

I saw videos of a retired LAPD officer on YouTube, his username is LMSTactical. According to what he stated, he was on the job from 1984 to 1996. And, as his videos showed, be a LAPD officer was a very challenging job in the 80s just like today, even though there weren’t race baiters back then.

What a load of horseshit. Democrats never supporting law enforcement. What fucking world do you live on? Do you know how expensive it is to outfit every unit with M4's? Shotguns will do just fine in urban areas. There's a hell of a lot of cops in LA. Cali is already in a lot of debt, it kinda makes it hard when communities have a bad outlook on cops, it makes it hard to raise taxes to help the officers.

Anyway, OriginalLight is correct. LAPD holds on to cars until they cannot physically run. They destroy cars with how hard they run them. As far as I'm aware, there's still some late '90s and early 2000s vehicles still in their fleet. They'll probably be one of the last departments to hold onto their Vics. They really dug the Vic platform, it makes it harder to get rid of them. From the LAPD standpoint, they still use the cars until they can't anymore, so they still had LTDs and boxy Caprice's when the North Hollywood shootout happened, and that was in '98 if I remember correctly. I've seen a few recent pics of early 2000s vics still being used by the LAPD. So they're definitely out there.

Pretty interesting to know. That’s why LAPD (like also LASD and CHP) still continues to use the Ford Crown Victoria in their fleet up today.

Anyway, the North Hollywood shootout happened in February 1997. That even changed the US police standpoint when it comes to weapons and tactics.

With LAPD being one of the largest police force in America, you would expect them to have Dodge Chargers, Chevy Suburbans, Ford Tauruses and Explorers as primaries in their fleet... with all of their officers equipped with Axon Flex bodycams on body, Axon Fleet dashcams in their cars, and even some decent level III outer body armors in their trunks...

I would definitely assume that they keep old cars instead of buying new ones due to fund cuts or something like that.

The #1 killer of Fleet cars in the US tend to be rust caused by anti-freeze salt on roads. That's why most departments in larger cities that don't snow still use older cars. Why not if they are fully serviceable and you have stockpiles of maintenance parts? That's why in So-Cal you still see tons of Crown Vics. But the Explorer is catching up.

I remember an episode of COPS set in LA (Season 7, Episode 32 - 1995) where at the end they used a 1986 Ford LTD Crown Victoria (which you can find only in a museum today).
