Did Normal US Police Officers have SMG

Recommended Posts

Hello Guys, i´ve got a Question about, the Normal US Cops Use SMG(like Heckler und Koch MP5/UMP or other SMGs)?, be cuz in the Past the Cops use the Thompson SMGs and Reising SMGs(I seen a Wayne Sheriff Deputy with this gun) and i´m not mean the SWAT. Sometimes they use Assault Rifle(only AR 15/M4 Rifles) and mostly Pistols and Shotguns. In my and other(even the UK) Countrys the Police Officers have SMG(HK MP5).

The Boston Airport Police used in the Year 2003  HK MP5 with Silencer:

The Wayne County Sheriff with a Reising SMG:

Can someone ask?

Speaking on my agency they use SMGs at the airport and some specialized units. But patrol officers carry the shotguns and the AR-15s.

Which SMG they use in Airport and why the Patrol Officers not use the SMG too?

As Lund explained, SMGs usually use 9m rounds. Most officers and departments would much rather use a rifle with a much bigger bullet with a stronger punch to it. However. If a department wanted something smaller, they'd most likely configure their M4/AR platform into Carbines, rather than a "long" rifle configuration.

Interesting... Some local units recently switched to submachine guns from full-size AK rifles due to being easy to handle in the cramped patrol vehicles. Subs are chambered with 9x18 rounds.

Airport security still uses 7,62 assault rifles though. better to pack more stopping power.

I don´t like this gun, but the Vityaz-SN looks better

Actually, because the bullet fired is smaller (just a much higher energy), rifles have less penetration through common building materials than commonly issued hollow point rounds for duty handguns and even some shotgun loads.

It's because of this that very few police in the US use Submachine Guns anymore. Other reasons include:

-Better penetration through body armor and glass (such as vehicle glass, I know of a shooting where MP5's couldn't penetrate a windshield that resulted in a dead hostage)

-Greater effective range

-Much easier to modify an AR-15/M4 with attachments such as grips, optics, flashlights and lasers

-HK refuses to service departments without an HK certified armorer, which is an expensive course to send an officer to for a niche firearm

Sticks and stones may break bones, but 5.56 fragments on impact.

I see people putting MP5 and UMP in the same bag, but I'd like to remind that the UMP can use 0.45 ACP ammo (like the infamous USP or P22X handgun series), on the contrary of the MP5 which is chambered exclusively for 9mm ammo. On a side note, I tend to believe the UMP is much more fitting and efficient for close-quarter combat than an actual rifle.

There are also 10mm and .40 cal versions of it.

Not to mention a lot of older HK rifles were based on that design, such as the 93, 94, and the all powerful HK51B:
