Limit daily upload count

Featured Replies

So, me and a few other creators out there seem to be having a reoccurring problem, is that whenever we post a file someone posts like 4 or 5 files like an hour later, putting outs significantly down on the home page, and reducing the amount of people seeing them. These are usually like 1 skin each, or 1 is a uniform, 1 is a livery, 1 is a different kind of livery. It is very annoying, im not saying they are doing this on purpose but it's incredibly annoying. I mean, what?

Why couldn't you put them all into a pack or something. Anyways I was thinking maybe you can limit the amount of daily posts to like 2 so it would reduce upload spam. It would only limit uploads though not like forum/gallery posts.

it make's sense but the skins are different departments so he can't release them in a pack.i think the home page should show latest models on top instead.

Still he could make a charger livery pack, or just release 2 a day, or they can prioritize the latest files or something

Spoiler

its something the webmasters should look into. maybe limit the number of shit that can uploaded that day

Exactly.  I understand it's frustrating to release your mod and have it bumped down, but they are also releasing legitimate files.  Limiting the upload is just going to hurt people in the long run and become annoying.  It's not he is releasing the same exact thing five times, or the same thing from the same pack.

So the solution would be for him to just make one huge Charger livery pack?  I hope you understand how confusing that would be down the road to have one massive pack with several different skins.  Most people - me included, don't want to look through one guy's pack for something we like.  We want to go into the mod knowing what we may get.

Two a day is still not going to solve it, especially with how many active users there are.

Well most people would release a variety pack, or they wouldn't make 6 different departments. It wont get annoying because it only happens like once a day or two, but for the people who happen to post like an hour before that its really annoying, and i couldn't see a reason why you would need to upload more than two times in a day besides doing what he did which is quite unnecessary in my opinion. Not trying to argue btw just saying.

Not arguing at all, just a friendly discussion about it.

My main point is just that some people are busy bees and enjoy making them.  If I knew how to make cars/textures/plugins, I'd honestly work on them non stop and probably spam with uploads as well.   If he's doing it maliciously, by all means, the staff can deal with it, but if it's a situation where he just has fun doing it and providing for the people, I wouldn't want to be the one that says "We've gotten some complains about how much you upload, please tone it down."

Don't get me wrong, I understand what you're saying, I just don't think limiting it to two uploads per day will help anyone.

I mean 2 isnt a set number, I just think it should be limited or the recent uploads could be doubled and the top section would be models the bottom section would be liveries and other

Maybe have a limit of time? Like you can only upload 2 files per 4 or so hours? At least that gives it time to spread out downloads, so other files can be seen.

And it also is a change that wouldn't affect normal users, but would affect those who are uploading lots of files at once.

A large multi-livery pack makes it harder to search for individual files within that pack. If I'm from Dearborn, Michigan and I want to see if anyone's made GTA mods for my local police, the file titled "Dearborn Police" is both easier to find and easier to recognize as what I want in a search results page. As for why you'd upload a bunch at once: as a modder yourself, I'm sure you know that it can be a bit annoying and tedious packaging a file for release. If you have a few projects going at once, you might do the final touches for all of them at the same time, and want to just get them uploaded right away. With the specific files you mentioned, the user could have saved them for a "Michigan megapack." But those packs have their own issues: the featured screenshot doesn't represent most of the vehicles, it's more annoying to figure out if it has the particular skin you wanted, and the download itself becomes much bigger.

I have a hunch that the "new files" list isn't the main way people are discovering mods, especially not ones like yours (based on your download count and rating, your mod will probably generate word-of-mouth).

To be fair, Nutt's textures exceed the quality by far of what you'd normally see in the gallery filebase and to use him as an example just isn't fair. Its perfectly reasonable to have multiple uploads of various textures since showing them all off in a single image without uploading externally is rather impractical. Where you do have a valid argument is if someone chooses to upload up to 5 or more images attempting to showcase every angle of a model.

If losing views due to that is your concern, then why not go create a thread for showcasing your mods instead? That's how we went about it in the good ol' days.

EDIT: Misread the part about it being the filebase. Regardless, the scenario is still pretty similar. I'm sure you get my point.

They're legitimate uploads and they don't really fit in a pack at all as they're all different departments/vehicles so putting them all in a pack wouldn't make sense.

I also do not believe it is up to anyone else to determine one's upload schedule, provided the uploads are legitimate/provide actual updates, of course. This is clearly the case here. If the person in question wishes to work on a few skins and release them all at once, there should be nobody stopping them from doing that.

An upload limit would be impractical for authors uploading multiple files as well as simply being unnecessary. I myself, for example, tend to release updates for all my files at once as they all affect each other in some way in most cases.

The 'new files' on the homepage is probably also one of the least effective ways that your file would get views. As mentioned, create a topic in the appropriate forum - this is much more effective than a few hours of 'fame' at the top of the new files section. Someone else uploading a genuinely legitimate file is also something you shouldn't be getting annoyed about in that sense - if it was a clear illegitimate attempt to get one's file to the top of the download page by adding a dot in their readme, then sure, but in this case they're adding legitimately new content.

And lastly, sorting files by sections is already easily possible via the navigation bar and is also the most widely used method of finding new files in my experience.

Your mods will get bumped down regardless of the fact if it is 1 or 5, eventually they will be bumped down, it happens. Like @Kane104 said, create a Showcase thread if you want people to see them.  Also, as CP said,  it is very hard to find the one texture you want if it is in a pack. It's much easier to just search "Indiana State Police" and find it rather then search through a pack.
