oldest police vehicle currently in service?

Featured Replies

I was talking to my cousin today (who is a CPD officer) and having recently bought a crown Victoria, he commended me on my choice, and said there aren't many left in the CPD. Which brought me to the question: what is the oldest police/fire vehicle you have seen in service recently?

I found this picture, taken in Oct. 2016. These cars were for police training, but never used. Here is the original article: http://hornet.fullcoll.edu/three-reminders-of-a-failed-fullerton-college-police-academy/

Not sure of the years of these cars, but the one on the right looks the oldest. Maybe 2002-ish? I don't really know the years of CVPI's very well, sorry. In person, the oldest I have seen is a newer CVPI. What's the oldest you have seen?

  • Was thinking the same thing!   Looks like this one is still in service in one of our distant towns! I hear that officers who tried one of those would choose that old US frame-based sedan ove

Since we've got a few Japanese police cars here, the R34 is still in service as of December 2016.

Oldest I've seen recently was a 1991-1992 Fire Marshal still in service. I didn't get a chance to snap a picture as he was going by me.   Oldest in police terms, LA Sheriff has loads of 1998

Oldest vehicles in use are probably in CA. LAPD typically keep some cars until they're 13 years of age... in 2013 they still had a 1997 in service.

No, the oldest vehicles are likely special-purpose vehicles (not cars), and there's a good chance they'd belong to a small specialist agency that has an easier time scrounging up maintenance money than replacing them outright.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if it were a boat or a plane instead of a land vehicle.

I think the OP is specifically referring to patrol cars, not helicopters, evidence vans, or boats.

My PD uses an evidence van from 1984, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's tons of old vehicles in service that aren't used for patrol.

Yeah, I was referring to patrol cars. The CPD has tons of squadrols from the 90's and 80's. Of course boats, planes, squadrols and vans will be in service for longer, as they don't patrol on a daily basis.

Oldest in police terms, LA Sheriff has loads of 1998, 1999, and 2000 CVPIs lined up at the courthouse. Next time I stop by, I'll snap a pic.

Unfortunately for Australia there are no older Police cars. with America they don't really care on mileage (especially in small departments) so having older cars would be no issue although here there is a strict rule if it goes over a certain mileage it has to be taken off patrol and sent away (they later auction it off). so the only vehicles in service are modern vehicles. The only old vehicle i have actually seen is a RBT/Police information bus. which rarely gets used so it might still be under the mileage.

If you want to me reply as soon as possible, then either quote or @CouthInk4  me as i'll be notified, a general reply will not notify me

So is that an US-only discussion?  hope not scince I am going to interuppt it now.

As far as I know, the oldest typ of vehicles that are still used might be those 2006 +/- X years Volkswagens (Note: Thats only my state and only referring to patrol vehicles), most cars have been replaced in the past years.

I saw an old 90s VW Bus like the one in the picture below a few days ago as an patrol car in Hamburg, still with the green-white livery and everything, I'm really surprised that they still use an old car like this, especially in an city like Hamburg.

In Spain you can still see few old Citroën Xsara Picasso, the first ones are from 1998. They are still used for minor task, not for patrolling

This is how the old ones looks, dont know what years is this from

I'll look for ours sometime but it's a 1998 CVPI I think, that's unmarked or atleast low profile meaning it's got light decals on it, and not top lightbar. High ranks only drive it unless you're doing something special like explorers and what not.

UPDATE: I just stopped by my local PD to see exactly what's in service. Here's what I found:

Oldest marked patrol car: 2013 Ford Explorer

Oldest unmarked patrol car: mid-2000s Crown Victoria

Oldest municipal vehicle: 2001-ish Dodge Intrepid Police Interceptor

Oldest vehicle: 1992-1996 Ford E-350 Traffic Control van

Used to see these darting around back before I even played GTA IV for the first time:

And that's how I got to the position I am in today.

EDIT: Whoops, these aren't in service. I still see some of these around, but they're going out of use now:

Most British response ever, but last time I checked, the Met police still had Teapot One in service. It's an old catering van, but it's still a police vehicle ;)

The original model was introduced in 1972, however, my guess is this is mid-90's.

NYPD has something like this... Don't know how old it is, but looks like straight from San Andreas.

The German Bereitschaftspolizei and Bundespolizei in International Airports still use the Sonderwagen 4 (Thyssen TM 170 SW4) from the 1980s (or Called Polizeipanzer and in English Police Tank):

And in Bulgaria they still use the 1998-2005 Opel Astra G:
