If LCPDFR was invited as a Game Feature on GTAV

So basically Unr3l what your saying as far as (the process will have to be repeated again) it will be AT LEAST a year before the game is even moddable?

It might even take that length of time to get a PC version of the game, if they release one. For GTA IV the console versions were released in April, it took until December to get the PC version out the door, and as I said before they don't make much revenue off of it. By the time it comes out everyone has already played and forgotten about the console version. I bought GTA IV twice. Once on the 360, and then I remember removing the PC version from a tote at my old job in 2008 and I said "Oh I forgot this was even coming out. I'll set this aside for the end of my shift."

When I installed it, it ran like a pile of crap and I left the game alone for another 5 months until I built a new PC. Anyway, after all of that stuff happens for GTA V, then they'll need to figure out if they can recode everything.

  • "just a simple script that can be implemented" Try telling the dev team that.

  • The most recognition we've ever had was a half-page feature in the February 2012 issue of PC Gamer magazine. Unfortunately after the 'hot coffee' scandal, Rockstar distanced themselves entirely from

It is actually a pretty complicated script, but that's not the real challenge (I imagine they'd reuse a lot of the higher-level code). The real issue is that running commands in a script involves literally telling the computer to load a particular address in the game's memory that you know happens to contain the function you're calling. Now, to actually use functions, there are tools that do that for you (specifically, C++ Scripthook will handle the actual calling for you; all you need to do is tell it which native functions to call). Then, you have Scripthook .NET, which lets you use C# and VB.NET instead of C++. It provides "nicer" ways to do a lot of things, and gives a lot of features (e.g., since it handles loading .NET scripts, you can start or stop a script or reload all scripts without restarting the game; also, script crashes generally won't crash GTA). LCPDFR has a C++ component written by LMS (who seems to be widely considered among the best scripters in GTA modding), and a .NET component (containing most of the logic; AdvancedHook is more a support package) written by the whole dev team.

To do ANY scripting on GTA V, we'd need a way to load in scripts. Once we have that, we need to be able to call native functions (fortunately, I *think* Scripthook is designed in such a way that that wouldn't be too hard). Also, we'd need to find out what the native functions even are and what type of arguments they take (which involves reversing the game), and then work out what the arguments represent (which involves a lot of thinking, as well as lots of trial and error - not all GTA IV natives are even fully reversed and documented yet). The good news is that there might be similarity with IV.

Once the natives are worked out, the way it'd probably work is someone figures out how to do .NET. Since this has been done once, it'll probably be faster than for IV, but modders lose interest and leave (and Aru got pissed off at least once about people cheating w/Scripthook).

That all has to be done to get this "simple script" working on GTA V.

Let's say it comes out in 2012 for consoles, then 2013 for PC's. Then we have it for PC, but it takes another year for it to be moddable, so 2014? Hopefully a little sooner than that!

I wish R* would support modding more, or even give us a few tools that they used to make the game like other devs have done.

Lets not forget that LCPD:FR was not always this advanced. It and all other mods for this game started from nothing. Going from LCPD:FR for GTA IV to one for the newer game might be like traveling back in time because you'll lose features you had before until they can be re-done. And if focus is shifted from GTA IV to GTA V, many features the devs have been thinking about and working on for months may never be realized, such as AI police cars doing their own pullovers, adding in additional weapons and tools like flashlights, batons and pepper spray, new callout scenarios and new vehicle modifications like spotlights, a new ELS system or better pedestrian modeling. Shifting to a new game will be a double edged sword.

Exactly. That's why game mods are inherently limited (unless it's someone like Valve, who intends for their engine to be modded).

I wouldn't imagine it would be redone completely from scratch, as they're using the same core game engine. Think of it in terms of the Unreal engine. There have been many games in the Unreal series, and many more developed using that engine, but the mods can be roughly ported over with some work. So if we cross our fingers and pray maybe the same will be true of LCPD:FR. I guess in this case however, the mod may have to be re-named entirely.

Doesn't the Unreal engine officially support mods, though? I don't think Rockstar would consider breaking mods a bug, especially because they could work around it.

Yes it does. Epic Games releases an SDK with each engine in a timely manner.

So that's a pretty big difference between the engines. Epic likes and supports mods, and will give you help in updating your mods. Rockstar won't.

I blame video games for making me work hard since I was 14. I blame video games for making me aim to become a police officer. I blame video games for allowing me to better myself and get a paramedic tech degree. I blame video games I love firearms and carry one every day. I blame video games...lol

People will do what they want. Video games don't make anyone do anything they aren't already willing to do.

Visit me on youtube. The most common reason for crashing is user error. Make sure you have the latest RAGE, ScripthookV, ScripthookVdotnet and turn off your antivirus. Make sure you have an up to date gameconfig.xml as well. Use Allbo's plugin troubleshooter to find any errors too.

I totally agree with this. I have been playing games for a long time especially the GTA series. When I was little let me tell you on the news it was always something with kids doing something related to GTA games. At first I was looking like these are little kids playing a mature game, this is why games like these have age restrictions. So on TV parents always states they blamed GTA games for their kids actions, but in all reality they should be blaming their selves because they bought it for their kids. I mean it's "Grand Theft Auto" what do you expect to be in the game? Then when I was in school we were reading some kind of article and again kids were doing things related to GTA and parents blamed GTA again. I mean I wish I could go there sometimes and blame them instead of Rockstar Games. If you want to blame someone blame yourself because it's your fault you got them the game. Now I have been playing GTA series for a long time now as I stated, and let me tell you when I first played GTA it wasn't really (for me) about killing the cops etc. I actually sat there and ran after criminals to help the cops. And what you said HolyOrangeJuice "People will do what they want. Video games don't make anyone do anything they aren't already willing to do." I 100 % agree with that statement.

So after reading this thread I still havn't gotten an answer to my question. I bought GTA IV for LCPD:FR and if I'm going to buy GTA V it will be because of LCPD:FR. So what do you recon the chances are of being able to create a mod like this? Will it be like 5% or closer to 50%?

I know that we won't know untill the game is released, but what do you think?

It'll certainly take time for the mod to develop, they don't start out as comprehensive as they are now. Think about it, this mod has been developed over 3 years. If the mod is made for V, then it will start off very basic.

I read that GTA 5 will using mostly the same code as GTA 4. Just this time they know how to use it better....
