Military Coup in Turkey - On-going

I think the main problem about a peaceful thing is the President is a borderline dictator, he basically seized control of the largest newspaper thus allowing him to control what is said about him. The President is basically asking citizens to breach the curfew and make life hell against the coupe, clutching at straws if you like.

🕵️‍♂️ Always watching, always waiting.

Let's hope so. I'm reading up on him and the PM and they are really terrible people. The PM called for literal segregation between males and females.

True, maybe the coup will help that, as of right now the government isn't doing much about ISIS.

They're doing jack shit about ISIL, and they're fighting the one's who fight against ISIL. Not only that, they're fucking up NATO - Russo relations as well. I hope this Coup D'etat makes an end to Erdogans twisted agenda.

CNN now reporting that the Intelligence unit believes the coup is over, however there is still fighting, and as far as everyone can tell the military still controls airports, bridges, and some gov't buildings.

It seems that there is no actual idea on what is going on. Apparently the Turkish Armed Forces site is stating they have full control over the country, I can't verify as their site seems to be unable to function due to all it's traffic.

Yeah, apparently there is no contact within the US military from Ankara, however they are getting information from Istanbul.

Honestly, it could go either way, I'm just hoping civil war doesn't break out and civilian casualties are kept at a minimum.

Breaking: CNN Turk has been taken by the military, Their broadcast is about to go down.

Many civilians are dead already. I'm not sure on the numbers, but I saw a rather graphic video on Facebook of a road littered with dead bodies and blood.

Let's hope this ends quickly. A civil war could spell trouble, especially if the Kurds and other Islamic Militants get involved.

I would like a secular Turkey, but I do not really want a pro-EU Turkey. Due to their location and large borders, I don't trust them to be able to check everyone at their borders, and their country is pretty corrupt.

Amen brother.

I start wondering if that whole thing wasn't made up by Erdogan just to reinforce his grasp over the country... As a 'happy' coincidence he wasn't there when the coup was attempted, and as a 'happy' coincidence he still had a massive reserve of soldiers to retaliate fiercely... It all seems a bit weird... :(

It might be.. It seems a little out of hand though.

Yeah.. But we dont need Edrogan in charge again, that could mean an even bigger problem.

That seems unlikely, but I wouldn't be surprised. I'm not an expert on Turkish politics, but what I do know about Erdogan certainly has me worried. He is thin skinned, and appears to be moving away from democracy. And no matter what set this off, I expect him to take advantage of the opportunity to assert more control. He was able to seize control of the situation through social media. So I assume that is something that will be of more concern to him.

Now he is blaming a Muslim cleric that resigns in the US for organizing this coup and wants him to be extradited. This is a big problem for the United States. I don't think we should turn him over without some proof, and assurance of treatment. Doing so may send a negative statement to Erdogan and his supporters, but America should not be complicit with an authoritarian power grab. Simply because a government is elected doesn't mean its actions are democratic.

I see a serious situation developing in Turkey. A big question for the US and West is can they continue to view Turkey as a memberstate, or has it evolved into a Middle-eastern state, requiring a re-assessment of our relationship? Hopefully, the people of Turkey will steer their leaders in the right direction. It was something to see how quickly they responded to Erdogan's call to take to the streets. I think that shocked coup-supporters. The troops didn't look like they knew what to do. It was a powerful statement.

Doesn't Turkey contribute the most to NATO right after the US? If so, this will spill bad news for NATO in terms of power. Plus, I expect that the US will be kicked out of their air bases which are in Turkey. That means that anti ISIL air bombing will be put on hold.

I also really wouldn't be surprised if the Kurds start something now. Civil war will come soon.

AHAHA I'm just laughing. Kurdish people it is not so strong. indivisible Turkey. Many Kurds loves Turkey. And I am pretty sure Many Kurds gives life for Turkey. Remove the civil war of the mind.. this is not Syria. Turkey will not compromise as always.Do you know the past of the Turkish war of independence?
