Need help buying/building or upgrading a computer?

I am working on my very first build as well , and looking at some of your specs , your wasting your money , you only really need one optical drive unless you intend on burning movies or data on blu-ray burner , and the 250 GB ssd , if you are going for a 1TB hdd and want a SSD , go for less than 120GB , and a titan , you can get really good graphics out of less on a graphics card , like a 670 or even a 660TI , you would save several hundred dollars simply dropping a few items , my build was originally going to cost $1600 after taxes , now it is only $1350

Thanks for the advise. Might as well drop those items.

I doubt it will. If I told you my current PC can run GTAIV maxed out with an ENB with 100 FPS, would you believe me? I have a Radeon HD 4350, an AMD Phenom II 910 and 8gb of memory. Do you even know w

  • Is that even a PC? Regardless, can you post your specs please?

Aw hell naw. That thing will either blow up or implode when you play GTA.

Thanks for the advise. Might as well drop those items.

For the purpose of GTA IV , i know a i5 3750K , a gtx 650 TI from evga , and 12 GB of ram will give you great preformance , so that 650 alone would save you $150 bucks on your video card

Im very new here and extremely impressed by what you guys can do with this game and the cars. I have a computer i want to fix up for my son so he can play the lcpdfr. After countless hours that he has spent on youtube watching i am finally going to let him. First off i am willing to spend some money on the computer but need to know what needs to be upgraded or replaced. It is a AMD Athlon 64 processor 3800+, 2.40 Ghz 1.00 GB of Ram,218g of free hard drive space, and a ATI RAdeon N625 graphic card.If you can please let me know what i should upgrade or replace and with what. Thank myou very much

I'm glad you can see some of the magic in the modding community and in video games in general. Based on what you said, I strongly suggest you scrap what you have as no upgrades you can make to this computer will make the game run it with all of the fancy graphics modifications you may have seen on various YouTube videos, or even be playable with the default game installed on higher graphics settings.

As an example, the processor or 'CPU' you mentioned is nearly a decade old. The Athlon 64 3800+ was released on June 1st, 2004 and uses a 'CPU' socket called '939' that is no longer made. As newer processors and various other parts come out, they change in size and shape due to manufacturers either trying to shrink the size of their product for energy and space reasons, or increase the size of their product for performance reasons. New processors have different sockets as often as every year. The same will also go for your other parts.

The type of RAM in your computer is called 'DDR' or 'Double Data Rate' which is again, a pin type no longer supported or made in large quantities. 'DDR2' made its way into mainstream home PC's around 2005/2006, and we are now in the era of 'DDR3' which will also likely change soon. All that being said, at the end of the day, all you need to know is the pin types are incompatible.

Your graphics card is; you guessed it, a slot type that is once again not made or supported, called 'AGP' or 'Accelerated Graphics Port'. 'PCI Express' which is now the current standard made its way into mainstream computing around 2005/2006 is much faster and a different size and shape than its predecessor.

Lastly your hard drive will be once again be tied to a type of connector no longer made or supported called 'PATA' or 'Parallel AT Attachment'. The modern hard drives now use a much smaller and better performing cable/connection type called 'SATA' or 'Serial AT Attachment'.

I'll reiterate that attempting to upgrade to larger quantities of said old RAM, old CPU speed and old graphics cards will be fruitless as it will not run the game as needed. What needs to be understood before proceeding is that there are two things that people need to consider when buying a big ticket item, be it a TV, a computer, a car or even a house for that matter; price, and cost.

Price is what you see on a sticker, and can be shocking to some if they don't know what they're buying. Cost is the long term investment, and a well thought out understanding of how a product will benefit you and pay for itself. As an example, the price of a $300 Compaq desktop computer is attractive, but the overall cost of the unit will be heightened dramatically over any serious period of time due to lackluster performance that only gets worse with time, faulty or inferior quality parts that merit upgrade and repairs, and general headaches you may get from said issues. Peoples patience does indeed have a sticker price of its own.

It will come down to value for you and your son. PC gaming is a bit different than its console counterparts due to its liberty. You have freedom of choice of the types of games you get to choose from. the graphics, the hardware you use to play the game, and as you've seen; modifications. PC gaming can be very rewarding from an entertainment standpoint, but if your son embraces computers altogether; your desktop can even be a gateway to a good paying career for him if he truly learns to love technology like some of us here. You will both have to see the value in it and determine whether you're both looking to test the waters or go all-in.

Testing the waters, meaning being able to play the game mostly as shown on various YouTube videos and having short term accommodations for future games would likely be an investment of around $600+ in the desktop tower alone for a respectable computer. If you both know this is what he loves to do in his spare time and want to make this a big investment where the graphical horsepower and future proofing is strong, expect to be spending around a grand or a little more for the tower alone. I encourage you to do a little bit of thinking, and remember to respond, again, based on 'cost' and value. Not 'price'.

Unr3al........ Soooooo Your sayiiiiing? Just kidding. Well thank you very much at least I know not to waste the money on this one. Do you recommend any minimum requirements for a computer for this game

Hey guys im trying to get LCPDFR up and running! Im currently building a desktop pc. So far I have the current specs:

i5-3570K Quad Core 3.4 GHz

MSI Z77A-45G Gaming Mobo

4-8GB Ram (haven't decided yet)

I was wondering if my setup so far is up to spec to run the mod. And also a good video card to get as well. I was told even the old GTX460 would work. But as of now I was looking at the GTX650 2 GB. Let me know if Im headed in the right direction and any advice. Thanks!

Literal minimum requirements for the game can be found with a quick Google search, but would result in simply allowing you to install and launch the game. Performance would be bad, even on moderate graphics settings. My recommended guidelines for running this game the way it's shown in some of the fancy YouTube videos, plus growing room for other games in the future:

AMD FX-8120 Zambezi 3.1GHz Socket AM3+ 125W Eight-Core Desktop Processor

Prolimatech PRO-PNTH 120mm Panther CPU Cooler

Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Paste

MSI 970A-G46 Motherboard

CORSAIR Builder Series CX600 600W Power Supply

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 RAM

COOLER MASTER HAF series RC-912-KKN1 Case

nVidia GeForce GTX 760 Graphics Card

Seagate 1TB 7200RPM Hard Drive

Total build cost ~$843

You can change out items as you please like RAM (I'd go no less than 6GB) and maybe the graphics card, or even the CPU. But I'd advise against a cheaper CPU. I chose an AMD CPU and motherboard for you because they're far cheaper than Intels in many cases (although they perform worse). You could also use an AMD graphics card if you want, but generally the cost isn't much different and I feel that nVidia products are superior in nearly all cases. A comparable AMD card probably wouldn't save you much money.

You will also of course need a copy of Windows, but which version and how you obtain it I'll leave up to you.

The other folks on here may have different ideas, but this computer is very muscular, uses reliable parts with top tier brand names and you're paying very little for it compared to what you might end up buying in a retail store. As an example:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Desktop+-+16GB+Memory+-+1TB+Hard+Drive/1362252.p?id=1219050991777&skuId=1362252&st=asus%20desktop&cp=1&lp=1

This computer does indeed have a Core i7 CPU which will likely perform better head to head against the AMD chip I picked out. It also has twice as much RAM. That being said, the overall strength of the computer is actually low compared to what I picked out for you, because it lacks in all other areas. It has a power supply only big enough to accommodate the parts inside, not other things like big video cards (which it can only fit one of inside the chasis). It has vanilla, budget RAM that will likely run at slower speeds and may not have adequate cooling. The motherboard's options menu will be locked down pretty tight which will make tweaking or troubleshooting much harder than it could be. The graphics card is of no real value and would likely not perform any better than if you didn't have one at all. 16GB of RAM is unnecessary as games today won't even take up half of that. That's money ASUS spent that could be better spent someplace else (like your graphics card as an example). Lastly the quality of the parts used to build the retail computer are questionable at best. The motherboard, hard drive, RAM and power supply in that computer are picked due to their low cost and ease of manufacturing.

The list of parts above is a rough draft I threw together in about 10 minutes. I spent more money on my PC because my expectations are very high, and after throwing together a list for myself, I did extensive research into each part to be sure that the name brands were quality and the particular products I chose had good reputations. You, or someone else here may have different ideas about what to pick, but if you're looking to save $200-300 over a competing Intel computer, this would work since it cuts a couple of corners but still delivers a strong gaming and entertainment experience. Please note that neither my build, nor the Best Buy computer have a monitor included. Getting a new one or re-using one you may already have (don't bother if it's not a wide screen and reasonably large) is an option you can decide on.

1.) Try not to double post.

2.) Your first build doesn't have a graphics card in it.

3.) Your second build uses a server CPU.

Sorry for double posting, i'm new to the lcpdfr modding community and pretty much clueless when it comes to gaming computers. I am looking into ether buying a pre-built gaming computer, or building one like everybody says i should, i don't know where to start though. have very little knowledge of building computers or what goes where and what parts are good and whats not. Could you or someone help give me some suggestions on a good computer or parts for a build? I have a budget in the area of 800 give or take

You can try the build I posted for someone else a little bit above if you scroll up. That totaled to $843. You can check out some YouTube videos to gain some knowledge on how to assemble parts together, or get some help from a buddy who has experience.

ok, i didnt know whether or not to trust the build above since you said you came up with it in 10 minutes. ill research the stuff above maybe ill have some luck, is all the stuff in the list above compatible with the motherboard?

It's a complete system. I took enough time to make sure the parts matched up, but yes, I only spent about 10 minutes. I'm not here to build PCs for people one by one. It was just an example, and like I said above, that's not my preferred build. I  spent more and went with an Intel powered computer. You can tweak things as you see fit.

could that build run lcpdfr on high settings with mods and els? and would this intel processor perform better than the amd 8 core and is it compatible with all of the other parts

Intel Core i7-3820 Sandy Bridge-E 3.6GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 2011 130W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80619i73820

Either like a 3930K or a 4700K and a matching motherboard but they're both substantially more expensive. And yes, that would run LCPDFR and all of the fancy mods fine, but the point of getting better specs is to be prepared for the future. When or if GTA V comes out for PC as an example. I'd be better prepared for its demanding game engine at higher details settings than someone running the build I posted. I don't like turning details down.
