Ability to drive and type on the computer

Featured Replies

A very real concept in real life, but unless you got a split screen going on I can see some fender-benders going on with a computer screen covering the monitor while driving.

Remember never 'text-and-drive' :P

:) if the computer dialog screen was as small as the radio check screen it wouldn't be hard to do. I just find myself having to follow someone till a red light and hope they don't take off on me before I run the check.

If this is the case and I haven't tested the new version yet, I would use the police radio and run the tags while moving and if a flag hits the screen then proceed for a pull over and run further analysis on wants & warrants through the computer. Just an idea for a work-around.

I don't think real police are trying to type license plates into a computer while pursuing suspects or tailing a vehicle. They just use the radio unless their laptops have voice recognition.

Not entirely true, I volunteer for my police department and go on patrol myself and have rode with several police officers, some do type in the computer while driving that is if you can manage doing both, usually they do it at intersections while they wait for the traffic light change. Running tags that is...

The problem is as soon as the dialog box appears to run the search you can no longer use the controller in the background.. So essentially I just lose speed and the suspect unless I Mark them

That or use policeradio, run tags on the fly and then pull them over for more info.

@StrykerUSMC if I remember correctly it's the same issue. As soon as the dialog box appears you lose control of the gamepad.

@Sam I figured as much. Although I have faith that there is nothing you wont be able to implement .. just a matter of time.

Very illegal and unrealistic of a police officer to do.

Depends where you live, I suppose.

But I've been on 3 ridealongs with my local police. They are CONTINUOUSLY checking plates on the laptop while driving. They are encouraged to pull over when they need to use their department cell phones, but it is not required.

Distracted driving laws, in most jurisdictions, do not apply to police officers. In fact, a police officer, when performing his/her duties, can break any traffic law that they need to, with or without the sirens.

I would like this feature. However, that being said, as Sam said, it isn't possible.

I would much prefer a police computer that did not interfere with the controls for the rest of the game. That was a very frustrating part of the police computer in LCPDFR.

If you want to run the plate of a moving vehicle, its best to follow them and wait for a chance to stop. Over 80% of the time, they will come to a red light or stop sign, and you can do it then. OR, if FinKone is able to update his Police Radio to talk to the LSPDFR API (I think he was planning to, but I'm not sure, so don't quote me on that), then that's another way for us to run plates.

I unfortunately do not have enough free time to answer every PM that I get. For issues with my plugins, please post in the comments section of the file, or it's forum thread. At the LAPD, distracted driving is not usually a concern because most officers ride two to a car, with one operating the computer while the other drives. Other local police departments, including Pasadena's and Huntington Park's, have rules resembling those recently adopted by the Sheriff's Department.

Typing behind the wheel is not illegal for law enforcement officers, as it is for civilian drivers in California. But under the revised policy enacted Feb. 25, L.A. County deputies may use their computers only when they are pulled over or stopped at a light.

Exceptions include emergencies or when a deputy hits a single button such as "acknowledge" or "en route." The car radio, not the computer, should be the primary means of communication, the policy states — a throwback to an older technology.

Not really, no. Although it varies from state to state and country to country, where I live (Canada, specifically Ontario) where I've gone on a dozen or so ride alongs, they're always checking the computer, this is usually attached to the traffic division, however regular patrol are actively bringing up plates on the go. Typically though, the regular patrol usually have two officers, whereas the traffic division is usually solo unless given a specific duty/task.

For my city, it varies on each division and unit depending on the patrol designated, not every patrol is accompanied by two officers (although this is being phased out due to the increasing unnecessary violence against police officers around the world). Even our K-9 division now has two officers instead of the typical one, the dog and the handler.
