Alright so I am a police explorer and am going to be a community service in the next few months, if everything goes as planned. I am looking at ordering some new things for my duty belt. I am ordering two pairs of cuffs and two cases to hold them. I cannot decide which case to go with though..... so your help would be greatly appreciated. Whether it's based off of real world experience or just aesthetics. These cases are going to be on my rear and the ASP cuffs will be in the front. So two peerless hinged cuffs in the back and ASP tac cuffs in the front. I decided to make this post because I am going to have this duty belt for the next 10 years at the very least.

Here are the two additional pairs of cuffs I am ordering -

And I am trying to decide between these two

If I get the latter of the two I am going to have the cuffs dangle into my rear pockets.

I currently have this in my front.

I know I'm a little late to the party, but as a former Explorer and CSO, and a current LEO, I would definitely say get the Accumold.   You don't want more than two cuffs on you at once, the belt is

What exactly are you doing in this community service?

I'm not sure if you are allowed an individual choice of cuffs to use, however, if you are I would recommend the Hiatt Speedcuff as it provides an easy method of restraint with the rigid link should the suspect decide to resist arrest.

Our counterparts in the UK to the role you aim to undertake are not allowed to carry restraining devices (hancuffs, legstraps, spithoods etc) so make sure it's legal for you to carry them.

Yeah, what Sean said.

" Community Service Officers (CSOs) are part-time non-sworn uniformed employees who assist the Department by handling duties such as animal control, parking enforcement, aiding motorists, vehicle lockouts and traffic control that don’t require a police officer. "

That's the description given on my City's website. We also started doing prisoner transports recently.

See like I really like the look of this

A bit off-topic, but... Lord.. They allow explorers and volunteers to participate in actual law enforcement? Investigate accidents? Transport prisoners? The U.S. must be a law enforcement heaven

I have to agree on this. I'm reaching the end of my "explorer" career after 6 years and I'm currently the rank of Lieutenant. The chances of you using any of these 3 cuffs besides training is never. Explorers are not sworn officers and it would be a huge liability for your police agency to let you carry them unless for training.

Based on my personal experience, stay away from ASP cuffs. I've seen too many videos and in person demonstrations of people unlocking or breaking them with minimal effort. I trust plastic for a lot of things, but not for handcuffs.

I would also personally stay away from single strap carriers. The cuffs jingle and make noise which can give away your position when clearing a building or moving around at night looking for an outstanding suspect.

I'm not sure what your agency uniform policy is, some places dictate the number and placement of your cuffs and some don't, but with the Sheriff's Office where I live now the Deputy is allowed to do pretty much any set up they want. My personal preferred set up as has always been a double cuff case on my front right side with two pairs of hinge cuffs, and two single cuff cases on my back sides (one left and one right) with chain cuffs. Yes, I prefer to have 4 pairs of cuffs in case you're alone and something goes sideways with that car full of 4 people and backup isn't nearby, or you get 2 overweight guys that need two pair of cuffs each, or a fellow officer didn't have enough cuffs for the clown car you're arresting, etc. I'm a big guy so carrying 3 cuff cases isn't a space issue for me.

I also prefer to have hinge cuffs up front for quick easy access during routine arrests / detentions since they limit mobility better, and have the chain cuffs behind me for a fight when I wouldn't be able to get hinge cuffs on easily and the chain cuffs are on my back so I can still get to them if I'm laying on top of a combative subject.

For whatever it's worth, I also swear by the Hindi Safety System for duty belt arrangement. Equipment is ergonomically placed, and mostly any piece can be accessed by either hand, which could save your life.

Explorers generally are not armed and are under the direct supervision of full time officers and are really only there to explore and observe. Sometimes they direct traffic at major public events and such.

Volunteers on the other hand vary from state to state and agency to agency. Where I live now, the Sheriff's Office has one of the largest volunteer Reserve programs in the country. Our Reserve Deputies are fully state certififed peace officers that have been through the same academy, same selection and hiring process, same training, same testing, as any other police officer. Our Reserve Deputies wear the same uniform, have the same authority, and do the same job as the "regular" Deputies. The only difference bewteen the "Reserves" and the "Regulars" is that the Reserves don't get paid. That's it. Same qualifications, same training, same job, no pay check.

Here's the Reserve Command Website if you want to know more: http://www.hcsoreservecommand.org/

Here's a recent video about the program:

Honestly, when I was in cadets, they told us NOT to carry our handcuffs like that, they make too much noise, they also told us to not have our keys dangling on our belt too. To me, I feel like that snap would come undone easily. I ended up getting one like the first picture, except nylon. Leather wears out too easy for my taste.

I will need handcuffs when I become a Community Service Officer in the upcoming months, as well as an ASP baton. And there has been times in explorers when I needed more than one pair of cuffs, so these are definitely a must, and will be used.

You completely swayed my decision and I am probably gonna go with the closed case. I will also look into the HINDI thing seems like it is useful.

I like the basketweave covered case, thats what I use... The one thing to take into account is leather is going to be heavier than nylon... The belt itself is already going to be decently weighted then adding leather to it makes it that much more heavy... Just a thought

I was sworn in by the Sheriff of our county when we finished our classes, we didn't really participate in law enforcement. We did a lot of traffic stuff for the deputies and we dealt with drunk people at events, but when it came time to use more than just talking, we had to get an officer or deputy to assist. Although, there was a time a huge fight broke out at a concert and an officer used 2 pairs of cuffs and asked to use mine because he was out. So, yeah, you might need to use them in an extreme case.
