There's no point in buying Alienware, you'll be able to get a equally powerful laptop for less.

I'd suggest investing in a decent desktop, and a cheaper laptop if you actually need the mobility of a laptop

A common trend with "gaming laptops", is that they tend to die much quicker than less powerful laptops and desktops.

I would go with what Nicolaib says, get a gaming desktop, and mediocre laptop for caring around. You can get a decent gaming laptop but regardless of the brand it will most likely be over $1000.00 as Jay said. As far as Alienware, I saw some the other day that were around the same price as some Tosiba (sp) gaming laptops. One thing though if you really are thing of a gaming laptop, keep in mind you will need a fork lift to carry it around, as they do tend to weigh a lot more then most standard ones do.

You could save yourself heaps of money by building a desktop computer. By buying a Alienware, your paying for the pretty lights and the logo. If you build/buy a desktop PC, you can improve the airflow and therefore your parts will last longer. Also PC parts are easily upgradeable and will be cheaper in the long run when new and better graphics cards come out.

I purchased a powerful HP laptop for college a few months ago, works like a dream and can run GTA IV on high settings.

It will last long if you treat it with care.. I do this;

  • Keep it on a cooling pad with three fans underneath to keep it cool
  • I know the hardware limit's so I don't push it further than it can handle
  • Clean out any collective dust once a month

Mines still running strong, had it since september

Processor: Intel i5-6600 @ 3.30GHz

GPU: MSI ARMOR GeForce GTX 1080 OC

Ram: 16GB Skylake

DV7 just denotes that it's a 17" laptop, nothing more. It's probably from the 'Envy' serious, or it could be something simpler like a dv7-6145dx which had a Core i5 and some kind of a Radeon GPU with 512mb of RAM. Nothing spectacular. You're paying for the portability.

I'd look into an Asus if you're going to get a gaming laptop. Personally, if you don't really need the portability, get a desktop.

Correct, mine has an i5.

Processor: Intel Core i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30GHz (4 CPUs)

GPU: ATI Radeon HD 6490M (Approx. Total Memory: 3.8GB - 1gb dedicated)

RAM: 6GB

Like I said, purely for college work. But it run's games like IV perfectly well on high settings, providing I keep it cooled.
