A Georgia toddler has been put into a medically induced coma after he was badly burned by a police “flash bang” grenade that landed in the crib where the boy was sleeping during a drug raid, his mother told ABC News today.

The raid occurred before dawn Wednesday night in Habersham County while the Phonesavanh family was sleeping.

“It was a big flash, a loud bang, a bunch of yelling, and my son screaming,” the boy’s mom, Alecia Phonesavanh, 27, told ABC News.

“Two of my other girls were next to my husband. There was a member of the SWAT team pinning him down, another man had my son who was screaming and crying,” Phonesavanh said.

“At that time I didn’t see his playpen, but I kept telling him to ‘Please just give him to me,’” Phonesavanh said of 19-month-old son Bounkham. “‘He’s just scared.’”

Bounkham Phonesavanh, a 19-month-old, was severely injured during a SWAT team raid.

According to Phonesavanh, authorities reassured her that everything was fine, “‘He’s okay, he’s just fine, there’s nothing wrong with him,’” she recalled through tears.

“They lied to me. They kept telling me my son was okay,” she said. “When I saw his playpen I just about threw up. I got really sick, I was so scared.”

“That picture is enough to traumatize anybody knowing that there was a baby lying there,” Phonesavanh said.

When police raided the house early Wednesday morning, they dropped a “flash bang” which police concede landed and exploded in the child’s portable crib.

“It landed in his playpen and exploded on his pillow right in his face,” Phonesavanh told ABC’s Atlanta affiliate

The mother of the child wants police to pay the 1 million dollar medical bill of her poor child. Here's the petition please support her.

Would you want to pay 1 million in medical bills for a mistake that wasn't your fault?

  • this is old news bud and why did you have to copy and paste?

  • I can't even fathom why you think that they deliberately flashbanged a child in a crib?   Police pay the bills. It was an accident. Flashbanging rooms like that is safer for officers, you can't just

Okay this story is confusing me, so no one got arrested at the raid, but eventually someone did? Also I just have to ask: why do people request such a preposterous amount of money after they have been hurt by the police!?!?

Well sorry, I didn't realize that it costed one million dollars for medical bills, in that this the officers fault and punishment should definitely follow, my mistake.

Edit: okay this is an old news story, why did you post this? And this is copied and pasted, no effort was put into it, do you see why illusionary says there should be stricter guidelines on news topics? :wallbash:

That dumb mother was angry that the officers were trying to reassure her, sure like it would have made her any happier to hear truthfully,"Your small near defenseless child is in a medically induced coma, after a flash bang exploded in his face." Does she want another million dollars for libel. I don't mean to mimic this incident, it is truly tragic, and someone must pay the medical bills(COPS!) But after the fact in hearing this happened I got angry when I read mentioned part.

I don't think any major punishment should take place, it was merely a mistake, maybe better procedures for next time.

I agree, a little poor judgment by the officer, at most a small fee and an apology letter.

Because a goverment agency put a baby into a coma? Its not that complicated.

*sniff* I smell a lawsuit. On a serious note I think it was a complete mistake, but the police should pay the bill and make a public apology.

i remember reading about this too. and i agree with Homer. mistakes happen. as long as the family has their bills taken care of and perhaps some for the child to live if he is permanently injured i think that should be the limit.

The story is old new, however the petition is new news. And the family requested that I promote the petition.  word for word.

Nope Officers are suppose to take precautions when entering a building. An officer si to suppose to look when throwing such device. he could have rolled it into the house. they should 1 pay million for bills and the family 6 million for pain and suffering. No money is worth a life however they must pay someway.

He could have rolled it, right. He could have looked, and gotten shot in the face, right. I agree there should be payment, I agree it was a mistake. I'm also tired of everyone sitting on our couches and judging what's going through the officers heads when things happen. I can think of two good examples of this right now. I'm not saying anyone here is guilty of judging, I'm just saying it's something I see happening more and more.

If a suspect is not expecting you I doubt he is prepared. The second I opened that door and noticed a crib I would have tried another way.
