NYPD Officers Show Disrespect At Funeral In Protest

Featured Replies

Police officers turned their backs on New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Sunday during the funeral for Wenjian Liu, one of two NYPD officers killed in a Dec. 20 ambush, exposing the ongoing rift between the department and City Hall.

The officers were seen turning away from an outdoor screen showing de Blasio’s eulogy at the service in Brooklyn, defying a request by New York Police Commissioner William Bratton not to protest at the funeral.

“A hero’s funeral is about grieving, not grievance,” Bratton wrote in a memo to officers on Friday, less than a week after officers turned their backs on de Blasio at the funeral of Rafael Ramos, the other NYPD slain officer. “I remind you that when you don the uniform of this department, you are bound by the tradition, honor, and decency that go with it.”

I heard about this story, Personally i think the city of New York needs a new mayor as he can't seem to be able to handle the pressure that is on him. If not that, than new policies should be put into effect and i mean effective polices, not BS ones.

The guy has also told his son to be careful around cops, like not reaching for things because he's a "young man of color". What NYPD cop is not gonna recognize the mayor's son? I believe he said that after the Eric Garner decision, and that's when it got bad between de Blasio and the NYPD. It's amazing how he can be so against the people who protect him and his family 24/7. All in all...

i have been very vocal on facebook about this very subject. while i have many friends and family members involved in law enforcement, NOTHING that the mayor did/said should have caused these officers to give payback during a dam funeral. it is a topic discussed among families for years..you hear of someone dying that you dont necessarily care about BUT you go anyways out of RESPECT!! And these thousands of officers, who would hate to have someone come to their spouses funeral and say how big of a bitch she was. Funerals are reserved for grieving and THATS IT!

There are ways to punish the mayor IF he offended officers. They could have taken to facebook or called a press conference. In my opinion, most of those officers took the easy road instead of having the balls to represent themselves on tv or media and confront the mayor, they took the "they cant fire us all" approach and made themselves look foolish in front of leaders from around the world. I can't see one argument, not one, that can justify their actions at a funeral. none.

Considering the numbers, http://nypost.com/2014/12/31/the-numbers-add-up-to-one-fact-cops-are-a-blessing-to-nyc/ , I'd say NYC is a great place to live and the police need to be supported by the mayor or he needs to gtfo.

I'm loving this "work stoppage" the NYPD is doing. They're actually doing their jobs. The NYPD and their union are just crying like children because de Blasio isn't an enabler like Bloomberg and is actually willing to challenge them when necessary. Putting any blame on him for this is asinine.

Personally, I like the cops protesting. DeBlasio and his liberal agenda ran on an Anti-Cop mayor platform (And other Democrat platforms), and since everyone in America, especially liberal city folk hate cops, he got elected.

Cops don't get enough support these days, and I'm glad NYC has a strong, boisterous union showing that police are here to stay and serve as professional, public service men and women.

With that said, turning your backs while somebody is speaking about a dead city police officer is absolutely revolting. A funeral is a time and place for the utmost respect, and bringing politics into the situation when somebody is remembering a dead person by turning around is astoundingly selfish, shame on them.

de Blasio had nothing to do with the killing of the two officers. His policies had nothing to do with the killing of the two officers. Nothing he has ever said has ever had anything to do with the killing of the two officers.

This is politicizing the killing of their fellow officers, and its absolutely pathetic.

There's a time and a place for everything, and this just wasn't it.

Exactly! If they wan't to challenge Diblasio, they have a very powerful union that can do that, and it already is avidly. But this just wasn't the right time and place.

yeah i was reading about how citations or arrests went down almost 90% in the same span last year. while it was admitted that these were not felonies it still shows that the police willfully chose not to pursue crimes. every crime, big or small, has a victim. let's hope they can get this crap settled before somebody takes advantage of the situation and goes apeshit and kills a bunch of people :P
