A hatchet-swinging psycho turned a busy Queens street corner into a scene of bloody chaos Thursday, chopping one cop in the back of the head and slicing a second cop in the arm before two other officers shot him dead on the spot.

The cop struck in the head is in serious condition at Jamaica Hospital, where the second injured officer was also rushed — conscious and alert, according to police sources.

A 29-year-old homeless woman who happened to be passing by the madness was also struck by a stray police bullet; her injury was deemed life threatening, according to police sources.

The violence began at 2 p.m., when four cops tried to break up a shouting dispute between the yet-named psycho and a woman at the corner of Jamaica Avenue and 160th Street.

“The cops yelled ‘Drop it!’” said rattled eyewitness Larry Bethune, 44, of Hollis, Queens, recalling the moment the psycho pulled a small hatchet from his jacket.

“And he lunged at one of them,” the witness remembered. “He raised his arm up high and brought it straight down on the cop’s head.

“The cop went down to the ground, face first. It was horrible. I’ve never seen anything like that on Jamaica Avenue,” he added. “The cop’s just lying there with blood pouring down his face. He didn’t move.”

Another witness, Kelli Reddica, 24, recalled hearing seven shots ring out as the crazed man was brought down, and seeing the downed cop’s horrible injury.

“He looked like he couldn’t move, and blood was gushing out of his head. Blood just drenched the side of his face,” she said.

Mayor de Blasio and Police Commissioner William Bratton were rushing to Jamaica Hospital Thursday afternoon.

In addition to the two cops struck with the hatchet, the officers who opened fire were also rushed to hospitals for ringing in their ears, a source said.

I wish both injured officers speedy recoveries; this was truly a senseless act of insanity.

On the plus side, the NYPD officer that was hit with the ax was released from the hospital recently. He will be undergoing physical therapy - I hope his recovery goes well!

The one that caught one in the head? Good news for real, imagine how glad the family is!

That must be a joke.

That's correct; the officer that had been struck in the arm was released previously.  The officer that took the hit in the head is surely made of some stern stuff!

On that second point, perhaps "rushed" was an exaggerated term.  Tinnitus is a real condition though.
