  • Yeah, and we should ban killing innocent people while we're at it too.   Isn't your country one of the most dangerous on earth, despite having some of the strictest gun control out of any country?

  • Halifax Regional Police just had a standoff yesterday with an armed individual, apparently people picked 2014 to stop taking their meds.

The people that do this are snafu- an unofficial term for sub-normal and fuc*ing useless.

Nothing these snafu will do will ever surprise me. They're just disgusting.

Actually violent crimes have decrease in the last 20-25 years (check the FBI stats if you wish, it's all there).  Everything is in the news today, and the more blood and guts, the more sensational, the more coverage.  It's just the coverage has increase 100-fold but the body counts are down overall.

Prayers for the families of these fallen officers, and the officers themselves.  God bless!

How's strict gun control working out for Chicago?

I believe it is like, no semi-auto or auto rifles unless the mag has less than 15 round mags, correct me if im wrong, and i think you have to under go a training seminar on gun safety.

"carry gun" is different of "have gun"

"carry gun" is different of "have gun"

So tell me why 2 people that have plans to go on a suicidal rampage against police give a damn about getting caught carrying a gun, when they are about to kill other people and then kill themselves at the end instead of getting caught. A majority of all gun crime, especially in major cities, is committed by people who do not have concealed carry permits using cheap handguns.

These attackers in this case were felons like in a majority of illegal shootings, so they were not allowed to acquire a gun in the first place.

It should also be noted that nearly every single mass shooting in the United States (4 or more people killed besides suspect(s)) occurs in what is known as a gun free zone, where it is illegal to carry a firearm, regardless if you have a permit to carry or not (which no mass shooter has had).

The state of Illinois had an extremely difficult to acquire permit system until the beginning of this year, and Chicago, which banned stepping out of your house with a gun unless it was disassembled, had more firearms murders than any other city in the United States.

Oh, and your country also has very strict laws about concealed carry permits, and it tends to only be the rich or politicians that can get one in your country. That doesn't stop the criminals in your country from carrying guns either.

Sticks and stones may break bones, but 5.56 fragments on impact.

Banning firearms is the most knee-jerk, pointless reaction one can have.  One that requires no thought what-so-ever...almost a glib response.

Time and time again, history shows us over and over, that banning guns does nothing but empower the criminals and crime rates spiral out of control.  Every time, in almost every location it has been tried, crime rates spike.  Look it up if you think this assertion is wrong.

Common sense will tell you that if guns are banned, the only people whom abide by these laws "law abiding people"....criminals don't.  For the most part criminals are opportunists, and take advantage of situations.  The areas with the most pervasive gun laws also have the highest crime rates...go figure huh?

These kind of responses of ban this and ban that come from those who have no idea about human nature nor cause and effect.  Just like those that support socialism; they just don't realize it goes against the very essence of basic human nature, therefore will NEVER work...as it has never worked in the history of man-kind.

If you understand human nature, you'll understand why these things are pointless and only hurt those that it's suppose to help.

This is a cultural discussion, i know US like weapons ... but the United States criminals use AK-47 , and heavy guns (2 cops killed) . Here we just have inofenssive revolvers looks like .22cal .38cal and homemade guns.  (exclude rio de janeiro) :)   remember  "carry weapon" is different of "have weapon".

No, a massive majority of crime is committed with small, concealable handguns because you're going to draw attention if you're 2 blocks away from a robbery carrying an Ak47. Those cops this thread is about were killed with handguns, and the suspects had 4 handguns and one shotgun, which they were already banned from owning because of felonies on their record.

Of all fatal shootings in the US in the year 2011, 6,220 were committed with handguns. Only 323 were committed with rifles of any type, and there is no distinction of the type of rifle, which would include bolt action, lever action and pump action rifles, as well as semi-automatic rifles (just because something is semi-auto does not make it the government's definition of an "assault weapon).

And yes, I know the difference between "have" and "carry." But I'm able to figure out that people who broke the law and plan to kill people then kill themselves don't care about punishment for carrying a weapon.

Because gun shots to the head of any caliber at point blank tend to be fatal, or at the very least disabling. It doesn't take any training to walk by some one, pull out a handgun and shoot them in the back of the head.

The Virginia Tech shooting had over 30 people killed, and the shooter was only using handguns.

Is that all fatal gunshots, or just homicides? I'd expect the number of deaths from rifles to be higher due to suicides.

This is not correct. As c13 mentioned, crime in the US is by and large committed with handguns, because it's really, really hard to conceal a rifle. There is no inoffensive gun. There is no such thing as a non-lethal gun. Any firearm is capable of killing, and rifles bring no advantage to criminals unless they actually intend to engage armed opponents (spoiler: they don't, because getting into a gunfight with police is suicidal). Additionally, there aren't a whole lot of legal automatic firearms for civilians in the US (it's illegal for a civilian to own an automatic weapon made post-1986, so legal automatic weapons are really expensive), and few crimes are committed with *illegal* automatic weapons, because, again, those tend not to be easy to conceal and give no practical advantage for the vast majority of gun crime.
