[DEBATE] Your Opinion On Legalizing Marijuana

Featured Replies

But if alcohol and cigarettes are legal, then why is marijuana not?

Sadly because of it's long, long history and popularity, (not to mention the money it makes for the government) it's widely accepted in our society.

I don't see how it is not, it's also a substance that is used recreationally and has a similar effect on the body, as well as various health impacts.

And I agree with that. I don't think people should smoke, though it's up to them of course and I won't push it.

If marijuana is confined to within someone's home, where no-one else can be affected, then I don't see a problem with it being legalized.

I agree with this also. I posted my original two cents on page 6 if ya wanna see some background on how I feel about the subject.

Oh God pageking help.

Hell no.   When you hear about legalizing marijuana, you always hear that it will lower crime and boost the economy. To be honest, I think that is the biggest load of bullshit. With the regarding cr

Marijuana has a long history too, except it hasn't been legal. It's also very popular, and it would make lots of money for the government.

If it was legalized, it would no longer be a "gateway" drug since it would be controlled. Buyers would also be sure what is in the product itself, since in some places there are dealers who mix it with other drugs in order to move people onto harder stuff.

It seems at the moment that the only reason you have against it being legalized is the fact that similar substances have "history" and "popularity".

You're forgetting the money. Not only does tobaccoes bring money, it brings voters, and it also brings job. All the tobacco farmers, fertilizer companies, researchers, retail businesses, then there's export/import and so much more. All the licenses, permits, taxes... it brings so much dough and people get plenty of jobs out of it. Outlawing cigarettes for an example would have a major impact on people, as with alcohol. It'll not only be bad for the economy, but the people also. It's just so integrated into our culture and society, in a much larger scale than weed.

I'm not saying outlaw cigarettes, but legalize weed. It'd bring the exact same benefits that cigarettes do, even if it's on a lower scale, it's still more jobs, and more income for everyone.

And I agree with that to an extent. While I personally don't condone the use of weed, I'm up for legalizing it for the pros.

Haha, probably the first debate on LCPDFR.com where anyone has come to an agreement.

Thing is, I already thought that way though. Oh well, still! Success.

And those who drink alcohol have the risk of developing liver disease, heart problems and pancreatitis. Cigarettes carry the risk of lung cancer, emphysema and bronchitis. As people who take part in such activities get older, the risks of these are increased greatly.

In saying "turning dependant", I'm assuming that you mean "turning addicted" which carries the same or a smaller probability as becoming addicted to alcohol, which is legal, remember.

Alcohol was illegal at one point, problem was there were too many people drinking it illegally. If it wasn't as wide spread drinking would probably still illegal but the problem was too big to contain so they let it go and now look at the problems drinking causes now and it's too big to fix. We are at that point where we so called, 'make it or break it' stage with marijuana, yes, at parties fine whatever, own use, regular use, no. If we just let it go problems will very quickly arise and worsen over time.

The longer we say no some say the more in trouble we get however, to me, it's the other way around. Once marijuana uses realise they're not getting it legalized, through the generations there will become less users, hopefully.

And nothing personal, but 16 is a little young to be, what I gather, a rather regular user. I'm more then sure you know the consequences but the same thing happened to my uncle, top of his class, best at everything blah-blah but by the time he was finished with uni (being a regular user) he has slipped up, he didn't care about his exams and slowly but steadily he moved on to new things and now he's well... fucked. Which sort of backs up my point. We thinks it's fine so we keep using then suddenly we have a problems, and often not just one be can brush under the rug.

Alright since this is a debate, I would like to post my opinion as I think this is a very interesting topic.

My opinion on the legalization of marihuana is this: I think that marihuana should stay illegal, reason being is because if marijuana is legalized, it's going to fix one issue then create another, just like when cigarettes and achool were legal, it fixed one issue then created another. While it does have a few health benefits, in about five to ten years form now all those little health benefits will be obsolete, because scientists will have found cures for diseases such epilepsy and tumors. Also I do not condone nor do I condemn the act of smoking weed, it you're a person who does that, do it far away from me and on your own time.

To clarify some misrepresentations:

1. Weed is a drug, it's been already classified as one by several organizations and health corporations.

2. Weed is bad, it has been proven by peer reviewed journals and research and data that weed affects the body negatively and when something damages or creates negative effects, then it is bad, point blank.

My point is, marihuana should stay illegal for the reasons I have stated above.

Honestly, i think they should legalize it. BUT they should enforce laws that are similar to cigarettes and alcohol. why? because the effects of marijuana is quite similar to that of tobacco and alcohol.

The laws should be if you're smoking marijuana, you have to be 18+ (or 21+ depending on your state law), if you're over a certain limit/if there is too much cannabis in your system then you can't drive (exact same laws regarding alcohol/drink driving) AND if you're caught selling or giving anyone under the age of 18 or 21 you get a citation.. or jail time.

Seriously, there is no difference between marijuana and alcohol.. they essentially give you the same affect. marijuana is pretty much non-lethal.. all it does is make you feel good, lets you sleep and gives your the 'munchies' i have NEVER seen someone get violent over smoking marijuana. Look at Amsterdam.. they have it legalized, and i never hear anything going wrong with people over there.. actually, i have never seen a new report or video about people smoking marijuana in Amsterdam, they're just living life like normal. it'll give the government some money, it'll save the police a whole lot of paperwork from petty marijuana possession charges and people don't have to be paranoid/looking over their shoulders every 5 minutes waiting for a drug bust to happen because they have a few plants.

Of course it should be legal. The idea of criminalizing the use or possession of a plant that is safer to use than alcohol or tobacco is insane. The stress on our prison system from nonviolent drug offenders is immense. Lives are ruined by bullshit drug charges. Not to mention that legalizing weed hurts the gangs and cartels, as more people will turn to legal sources which decreases their drug business. The sales tax benefits are also a good incentive, even just a standard sales tax and not some bullshit sin tax.
