Do You Still Want To Be A Cop?

Featured Replies

Here are some interesting stats that I have been told and seen.

First off did you know 85% of police officers end up getting a divorce because of the stress they bring home from the job?

Did you know cops have one of the highest suicide rate in the country from job related incidents?

Did you know the average police officer only lives to be about 52 years old? This is because the average person (not a 1st responder) gets about 2-5 adrenaline rushes a year mean while a police officer gets about 2-15 a day. Over time your body adapts to it and needs to live off it (not much different then hardcore drugs like cocaine or crack) this takes a big toll on your heart and your death after 20 years of policing. So when the cop retires at around 50 years old they only live for about two more years before they die for what ever reason. My teacher knows about 6 different officers that have died from heart attacks with in 4 years of retiring from the PD after serving 20+ years. He also knows 1 officer who died at 32 from a heart attack when the officer was responding to a robbery in progress.

Did you know a lot of officers drop out between 5-10 years of policing and fine a different career field because of the stress?

Just some interesting stats that we learned in class, that I thought I might share.

I would post the sites for these but they are in my notes I took from class sooo... But these are national average stats that they have concluded...

Do you have what it takes to overcome all these challenges?

what do you guys think about these? Did this get you thinking maybe I shouldn't be a cop or it didn't effect you?

For me these don't make me even think twice about being a cop, yeah there scary stats but there are ways to avoid these things from happening, like leaving your badge at work when you leave.

  • I supose you're not part of the LCPD, because I'm a hero, and I know it!

  • May I remind you who was at 9/11? Who caught the Boston bombers? Also we haven't had a defense war since WW2.   Who protects your community from murders, rapist, mugger? Not the Military...    Who

  • That probably says just as much about the job market.

darkangel, with those stats how many were overweight.... fitness is key in police work. Workout, eat healthy, and take vacations.... do that and you will have no problem dealing with police work and the job let alone retirement. Fitness is key.

Good sign.

I'm still planning to. Policing in Finland could be slightly different from the States too, perhaps not as stressful.

But like OP said, leaving your badge at work is an excellent solution. You see enough bad stuff on the job, you don't want to take it home with you.

Well im happy hearing that a lot of you guys want to become active in law enforcement. I did when i was younger but passed it up for one reason or another....have a good friend with the Modesto Police Dept now retired he must have did it right cause hes past 60 now and enjoying his retirement lol. Anyway for me with this game is having fun with going back " In a sence " to at least join a good group like LCPDFR maybe if i'm accepted..... and have fun being police officer in a game. You guys have done a good job in designing a dream to come or dreams that have since passed....one thing ive learned over the years you never get to old to dream....but don't let your dreams pass you by and never let anyone stop you from what you want in life.....your dreams your goals. we only live once....live it to the fullest!!!

I personally think it takes a special kind of person to do that kind of job, a special kind of person to not get affected by the things they see on the daily, body parts from car accidents.. someones face, gone from the impact after they hit a pole, I personally think cops go crooked and do some of the horrible things they have done to people because they can't handle the job stress thus taking it out on whomever they can..

Being a cop, you see people at their worst..

@NYPDDetectiveOdonnel- quite a disrespectful post... ANYONE who serves or has served, cop or soldier alike, are heroes.

I still want to be a police officer. My grandfather has been retired almost 17 years, was in the Air Force during Vietnam from '60-'68, then a police officer in my local department for 30 odd years, retired in 1996, around the time I was born. He had a heart attack while on the job, recovered and went back to work. lol. Needless to say, he is 68 years old and still as well as can be! lol. He is my reason for wanting to be a cop.

Those Fuuls Protect the Outside of this Country.

But Law Enforcement Protect the inside of this Country.

If you Desire to be Law Enforcement it would be a good

idea to Protect the Outside for a Amount of time then

go into Law Enforcement.

Sergeanto!

Sounds about right or possible. I guess it is vital for police officers (in the field) to plan ahead to ease the psychological (and also physical) burdens one could encounter over time. Same for applicants.

It must be nasty depending on country area and position, I guess. That is why I, in general, respect police officers but also other similar jobs.

If they are fools then why dont you go out and take their place...?

I am, Going in to do Round 5 Years of Service. Jus Five cause I am

Law Enforcement. Not Army etc.. Also I Said Fuuls cause alot of them

that are still Young like jus Went in and are out for a Break of Whatever.

They are a little Coky. One thing for sure if I go and do Service, I am

not going to Let it go to my Head.

Some of those 'fuuls' might take more personal offense to that comment than others. After five years in the military so far as a Commissioned Officer, I love it. But, I won't derail this conversation.

I've considered entering federal service after my tenure with the military is over. But, as many has stated, it's a consistent amount of stress that one endures on a daily basis. Stress does follow you no matter the amount of energy you dedicate to working out, hobbies, etc. It's just the matter of how you cope and deal with any pressure in and out of the job. The biggest issue, is that police officers are held to a highers standard than most; having to consistently remain spotless in their personal life as not to appear corrupt or immoral. So, it does follow you home in some manner or another.

Edit: Military Veterans, sadly, take the top spot in suicide by profession. Source: http://www.cnn.com/2013/09/21/us/22-veteran-suicides-a-day/index.html?hpt=hp_c2
