Education: Earned or Unearned Privilege?

Featured Replies

Hey LCPDFR community,

I am doing a bit of research on a project for my English 101 class. It is about privilege; specifically, educational privilege.
Now... I feel ok posting this here and asking the community about their own opinions. (Please answer maturely, as this topic could get a little bit out of hand).

So, what are your opinions? Is education in the US a earned or unearned privilege? Why?
OR, if you live in another country, is it as well over there or different?

Personally, I believe here in the US, education is an unearned privilege. You can get free public education. We don't do anything to get an education here.

Thanks :)

Education is an earned priviledge. We have soldiers who make sure of that. Sure, it's free but... in all reality nothing is free. Many have paid the price making sure we all have an opportunity to education. Some of which maybe shouldn't get a chance at it. Anyways, I think its a priviledge thats earned, not necessarily by individual people, but ultimately the men and women serving our country, today, and in the past have paid a price.

Education, in my opinion, is an earned privilege. I feel like most students in the US, today, abuse this privilege and use it as a "social hangout." I, go to an Early College High School where you have to apply and get accepted. This is obviously an earned privilege to attend this school based on your previous education experiences. I agree with Dayton above in that, some people, do not deserve a chance at education if all they do at school is cause trouble and waste valuable taxpayer money.

There's no such thing as free. Someone, somewhere, is paying for it. States and towns have to raise peoples taxes to build schools, buy new books and materials, parents need to keep their kids supplied and dressed every year, kids need to use various resources to do their homework, etc. As far as "earned" is concerned, I'd say our soldiers have had to pay the most "up front" cost, if you will. But our standards aren't high enough in the U.S. Plenty of countries are surpassing us in quality of education.

Thank you guys!

I have actually started changing a bit my own opinion. If people still have more opinions please continue giving it!

Education is an earned privilege. You [should] go to further and higher education with the intent to positively contribute to society's economy with the skills and knowledge you gain from the place that gives you them. Full stop, or "period" as Americans might say.

everyone deserves a chance at education, if they don't use it wisely that's their loss they will regret their actions once they understand what is needed to get a job that doesn't include flipping burgers and filling soda cups.. not to start a debate or anything but I just straight up don't like how you said people don't deserve to learn who are you to be saying that, that's all im saying.. and also we spend our taxpayer money on a lot of things.. a ton of them stupid did you know that in Maryland (and some other states I have heard) we have new taxes that pay for illegal immigrants to get in state tuition for any college here. (the people getting these tuitions don't even need a green card or even citizenship) meanwhile people who have lived in the area all their life cant even get accepted without paying an arm and a leg (and then some)

and this whole topic is a slippery slope, I want to say that education should be unearned privilege for the fact that I don't want a bunch of brain dead monkey's walking around trying to fix things and only end up breaking it even more.. and also the fact that the more educated a person is, the less likely that person is to commit crimes, so in turn if education was to be an earned thing (which I assume would make basic education something that would be needed to be paid for by the child's parents ((which by the way would be terrible for the economy since people cant even pay for food right now))) it would raise the country's crime rate, might even double the rate, so then you would have a bunch of stupid ass people that wont fix anything, angry about everything, with a government that doesn't care about the people just themselves, and a high crime rate.. and if that happens how are we any better than the countries we go to war for to "try to save"

then obviously there's the argument that kids would rather talk and screw around than learn.. from my school experience which had its fair share of kids screwing around (including myself as well) the kids who actually want to learn far out number the kids who just simply don't care, and those who don't care usually just drop out once their 16 anyway.. I've also noticed that most of the people who don't care about school have gotten that mindset from what they see on TV and what the overall culture of America is now (the f**k school get b****es get money mindset) which is really retarded, since the saying negates itself.. then again I don't know if its as stupid as making excuses for dumb ass decisions by simply saying YOLO...

In Sweden, education is "free" (tax-based, like everything else here....). I think it's great everyone get a chance a education, but of course some who are undeservant of it also get a share of it. I begin to appreciate the american idea more and more each day, in some aspects.

Invenio, Investigatio, Imperium

Absolutely love this topic.

It's not earned and it's not privileged. There's students at my school who were expelled from school grounds because of bringing drugs in, causing trouble, etc.Well, I go to another facility for half of the day for criminal justice. At this other facility, is combined with another area high school and an educational / career building(where I take Criminal Justice). This area high school is a secondary school for troubled kids. There's no homework, nearly no participation grade. It's a joke. Anyways, they ride the same bus I do back to my home school to get transportation. Once they arrive at my school, they get on their bus and go home. It's hard to explain, but they only come to my school to get on their bus home, because the secondary school they attend is for all districts around the area. ANYWAYS, to the story; they were picking on a special needs girl. Throwing stuff at her, calling her names, taking her stuff. For the record, I did report that. They bring drugs to school, they bully people, and they make jokes out of mass killings and have no respect for themselves or anyone in their way.

My point is, I don't understand how you can be kicked out of one school, then sent to another, then another and another. They keep these dirtbags in the system. The only reason they go to school is so they can talk to their dealers or pick on people.

Everything needs more lights.

No I agree that everyone deserves an education, but like I said before if they abuse that privilege by not paying attention or always causing trouble, then they shouldn't get a chance because there are plenty of others who would want to be in their spot at that school.

I would like to say, Thank you all!

I will be getting arranging these and get a good organized answer with all of yours. I personally have changed my opinion. If you still have your own opinion please leave it here. Thank you all very much!! Greatly appreciate it!

I guess I would say it's unearned. Because yeah, it's not free, but it's quite close to free. I remember having to live in England for a bit, and my parents would pay tax + school fees. Here in the US, it's just tax and no school fees. It's also against the law not to go to school here, so technically you aren't earning something you have to do. It's not a privilege, it's a necessity.

As dayton17 mentioned, even if you personally did absolutely nothing to earn your education, someone else did. Whether it be soldiers paying with their lives for the privilege of going to school or parents paying their hard-earned money out of pocket for you to go to private school, somebody has paid.

First off I wanna say this America has been false advertising free since she gained her independence. That's one lie it told. Also as far as Education is concerned I believe that white people shouldn't earn their own information about there so called country it should be a given. Now as far as My people go(Africans) We should never let our enemy(Whites) teach us.

We should teach our own people and about the knowledge of ourselves not what was spoon feed to us by White America. I am not racist its just my opinion.
