How much can I overclock?

Featured Replies

Hello,

I just built a computer and I want to know how much I can overclock the CPU before I need to get fancy with more fans/liquid cooling. How much so could I overclock, and how much of a difference in FPS would it have in GTA IV for instance. I get about 30-70 FPS on Max Settings. The 30 is a little too low for my liking. It only gets that low at night or something or when there are a lot of lights flashing. Also, even after a heated round of GTA IV or Battlefield 3, the case isn't even warm to the touch.

Thanks

Intel i7 4770k Haswell @ 3.5 GHz

EVGA GTX 770 Superclocked

8GB RAM 1600 MHz

4 Case fans, 3 pushing air out, 1 pushing air in

Damn! a 770 Graphics Card?!?! You are really lucky!

Seems you have a pretty damn fine mochine, not sure why you want to OC it.  Far as I have heard and noticed, that 30FPS drop will happen regardless during certain time cycle/weather cycle changes.

Oh. Classic GTA IV problems I guess.

By the way, does anyone know of a good recording program besides FRAPS that does not make huge files but still has good quality?

Thanks!

Well, I have an i5 2500k, and its stock speed is 3.3GHz and turbo 3.7GHz. I was able to overclock to 3.8GHz on the stock cooler, but it was running really hot (idle low 60s, load anywhere from 70s to high 80s). The intel stock heatsinks are junk compared to most aftermarket models. For example, I got a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo for about $30 on amazon, and I was able to overclock to 4.3GHz with temperatures still well below those of the stock cooler (idle in high 30s and low 40s, with a load it reads at low to high 60s). Also, I had never replaced a heatsink previously, so my thermal paste application probably wasn't the greatest, but I'm still happy with the temperatures.

You should probably use something like HWmonitor to read your cpu temps, because feeling if the case is hot is not really an accurate judge.

Do you have the stock cooler or an aftermarket one? Each unlocked CPU from Intel is slightly different when it comes to voltage and heat tolerance, and they won't warranty them if you tamper with them. I'd say around 4.0 is safe. It's possible to go higher (maybe around 4.5 or 4.6) but you're risking over-volting it at that point, or overheating it with a stock cooler.

I have a 3770K with an aftermarket cooler running it at stock clocks. There isn't a shooter game I can't max out with it couple with my GTX 670. I might push it to 4.0 if I feel like experimenting, but I'm fine with how it performs now.

My BIOS supports overclocking. So I have set it to 9% overclock. If I go higher Windows won't start. That's maybe a protection. Don't overclock too much. The lifetime of your pc components drops dramatically. I wouldn't go higher than 9%.

I'm using the stock cooler. I get about 30-60 FPS (Usually in the 40's) in GTA IV on Med-High settings, but for some reason in ARMA 2, my system bottoms out at around 30-40 FPS on Low-Med settings and I can't figure out why. A guy on YouTube has a regular 770 and 3rd gen i5 and he can max it out, I don't know why I can't with a 4770k and a SC'd 770. I thought Overclocking might give me an edge, but I am starting to think it there is a problem giving me low performance.

By the way, unr3al, you have a 3770k and 670, on GTA IV on Max Settings what FPS do you get? I seem to get 30-40 no matter what setting it's on.

Hmmmmmm...

Somewhere around 90fps on the original game, without mods of any kind. ARMA's engine sucks. Always has, probably always will. Most people don't know/remember that the "game" is built off of an actual U.S. Army training simulator and has terrible coding. The games details are bland and even high end systems can have a hard time with it. GTA IV is really screwy with its performance too. In a couple of other topics, one of which I started myself, I reported that I have HUGE texture loss problems that leads to crashing very quickly on my new system when I use car mods, with or without ENB. My new PC is faster, can crunch more data at once, runs a leaner OS and even has more texture memory. Nobody can seem to explain to my why my 4 year old computer could play GTA IV with mods better than my new one. I can't explain it either, and although I'm no computer genius, I think highly enough of my technical abilities that I'm disappointed in myself not knowing exactly why.

Anyway, you can't expect your results to be 100% like a benchmark on a site like HardOCP.com says it will be. But you should be it the ballpark. I'll agree that your performance at those settings is a little odd. There's probably more than meets the eye to your performance issues.

I'm in the same boat as you, my other computer (A Mac) runs GTA IV at about the same level of performance as the new one, albeit my new one can do it on slightly higher settings. Someone suggested using patch 1.0.4.0 instead of 1.0.7.0. I might try that, but I don't want to reinstall the game to do it. I've already had to do that about 7 times because I tried to install an ENB. ENBs never work for me. I tried lowering the settings and now I get about 50-75 FPS, usually in the 60s. When I start to record with FRAPS it locks at 30.

I tried car mods the other night in EFLC. It gave texture/complete ground loss and then crashed almost immediately. I think the new CPU & GPU combo is going to force me to retire any car mods, which is a real shame. That was half of the gameplay for me right there.

Same here. On a side note, how are you getting 90 FPS? I can barely escape the 40s on Med-High Settings. I just built the PC, installed Windows, installed the Motherboard drivers (From the disc that came with it) Installed my Video Card and WiFi antenna driver, then started installing games and stuff. Is there something more I need to install or tweak that I forgot to do? I have tried reinstalling the game many times. GTA IV is a riddle wrapped inside of an enigma.

I didn't really do anything strange, no. GTA IV = crappy PC port. That's all I know. lol

I uninstalled my ENB and some of my mods and I'm still getting piss poor performance. The highest FPS I can get is 39. How can I fix this?

Not sure what to say, man. Did you turn off VSync? Do you have forced AA on or anything like that?

VSync is off, no AA. I'm going to reinstall the game and see what happens.
