06/06/1944? I want to know just how many of the young-ins on here can understand what is so important about this date in history and why we should take some time out of our days tomorrow and pause for remembrance. Even a few seconds is all it should take.

Learned about it last year, June 6, 1944, 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. General Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end on June 6, the Allies gained a foot- hold in Normandy. The D-Day cost was high -more than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded -- but more than 100,000 Soldiers began the march across Europe to defeat Hitler.

 

I thank those who served our country. They really are great people, risking there lives to protect people. Theres only a percentage that can say that.

I always like to pause and have a nice Cigar Smoke to reflect and remember those who have died for my country on days such as this. It would be nice if everyone did so, even if for a little bit (Minus the Cigar, that's personal choice ).

I don't recognize it as 6/6, but I do recognize it as June 6. I blame audiobooks.

Of course I do, being French, and my grand-parents (mom side) were living under nazis' threat everyday until this date.

I do, I am 14, my grandma lived in Austria during this time.

Sure. The 06/06/1944 a chinese guy slipped off and crashed his rickshaw against a fruit selling stand, somewhere in the China occupied by the Japaneses. The Rickshaw driver, a guy called Huan, suffered minor injuries while two civilians were sent to the hospital.

 

Now, regarding what the OP means. Despite the fact that allies won, it was a complete failure of operation. The land troops disembarked at the wrong time when the tide was low. And the airborne troops jumped far from their actual objectives. RIP to those all heroes who died in order to end with the Nazi and fascist tyranny. People should remember it to avoid it to happen again.

 

To the post above me, not just for America, but for the entire world. And don't forget that not just the Americans fought.

As Belgium is a neighbouring country, I've already been in Normandy and going there again  in a few weeks. It's very touching and gut-wrenching when you walk on the American Cemetery and Memorial and thousands of graves of young American soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. The United States has indeed got its problems nowadays and like Strike stated, the operation was indeed far from perfect. Nonetheless, as a Belgian, I say thank you to all the Americans out there for having fought so fiercely for the liberty we enjoy today. I'll certainly never forget.

A lot of people know this date, probably not by heart but by googleing today in history. Would of been easier that happened 74 years ago today or something like that...

I wouldn't say "complete failure", seeing as the primary objective for the first day (establish solid beachheads in order to land further troops and mount an assault inland) was achieved. Complete failure would be if the assault was repelled from all 5 beaches by the end of the day; it was not, and after the first day, was pretty well established.

I can defo vouch for the two series. They are really great to watch, and you do learn a lot through them. It also helps to put in perspective just how scary this was really was.

I guess I chose the wrong words, I'd call it an execution failure. They took the beaches, yeah, but they could have saved a lot of lives if they landed in the right hour and airborne had fallen in the right place. I heard that the bombers also failed too many of their targets. The operation could have easily gone wrong.

That's indeed one of the most awesome pictures ever. I personally love the one of the Soviets in the Reichstag, so impressive picture.
