Should I bake a cake inside my PC?

Featured Replies

Hey guys! Kinda worried!

Here my problem: Got this weird graphical glitches today - Seems like the graphics card is getting hot (I hope it's not) - Check it out for yourself and tell me if you KNOW what it is, no assumptions like "Maybe it's your graphics card).

gtaiv2011-07-1718-26-3on86.jpg gtaiv2011-07-1718-26-34ubg.jpg gtaiv2011-07-1718-26-31nw9.jpg gtaiv2011-07-1718-26-3qncr.jpg gtaiv2011-07-1718-26-3knkp.jpg gtaiv2011-07-1718-26-49uqw.jpg gtaiv2011-07-1720-04-21uzi.jpg gtaiv2011-07-1720-04-22uhg.jpg gtaiv2011-07-1720-04-4hn5y.jpg gtaiv2011-07-1720-04-42ngu.jpg

It's 30°C in my room atm, which is due to the climate where I live and the PC doesn't seem to like that, seing that the System Idles at 38°C and the Processor at 45° (which is freaking hot). So when I played GTA IV today, about 5 Minutes in I get the graphics glitch above, now my first thought: "Holy shit the graphics card" so I immediately terminated the game, all the applications, opened the side of the PC to see if it was okay, now the gfxcard seems fine, but when I terminated GTA IV, the processor temperature was at 57°C (max Temp is about 65°C) - which worries me, System Temp was at 49°C.

So I turned off the pc, let it cool down for a few minutes, then I got a fan and the hairdryer (with heat turned off) and cooled the pc a bit. Booting up it started with about 32°C and slowly worked itself up to 38°C where it was idling a bit ago (system temp that is) - Now running GTA IV again gives the same problem :/

So now my PC has a bag full of Ice hanging in front of the fan and I wonder if I should be worried about my graphics card.

Idle temperature now is 38°C (Sys) and 47°C (CPU).

Thanks for reading guys and please tell me what it could be if you know. Thank you!

Download GPUZ (link: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2018/TechPowerUp_GPU-Z_v0.5.4.html)

It's a handy information tool that displays lots of information about your grpahics card including temperature, clock monitoring, number of shader cores, production code name and number, etc. There is also CPUZ which you can use for your processor.

Click the tab that says 'Sensors' and look at 'Core Temperature'. GPU's have a much higher tolerance for heat than CPU's. Modern nVidia GeForce cards can hit as high as 100C. According to PNY, I expressed concerns about my 8800GTX and they claimed they test their cards up to 124C, and it will auto-shutdown around 114C. Today's GeForce cars are a bit more stable. lol

My GTX570 is idling around 50C with my fan speed at only 43%. With my old 8800GTX, I used RivaTuner (link: http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=rivatuner) to put my fan speed at 100% at all times. It's a bit louder but worth it to prevent overheating. You should also make sure your cable management inside your PC is good, and clear it of any dust using compressed air every now and then.

My CPU is around 42C on idle right now. I'd say a safe temp is around 60-65 under load. You may use SpeedFan (link: http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php) to check the temperature of each individual core. But bottom line: I'm willing to bet it's your graphics card based upon the artifacts in your screenshots. I had similar issues with my old 8800GTX.

Thans unr3al, I was actually hoping that you would answer.

This is what GPU-Z says:

So you had similar issues, how did you resolve them?

Is 65C idle temperature or under load? Under load of course meaning in-game. If that screenshot is your idle temp, boot up GTAIV and play it for a little while, then hit ALT & TAB and look at your temps then.

I didn't really resolve them per se. I used Riva Tuner to crank the fan speed to 100% at all times. The graphics card fan is supposed to be intelligent enough to keep the card cool, but I found that being in control made a difference. It still ran hot though. About 80C on idle back then, but I was told (and other owners confirmed) I did not have a defective card. Thats how the 8800's performed. The things nVidia do to make sure they beat AMD cards by 2%...

Check this article out for a laugh, too: http://theory.isthereason.com/?p=534

This guy fries an egg using his CPU, literally.

that screenshot is idling. I'll but up GTA IV and tell you in a second when the graphic bug comes, if it comes.

Those pictures... It can't be your g-card (graphics card)

Maybe IV glitched? On mine, the highway turn at the toll (Between Bohan and Firefly Island) It looks like a ocean of sand is attacking the road, it happens sometimes, it's a easy bug.

Play it for a little bit. I want to see the card get stressed and give it a chance to heat up before you take a screenshot.

*EDIT* Sorry for the double post.

Those random brown streaks are called artifacts. They happen frequently with overheating GPUs

My card aint overheated (at least not yet...).

The bug is ALWAYS happening when I'm on IV.

Seems like indeed it has something to do with a car. Driving around I didn't notice the bug at all, except for when I came near a dodge charger which a friend put a rambar on for me about a day ago. The doors of it seem glitched and whenever there is one near the graphics bug comes. Also, the card does 85°C under full load as I saw when playing GTA IV.

So it's probably that car isn't it?

It very well may be the car. 85C isn't great, but it isn't bad. My GTX570 ran 79C. And Jay I'm surprised you spit at PNY but not at the fact that his card is a 250 GTX. My card has worked great and is built better than the "nVidia built" reference board (actually made by Foxconn). I've never seen that glitch with a car mod, but if you are both confirming it, that sounds probable. Could be that the model wasn't finished correctly.

When I bought the PC the 250GTS was hightech xD And it's not by PNY it's by Zotac.

Anyways, contacted the dude who made the rambar for me and he is reexporting it now.

Turns out it was the car, I'll post here again though if the glitch returns!

The guy who did the rambar for me re-made the model quickly and re-exported it and now it seems to be working. Thanks for your help unr3al!

EDIT: @Foundstory: I'm already running the latest drivers, updated them 2 weeks ago.

I was right :) I had this problem often now and everybody who had the first version of my unmarked Charger also had this.

Sometimes renaming the car is fixing this, too.
