how old do you have to be to work at a car dealership

Featured Replies

hey,

so im thinking about getting a job at a local car dealership as a lot attendant and just washing cars and what not and was wondering how old would you have to be to be able to attain such a job at a car dealership.

Prob 16 and older or 18 and older. The best way to find out is actually go there and ask:)

If you want to me reply as soon as possible, then either quote or @CouthInk4  me as i'll be notified, a general reply will not notify me

Here in Canada if you can hold a valid drivers license and drive standard you're golden, but it's to actually get you're foot in the door with little or no experience, pardon my french but salesman are arrogant as fuck, why would you want to work with them? lol i have to deal with them everyday when i tow cars to dealerships.

well reason being is that its a pretty easy job and really no body is hiring really so a car dealership isnt a place most teens would think about so i would have better luck grabbing a job there then at mc donalds or an amusement park. also im around cars all day, that in itself is really nice

Based on the job I have (gun store), as long as you meet the minimum age laws, you can work anywhere, you just may not be able to do certain things. I can do anything at my job besides sign off on sales, which I can't do until I'm 21. If you are going to do something maintenance wise, you stand a lot better chance of getting the job because it saves the more knowledgeable and better selling workers time.

Pretty much this^.

If you're hoping to just do some regular work around the place and possibly some maintenance (Such as washing cars like you stated, cleaning the place up, serving the coffee etc.) it'll probably be just the state minimum of age: 16. I don't quite understand what you mean by lot attendant but if you mean being in car sales I'm going to safely assume that you'll have to be at 18 or over since you're taking people out for test drives, handling paperwork, and their property (Cars). So due to liability reasons they will probably want you to be at 18.  That's what I would assume (You never see 16 year olds on the lot).

Here is the Maryland youth labor laws site. It seems like the answer is 16, but there are restrictions on working hours until you reach 18. I can't imagine it'd be 21, and I REALLY can't imagine it'd be anything BUT 16, 18, or 21.

However, you pretty much can't drive a car as part of your job unless you're 18. 17-year-olds can drive under certain circumstances, but it has to be just incidental to the job.

Fun fact: The Labor Department declares some jobs as hazardous, and Maryland doesn't let minors work those jobs. Two such fields are:

1. Coal-Mining occupations

2. Occupations in connection with mining, other than coal.

Does that seem odd to anyone else?
