Starting the Police Academy

Featured Replies

Well the one good thing that I keep hearing is that the PT will be slightly less strenuous starting with this class. Apparently our County had such a huge dropout rate compared to surrounding jurisdictions and we just recently got a new Chief because the old one resigned (some bad stuff with the County Executive and criminal charges, don't ask)....anyways, apparently the new Chief wants the Academy to be more collegiate like and focus on academics rather than having a DI in your face 5 days a week making you do pushups for having a dog hair on your uniform. I mean, the DI's will still be there a few days a week, but nothing like before apparently. SO, it'll be interesting to see how it will all play out, the anticipation is killing me.

Even so, PT is a necessity in my book and should be yours. Physical training should be a lifestyle for all law enforcement officers... not a temporary requirement on passing the Academy. Not saying you wouldn't - just some friendly advice.

Me personally, I PT 4 times a week, twice a day (upper body in the morning, lower body at night), 2hrs per session. I eat properly (98% of the time), and avoid fried foods with a passion.

These are some of my workout products... not saying you should take them all, if any, just a example of me pushing myself. Just remember too eat lots of grilled vegetables, grilled chicken, lots of rice, fruits, and have 3 decent protein shakes a day, between meals. You don't have to cut out all the sugar based products (somewhat unavoidable)- just try to consume more complex ones.

Congratulations once again!

  • Congratulations!   Ten Academy Rules. 1. Always address your ATO's properly and with respect. Sir / Ma'am... 2. PT (Physical Training) is crucial... during and after the Academy. Always strive to

  • Also adding on to that...   1.) Never say I know or I already know how to do that. When they call on you to do something just say yes sir/mam and do it and show them your good at it. Never give them

  • Congrats dude, I am still in the academy for my agency but I will hit the streets in the FTO program at the end of March. It's a heck of a journey but will be well worth it.

Congratulations!

I have a about five years left before applying myself.

HOLY Crap Nutt, that's insane!  I don't even think my schedule would permit me to work out 2hrs in the morning and 2hrs in the evening. I absolutely abhor running, but I've always done whatever needs to be done to get what I want, so I've been running like crazy as much as I hate it. Mind over body (if I dont drive myself insane first LOL). The last few weeks I've been doing simple workouts to get prepared, stuff like pushups, pullups, situps, suicide sprints and running laps around my neighborhood, but nothing serious enough to warrant all those protein shakes LOL I'm poor enough as is, and that stuff ain't cheap!

As long as your doing something bud, remember "stamina/endurance" should be the focus of what exercises you should do. Running is definitely a good starting point, also add hills or steep inclines into the mix. I thank SGT. Rosser of ATL PD Academy for instilling this into me... anyhow, eat healthy with regular exercise, you should be fine.

@ninkanji - sure. Lol

Congrats man!

One of the moments that has effected me the most was when working an event for the families of fallen officers here in Missouri an elderly gentleman approached me, (I was in uniform) and he said to me," Son when you're on the street don't just worry about the people behind you because the guys in the front will screw you over just as much."

The man then showed me a badge from another agency and I asked, "Is that yours sir?"

And with his heart felt reply he answered, "No sir, it's my son's.  That was always what he told the new guys.  But sometimes we just let it slip away from us."

Stay safe out there man.

Just checkin in here guys with a quick update. I'm 6 weeks in and finally starting to love it. The first 2 weeks were full of DI's in your face giving out some good stress inoculation, lol. It was also filled with a lot of group punishment even if just 1 guy screwed up which really had me wishing that those people would just quit but I'm finally starting to see it working, my whole attitude has change and I'd rather see those people succeed and help them through it than to see them give up.

We just got through one of the more difficult courses (Constitutional Law), already got OC'd (my second time, still sucked as much as the first), and we've been starting our weekly defensive tactics sessions which are proving quite challenging physically (and mentally). All kidding aside, its definitely the most challenging and rewarding decision I've made in my life, and the last 2 weeks have literally flown by so I hope the next 4 months go by just as fast.

While I'm not LE, I know multiple former and current LE. This may not be as relevant now, but it is great for the future. From the LE I know, their biggest pet peeve is that most of their force only trains with their weapons at qualification, which with most departments, especially with budget cuts, isn't much.

The best case scenario would be constant practice, even seeking out additional training (which I highly recommend), despite never needing to use that skill. However, if the time arises where you need to, I don't think you want to be one of the many cops I point out as prime examples that LE aren't highly trained with weapons (LAPD firing 114 shots at the wrong vehicle during Chris Dorner manhunt, only hitting it 42 times and one person inside once for example). Do this not only to keep your department from a PR nightmare by shooting civilians, but also to ensure as much as possible that you can return home at night.

Sticks and stones may break bones, but 5.56 fragments on impact.

Glad to hear you're pushing through SteelReign. Keep at it bro...

Guys, my lifelong dream has finally come true. Eight years ago, I started working for County Corrections thinking it would be a great experience and maybe a foot in the door to the police. My first two attempts into the police were in 2007 and 2010. Both ended in disappointment. I sure as hell didn't let that stop me though. I started my third attempt LAST August, and just received my final offer of employment three days ago. I start on February 28th and I can already feel that this is going to be the longest two weeks EVER waiting for it. The best thing is, I got in with the same County that I already work for, so my 8 years transfers from my pension plan, and all my annual and sick leave transfer over too, the only thing that doesn't come with me is seniority (they used to do it based off how long you've been with the County, but not anymore).  So anyways, I'll try to stop by and check in with you guys periodically. Until then, carry on!

Just another quick check in. We're a mere 48 calender days away from graduation  :woot: Just finished 2 weeks of firearms and 1 week of EVOC. I found out Monday that I'll be receiving the EVOC Award at graduation for being top in the class. Firearms I was close, but about 3-4 away from the top. The next few weeks will comprise of Field Sobriety Testing, Traffic Stops/Accident Investigation, then ROPE (roleplayers/scenarios/respond to 'calls' and basically where we tie everything we've learned together). Jesus Christ this can't come fast enough!

Congratulations! I'm happy to announce that, after almost a year, I passed the entire (lengthy) selection process and finally get to realise my dream of becoming a police officer as well.  If all goes well, I'll be starting my police academy training on October 1st. I'm ready for an exciting new chapter in my life!
