Starting the Police Academy

Guys, my lifelong dream has finally come true. Eight years ago, I started working for County Corrections thinking it would be a great experience and maybe a foot in the door to the police. My first two attempts into the police were in 2007 and 2010. Both ended in disappointment. I sure as hell didn't let that stop me though. I started my third attempt LAST August, and just received my final offer of employment three days ago. I start on February 28th and I can already feel that this is going to be the longest two weeks EVER waiting for it. The best thing is, I got in with the same County that I already work for, so my 8 years transfers from my pension plan, and all my annual and sick leave transfer over too, the only thing that doesn't come with me is seniority (they used to do it based off how long you've been with the County, but not anymore).  So anyways, I'll try to stop by and check in with you guys periodically. Until then, carry on!

  • Congratulations!   Ten Academy Rules. 1. Always address your ATO's properly and with respect. Sir / Ma'am... 2. PT (Physical Training) is crucial... during and after the Academy. Always strive to

  • Also adding on to that...   1.) Never say I know or I already know how to do that. When they call on you to do something just say yes sir/mam and do it and show them your good at it. Never give them

  • Congrats dude, I am still in the academy for my agency but I will hit the streets in the FTO program at the end of March. It's a heck of a journey but will be well worth it.

what bridge is that,

it kinda looks like the bridge to virgina beach or the bridge to ocean city

or the other side of maryland

either way im terrified by that bridge, its hella long and takes forever to cross

pretty cool to here you got a job out in ann arundel county i usually go out there to go to walmart and ann arundel mall.

that is when i uses to live around in that part of maryland

Ten Academy Rules.

1. Always address your ATO's properly and with respect. Sir / Ma'am...

2. PT (Physical Training) is crucial... during and after the Academy. Always strive to do better every PT session. And don't wait for the Academy PT sessions, do them also during downtime periods.

3. Never be afraid of asking questions... especially ones you don't fully understand.

4. Do not bring your bad habits (behavior too) into the Academy. The first 2-3 months of Academy life is weeding out Cadets with poor habits (attitudes, hygiene issues, poor grooming of facial hair and hairstyles, etc..).

5. "IF" a group captain or leader is assigned, then they are the first point of contact for any problems that may occur and the first step in building/teaching/understanding the CoC (Chain of Command) procedures.

6. DO NOT EVER BREAK THE CHAIN OF COMMAND!!! Especially during Academy life.

7. Your stress levels will be at its highest during academy life. You're going to want to scream, break things, punch some folks (ATO's especially)... but don't, please don't. Take that anger and frustration and turn it into positive energy towards PT or SD/TT.

8. The mind is stronger than your physical being - remember that. It's all a mind game...

9. Start disassociating yourself from people(s) and place(s) that may be deemed as seedy or inappropriate.

10. Always pray if you believe in GOD... if not, meditate and focus on the goal at hand. Being the best person you can be.

I see that you're a Correctional Officer and you probably know these things already... however, it never hurts to be reminded of them. :)

Later Bro...

Also adding on to that...

1.) Never say I know or I already know how to do that. When they call on you to do something just say yes sir/mam and do it and show them your good at it. Never give them oh I know how to do this. That won't get you far

2.) Don't be nervous, well don't show them your nervous. If you make a mistake accepted it and learn from it!!

You've been Rick Rolled[/spoiler]

Now, as for PT..... Stick with it. They are going to do everything they can to get you to drop out. Don't let them into your head and keep telling yourself why you are there in the first place. There is a reason to their madness of the tough workouts and yelling and screaming. If your academy is anything like mine was, You fail one test (below an 80%) and you are out of the program. Keep pushing and you will get through it. Any questions, please don't hesitate to send me a PM and ask. There is no such thing as a stupid question. Good luck!

Heres some things I learned from when I went to the academy, STUDY, EAT RIGHT and SLEEP! After the first month most of us looked like crack heads due to our lack of proper sleep and poor diets, and we weeded out a good amount of people because people couldn't get on the study track fast enough. My director loved push-ups, or rather loved watching us do push ups lol. Its funny, while it sucked at times, I do miss it at times.

This is a signature, not a good one, but one that's needed

Congrats and at least your already somewhat familiar with the academy- physical stuff should be the same (they are in nyc)hopefully you won't have an instructor like mine who was a former Marine Corp. drill instructor who thought he was still there and bragged about his presidential detail and loved to say "eyeballs" and we had to respond "click" or else extra pt time- buut atleast he prepared us for the assholes in the field- lol

Once again Congrats! some exciting shit

Well the one good thing that I keep hearing is that the PT will be slightly less strenuous starting with this class. Apparently our County had such a huge dropout rate compared to surrounding jurisdictions and we just recently got a new Chief because the old one resigned (some bad stuff with the County Executive and criminal charges, don't ask)....anyways, apparently the new Chief wants the Academy to be more collegiate like and focus on academics rather than having a DI in your face 5 days a week making you do pushups for having a dog hair on your uniform. I mean, the DI's will still be there a few days a week, but nothing like before apparently. SO, it'll be interesting to see how it will all play out, the anticipation is killing me.
