Safer Chases (Smarter Driving for Cops) 1.5

(46 reviews)

7 Screenshots

No more derbies between cops while in pursuit.

So, I have grow tired of seeing people being afraid of calling police Backup because the NPC Cops drive too aggresively. This the result of my frustration.

This script attempts to make chases safer, for both you as well as the suspect, by slowing down police vehicles on certain circumstances, like when you're recovering from a crash and another cop car passes by, or you're near the suspect.

RAGEHOOK/LSPDFR VERSION RELEASED.

Special thanks to Guadmaz, who took the time to port the script for me and helped me finetune it.

Delete the original .NET version from your game!

Features

  • NPC Cops won't ram the suspects ever again. Despite that statement, you can disable this behavior this mid-pursuit if you change your mind. If you hit the suspect's vehicle yourself, NPC Cops will take it as a sign that the suspect is to be stopped by all means, and will resume HOT COP ACTION behind the suspect like this script never happened. You will be immersively notified of this change on their behavior.
  • NPC Cops will slow down when passing by you, preventing cop-to-player crashes this way. If they're directly behind you, they will brake harder to make sure they don't rear-end you. They ignore you if your vehicle is stopped, however.
  • NPC Cops will allow the player to be the primary unit when he's close to the suspect, leaving some space between them and the suspect's vehicle. They will take primary position again if the player falls too far behind.
  • NPC Cops can now yield to you. Simply honk and all nearby units will slow down.
  • NPC Cops will now try to manage traffic better. They overtake more carefully and brake to avoid running over running pedestrians or crashing into slow-moving vehicles. They even take into account other police vehicles!

WARNING

I consider this script resource intensive.

If you experience noticeable frame drops, disable some of the features in the .ini file to lighten the load on the CPU.

Settings
You can change multiple settings inside "SaferChases.ini" to tune the script's behavior to your likings.

  • Finetune how fast cops can pass by you [speed in KM/H]
  • Allow Primary Unit support [enable/disable]
  • Prevent the NPC cops from ramming the suspects[enable/disable]
  • Allow the NPC cops to try and manage traffic better [enable/disable]
  • Allow the player to force other units to yield to him [enable/disable]
  • Debug notifications [enable/disable]

Installation
Place "SaferChasesRPH.dll" and "SaferChases.ini" inside the \Grand Theft Auto V\Plugins\LSPDFR\ folder.

How to use

The script should start working automatically. You don't have to do anything.

The script will load its settings from the .ini again for any new pursuits you join, so feel free to tweak it mid-game.

Plans for future updates

  • Experiment on more, better ways to approach the issue this script adresses.
  • Port the script to RageHook if it people like it Done.
  • Let the player toggle the Ram Suspect feature while ingame, mid-pursuit. Done.
  • Let the player make other police vehicles yield, so you don't have to fight for a position in a pursuit. Done.

Troubleshooting
  • If you experience any kind of crash and you think Safer Chases has something to do with it, upload the RagePluginHook.log file you will find inside your main GTAV folder, detailing the situation you and the suspects where when it crashed.

Don't consider this a polished script, but a "cheap" workaround to a frustrating problem until better options are available.

Feedback is what I need to know what to change. Here is the discussion thread, and, if anyone wants the sourceode, you can find it here.

What's New in Version 1.5

Released

Tweaks

  • Updated for LSPD:FR 0.3.1.
  • Improved code optimization, hopefully by a lot.
  • You can now undo PIT authorization by honking near the suspect's vehicle.
  • Removed Primary Unit notifications, as I saw they were confusing people. The cops still allow primary if you're near the suspect.

If you're using secondary callouts mod take it out. That should fix the freezing police cars during pursuits but it won't stop the memory error. I had to take it out because of that. It's a great mod, wish there was a fix to this and I have a high end PC.

Thank you, I will try this.

when on duty as officer my car automatically breaks when chasing target car, when target car starts to slow down my car does to, is there a way to stop it??

Since update 0.3.1 this mod hasn't been working properly for me, I have all the settings on TRUE, but the AI cops still ram me when I'm in primary, they ram the suspect at a million MPH when I haven't hit them myself and they won't yield to me :/ I have it in the LSPDFR folder inside the plugins folder... That's the right location isn't it?

Anyone else having these problems or is it just me?

No, you are not alone. I do have this issue sometimes as well. I don't think the cops will ever stop smashing into everybody. LOL

I believe this mod is causing the pursuit backup bug now. Fiskey spent some time fixing his secondary callout mod to avoid that problem. I found that having his mod installed without this worked fine, but after installing safer chases the problem occurs again.

I think this script is conflicting with the new LSPDFR update (0.3.1). It seems that the Police Vehicles no longer yield to me or stay behind me when I am taking primary.

I've been playing for some time with the new version and now works. Please, try 1.5 and let me know.

Just played the new version and had a couple of great chases. Backup units acted very realistic, I even noticed a decrease in them accelerating then braking hard over and over. Also noticed they didn't ram each other as much. Great job!!

does this mod make the drivers drive any slower, or is that lspdfr?

What does this mod affect exactly? Does it affect the memory of video cards? Or ram? I have 2 gtx 980 sli and 64gb ram, but I get alot of fps drops when in pursuit with this mod.

I wish I knew because I love the way it works, but after a while of using it I get a total game crash that says memory error reboot game. Not really sure how that's happening when I have a GTX 970 4g card and 16gb of ram. I hope it gets figured out soon because this is a much needed mod.

Safer Chases applies backwards force to the appropiate police vehicles each game tick, that's why you get FPS drops. It's a heavy CPU hit, but I doubt it affects VRAM.

I cannot do it any other way without affecting the cop AI, thing I don't want to touch so as not to bug out their behavior.

You can lighten the FPS drop by going to the .ini file and disabling HelpCopsManageTraffic, as its probably what its causing the major FPS drops.

you have it in the wrong place in your game. The files go in the LSPDFR folder INSIDE your plugin folder.

"Place "SaferChasesRPH.dll" and "SaferChases.ini" inside the \Grand Theft Auto V\Plugins\LSPDFR\ folder " <---- directions at the top of the page

When I do that, the plugin doesn't work, the AI are still as crazy as ever..

Is there a way in foot pursuit that the npc cop can pass you while on foot?

This doesn't seem to work for me any more after I updated RPH to 0.38.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it dont. But it never crashes on me to cause it to not work.  (ragehook 0.37)

I cant tell if its working lol, there are still times when the cops drive like maniacs and rear end me to get to the suspect.

Greetings and salutations,

I had a quick question about this mod. I notice when I accept the callout for a stolen police vehicle or emergency vehicle carjacking that they tend to yield to me when I fluctuate my siren. (The Horn button)

I was wondering if there was anyway to bypass this so they aren't yielding to me like other officers are suppose to? :P

Thanks,

- Ron

Might I suggest you package your mod as plugins/LSPDFR/yourfiles. If you're going to use a folder structure might as well have the whole thing.

does this work with the latest ragehook?

I finally managed to get it working so all is now well, Like I said before LSPDFR is not the same without this Mod and it's a must for anyone who doesn't like the fact that the police cars just come charging in smashing anything up in sight. If you want more realistic Chases then this is for you. But I do have one question. Does Safer chases load up when a chase starts and then unload once the chase has been completed? and then load up again once another chase happens? As once I had one chase finish it said that safer chases had unloaded and so I wasn't to sure if that was the norm. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. I am also running everything on there latest updates so if anyone else was wondering if it will work with LSPDFR or the latest rage hook it does. I look forward to any replies and help on this matter. Thanks in advance and Many thanks to Eddlm for this great Mod and a must for LSPDFR!!!!!
